    We use the oven and grill quite a lot... In summer we love the gas BBQ outside, but for winter touring, we often cook a nice meal with a bottle of wine as we may do at home...

      Like yourselves we BBQ almost exclusively in summer outside. We recently discovered how to cook roast chicken and roast beef joint in our £100 air fryer, so the dedicated oven and hob are kinda redundant with an air fryer t and inculcation plate.

    Very well presented, a breath of fresh air.
    My favourite was the Mancelle, really stylish and airy. Totally agree with all that was said about it. Coming from Aus, l don’t understand the Pom’s love of the oven in a van. It adds weight and is rarely used (l know that the traditionalists will get up on their high horse about that comment). All you need is a couple of burners an air fryer (which let’s face it, it’s an oven) and a good bbq.

    • @NotAnotherWhiteBox
      @NotAnotherWhiteBox  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Thank you for the kind words. I didn’t realise that ovens are a big deal in AUS caravans too! I once had a rare 1950s Australian made Country Club caravan that was brought over by a British couple in the 1960s who lived in it in AUS for a while. That was strange to see how similar it was to British caravans of the era, but it also had some unusual refinements such as a shower, fly screens and central heating, which were all virtually unheard of in British caravans at the time. On the flip side, it was horrendously heavy compared to British caravans of the time!

    12 volt compression fridges are replacing every other fridge in all the campers here in America. They sip electricity, yet they provide excellent refrigeration. You set your temperature and they keep within a few degrees, even in the hotest weather. I won't travel with anything less any more.

    • @NotAnotherWhiteBox
      @NotAnotherWhiteBox  Před 6 měsíci

      Yes I’ve seen this to be true in the rest of the world. Yet again, Britain is lagging behind! The irony is, the traditional three-way fridges generally do not have a great reputation here for reliability, despite our calm climate that allows them to function well. I hope compressor fridges break into the mainstream market here soon.

    Not many uk/euro vans have little bed nooks for mobile phones and charging and even CPAP machines that many people have these days;Also recessing the cook top down a few cms so the bench top can continue across flush to give more space and flips up when in use; a multi use oven/ microwave instead of an oven ; remove curtains as they’re fussy and take up space; dec reliance on power- moving to solar and lithium. I know your vans are much lighter and tow vehicles are less hefty so it would limit weights and inclusions of course. In Australia our caravans are comparatively more expensive from $70000 to $250000+, usually related to the off road chassis and inclusions. Each country does it so differently. Great to compare.

    The Eribia is Absolutely stunning a great design. Love the twin bed set up, a must have. I will never again have an East to West bed that’s land-locked. Meaning no opening anywhere other then climbing over your partner. The bed needs to be the most important part in your camper; the quality of sleep is essential when going camping. And that Swift in the small TT is over the top! Our current TT “travel trailer” is North to South bed that allows exit on each side of the bed and a true queen bed. The Euro RV’s have great small space design. With beautiful modern elements. Here in the US we basically slap a big box together and make it look like a Log-Cabin in the woods lol .. Love our 12V Compressor fridge. Appreciate the vid; greetings from from Miami, Florida.

    Discovery D4 lovely caravan. Unfortunately ours was damp at first service from what could only have been a manufacturing fault, took months to not get sorted and Bailey were extremely awkward to deal with (not accepting AWS reports) and the whole thing turned into an utter nightmare. The dealer bought it back at a huge loss to us, so one or two nights camping cost several thousand pounds in depreciation and report costs. Top tip, buy from your nearest dealer as travelling to get a defective van is a nightmare. Local dealer refused to do a warranty repair, which totally sucked. Great reviews and we might get another caravan in the future but defo not from Bailey. 😞

Whether having so many (paid extra of course) options is good or bad probably depends very much on whether a glass half full, or half empty person is buying ;-)

    I wish many of these were available in the USA. Eriba did have a small presence here many years ago, my parents owned a puck towed by a white VW. So many of these would make sense for many of the cars and crossovers sold which cannot tow over 5000 Lbs. Many of these vehicles have a 3500 or 2000 Lb. limit with brakes to tow.

    We have the Eriba 530. Looking at this 642, I agree with you re the need for an Oven and Grill. We only have a 2 burner hob and that is plentiful for camping. The pop up roof, I noticed the struts, which wouldn't last a year before breaking, however the pop up roof with a bed is a great idea. Eriba's do have quality issues, like bathroom doors flying off their hinges, tables coming loose, as they have self tappers into low density laminate covered chip board, and kitchen drawers flying out whilst travelling. The build quality is no better than a British Swift caravan. The Eriba is easy to tow though, and is not much wider than a car, which has its advantages in narrow lanes etc.

