I would add a random funny thing I wish knew before I started, wool can become rock solid! I try to have a smooth finish and I accidentally created something you could knock a person out with😂🙈 but great tips keep going!!

I found felting back soon after my husband passed. I am, or was a colored pencil artist, but my eyesight is not as well as when i was younger and my hand is not as steady. Needle felting was so much fun and memorizing that i stopped drawing and just threw myself into felting. Then I had to stop that as my mother needed my full time help as she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. After eight years she went into care but i maintained her home until she passed, I held onto the home because I was advised to do so until her personal funds were running out and then sell the home for her continued care. She passed two years ago and at 82 i am back living in my home again and just re-discovered felting and am overjoyed to have found you and your wonderful and informative videos. I will be getting out the wools and ordering better needles and also a good felting pad or make my own, just because I want to do so. Thank you so much for all your wonderful advice and I love your animals, especially the horses.

I have been felting for about 15 years. There is still so much to learn. I Make some big pieces and here are a couple of tips I have for them. Large pieces need a more solid armature. I made a large moose and in the end, he still wiggled no matter what I did. Because he had wide, large antlers, I had to weigh down his hooves . I used heavy bolts. With a large piece like this, you have to make sure the armature can stand balanced so you can be confident as you felt. Recently I have started using ugly sweaters to help build my large felt pieces. I made a life-sized selkie and built her up with layers of horrible acrylic blend sweaters. Why? Unlike wool, these terrible blends are not biodegradable. They do not wear well- they pill and usually are poorly made. I am recycling material that would just end up in a landfill. I wrap it in wool to start to give it the contour I want and felt a hard shell of felt over the sweater fillings. I usually felt hard, but that selkie would have been far too heavy if I did not have fluffy sweaters inside. Finally, support your local fiber producers. Learn to clean a raw fleece and you will learn so much about wool. Too many people never try to felt with the varieties that are out there- they only buy wool from the companies selling dyed Merino and Corriedale. I use angora , alpaca, llama, and several types of wool on a regular basis. They all have unique qualities.

I have been needle felting for just a few months but have fallen in love with it. Loved your comment that it was like meditation.Some people find the initial felting process boring but I find it to be very restful and calming. I was looking for something I could do in my lap in front of the TV and this is perfect. I am paying attention so that I don’t stab myself so I pick my tv programs so that I don’t have to watch them all the time but can listen while I felt. I do go to my work table for the details and finishing but do all the preliminary felting in a small tray in my lap that holds a felting pad, needles, and scissors. I have constant and significant pain from neuropathy in my feet but find that I can ignore it for hours on end when I’m felting. I’ve been crafting all of my life and am just delighted to find that my projects have turned out far beyond my expectations and I cannot wait to try more advanced projects. Don’t know of another craft or art form that provides such instant gratification. Thanks for all your contributions to our education. Your creations are awesome.

Hello Mary some of what you wrote was as if I had written it myself 😃 because I also sit on my sofa with a tray while watching TV, I also have problems with my feet and have COPD and you are right in saying how the felting keeps you from thinking of the discomfort. I watch and enjoy a lot of tutorials but Phillipa is my favourite.
I love this. Your such an encouraging soul. I do find Felting a form of meditation. It’s centering and quiet and I make things come alive. Such an awarding experience!

I'm so glad I came across you. I have recently taken early retirement and to fill my time I have embarked on a sewing course and loving it. This led me on to understand fabrics (I've become obsessed 😅) Then ofcourse I found felt 😮 his has taken me to another stratosphere, I love it. So my stash of fabrics are now going to be overlooked with my felt 😅. I'm going to be creative with incorporating felt into my fabric soft toy sculptures 🫣 I might be mad but after hearing your tutorials on felt and not to be afraid to try anything, sky's the limit. Hello Philippa! I asked a question the other day, and you've been so kind as to answer me the very next day! I ended up visiting a store here in Melbourne that isn't dedicated to needle felting but I found sufficient wool and some needles to start, I ordered a kit that came with a lovely felted mat and spiral and star needles (love the spiral! 1 already broken, though). My first project is autumney leaves and fox on a mobile. It is truly addictive ☺️ ill keep watching your videos, so helpful! Thank you 😊