    I enjoyed the video and the variety of vans featured. I've been searching for a lightweight van suitable for towing with my EV, with a maximum total weight of 1000kg or less. Have you considered the Beachy caravan from Hobby for review? It was unveiled at the November 2023 NEC show, though it's been available in Europe for a few years. It doesn't have a cooker, which aligns with my preference and your views for alternative cooking methods. As an example: I prefer the Ninja Speedi for quicker, easier one-pot meals. Again a van offering something a little different. Do you have plans to review this lightweight, all-electric van?

  • @andrewjones-productions
    @andrewjones-productions Před 6 měsíci +1

    All those featured have their benefits and equally their failings. As with every caravan, motorhome and even a house, all will come with a compromise. One of the biggest takeaways from this is really how the caravan services are powered. The traditional three way fridges are absolutely useless in hot summers. I'm talking about nigh on 40C in the daytime and above 30C at night summers. A compressor fridge makes so much more sense. I like the drawer type compressor fridges that the French spec La Mancelle and the Trigano Caravelair Artica models have. I would also like to see manufacturers offer a choice between the gas powered heater/boiler and their diesel powered alternatives. Yes, they are available and in my market, the large bottled gas is a pain in the you know where to procure and also requires taking a certification test. In my market, we also convert the hob to be used with the cassette gas canisters (and three way fridges) that are sold EVERYWHERE. However, the best thing about all of these caravans is the lack of a daft protruding chest of drawers at the front of the trailers. It's not the chest of drawers themselves that are daft, but the way they protrude. The only manufacturer to get this right is Coachman. They have the chest of drawers embedded into the front and two lockers on either side. In summary, I think that manufacturers need to adopt a more flexible approach and going to the extreme of all electric is not necessarily the best way forward. In my neck of the woods, these vehicles are also shelters and temporary homes in the event of a natural disaster. All electric, or more poignantly, only electric, isn't the best option - even with an EV to power it. I will state however, there is no such thing as a perfect caravan and certainly not one that is fully natural disaster prepared, but they do beat sharing a gymnasium or classroom with lots of other people, surrounded only with temporary cardboard for privacy.

    • @NotAnotherWhiteBox
      @NotAnotherWhiteBox  Před 6 měsíci

      I think the British industry has a long way to catch up with fridge technology. The old Electrolux fridges of the 1980s and 1990s were pretty bulletproof so long as you kept them clean/serviced. Then Thetford got in on the act and so did Dometic and decided that fridges needed a PCB board in them, which is where all the trouble started. The technology in how the fridge worked remained unchanged since the 1960s, just how it was controlled was now electronic. I’ve seen first hand how beneficial a compressor fridge is in comparison. The drawer fridge is amazing! Though sadly 240v only, hence why it’s not fitted in the Mancelle in the UK. The downside is that the technology for now is very expensive. It would add around £2000 to the price of the caravan, which is an issue in our climate in the UK at the moment where new sales are faltering due to rapid inflation.
      The Coachman design of the front shelf and incorporated drawers is also a feature of the new Swift Challenger and Elegance models. I first saw it on ABI Award caravans in the 1980s, it’s a brilliant idea, but obviously costs more to produce. The front shelf is SO useful!

    We use the oven and grill quite a lot as well in our caravan. As most of the time we are off grid.
    Standard Basecamp caravans are so much overpriced for what you can get in a conventional caravan.
    Manufacturers should think more going forward, the less use of gas. and more use of solar panels. Fridges of the compressor type, as if the summers are going to be hotter, as 3way fridges are not up to the job when temps go 25C & above.
    I have a Swift caravan 2021 model. Build quality is very poor. The solar charge control they fitted to our caravan was a piece of junk, which has had to be replaced, as it wasn't keeping the battery charged, now have a Victron MPPT controller which does the job.
    I hope Swift have learned lessons, and now use quality solar equipment if they are going down the Eco-Solar route.

    there are no such words as conventionality or functionality. There is convention and function. The suffix is redundant.

      Unfortunately Gas, Gas bottles are gradually being fazed out. Going to have to look at alternatives means along with solar power.

      Im planing to replace gas with electric, heating with diesel heater. Few panels and batterys and you are golden, no pain in getting gas bottles with different standards in different countries.

    Who in their right mind would pay the money they now ask for a caravan

    I have a caravan but I would never pay the money they now ask