My third piece is coming along nicely with a wire armature for the arms. Not scary or difficult at all, shoulders and neck are tricky for me. I am excited to have found you and your videos. I have never felted before but I think i may have found my craft! I love sculpting with clay and i live crafting with items other people throw away. This looks like there is so much more freedom! I am familiar with working with armatures so i have that in my favor as well!! I am subscribing to your channel now and i thank you for sharing your wisdom!!! ❤❤❤❤❤
No problem, it definitely is sculpting but with wool so no mess, I really love it especially after trying lots of other crafts xx
When I felt I use my hands the same as cutting vegetables. My dominate hand holds the needle(s) simular to a very sharp knife. I keep my fingers close to the tip of the needle. This position helps my aim to stab the project and not stab my non-dominate hand. Always knowing where the blade/needle is. My non-dominate hand holds the fruit/wool with my finger tips curled under my knuckles. Also, I try to avoid air stabbing. Keeping the project touching the mat helps to keep it stable. ♥️

This week I saw an artist I follow give Felting a try & he create an adorable Pikachu through it! Since I've been wishing to buy some pokemon plushies anyways it seems much more fun, cost effective & worthwhile to get myself some felting kits and learning how to create them myself instead!

This was so helpful to listen to. I've been felting for about a year? I agree with you that it is so addicting. My one comment to add is that I watch many videos and find I want to try so many different types of felting (2D, 3d, landscapes, wet felting, needle felting...) I feel that trying
a lot of different things has helped me narrow down what I want to concentrate on. Now, I need to practice, and concentrate on one type of
felting to gain more confidence in my abilities. I look forward to watching more of your videos! I am American and just LOVE listening to your british accent!

thank you. so informative. I just discovered needle felting. I think in part to take a break from the tiny DIY Garden shed, the plants are killing me, creating them in the digital space then making them into 3D. I am a jeweller metalsmither, but rarely make jewellery now , and can't wait to see what you say about armature. I realized that felting is something you can take on holiday and so portable!! And most importantly I don't need any digital or computers to assist me.
It's a really fantastic, addictive and very relaxing, definitely portable and patience is a great help. You sound very crafty so this would be a perfect addition, thanks for watching ❣️
Thank you for the point about needle color coding (not standardized across manufacturers).
Getting such items intermixed can create real frustration - as a beginner it is easy for one (such as myself) to not see significant differences that will make working and learning more difficult because you are not using what you think you are using.
Maybe adding a marker of some kind for a given set of needles would help me. When a bunch of stuff get taken out it is easy for me to mix stuff together.
I now add coloured tape on the top, easier to hold and you can unify the code to what you want, thanks for watching.

I just finished my first little penguin last night. I had the kit for a couple of months, telling myself I was avoiding it because I was doing other crafts, but the truth is, I was afraid it would be awful. Well, it's not as perfect as the one in the tutorial video, but it's not bad. I really want to do some more. I also just learned about felting pictures, which I think I'd really like. With the little animals, I like that they don't take long to do, compared with other crafts. Thanks for your hints.

I've been wondering about needle felting for a bit, actually, this is really informative and helpful. I'm a weaver, mainly, since I'm not an especially dexterous person but needle felting doesn't look like it requires too much dexterity like crochet or knitting does.
It's really fluid and natural, like sculpture but with wool, very therapeutic too x
I’ve only been Needle Felting since March, but, thanks to finding you, I believe I’m progressing by leaps and bounds! I think you’ve covered all of the basic things to know, but I’d link your review of Needle Felting books. Also, everything you can find on CZcams - because you’re brilliant, you have at least one video on other creator pages to check out and follow. The only thing I would really underline is - whatever your “skill” level - take your time, and don’t rush. Patience is really helping me. As always, you are so very kind to teach and encourage us newbies! Thank you! ❤️

Yes, it's fairly well known but not many local stores have supplies. If you are UK, it's World Of Wool online, Felt Wildly, The Makerrs, Mum's Makery, if you are US it's Living Felt, Sarafina Fibre Art, Grey Fox Felting and more on Etsy xx

Thanks for this video, I'm still trying to learn how to make the basic shapes but I'm ending up with pretty hairy, lopsided results so far, haha. My shapes aren't turning out discernible. It's hard to figure out where to begin or how to troubleshoot myself, but I've enjoyed your advice so far.
Thank you, definitely roll you wool tight to help get the initial shape and it's always easier with carded wool (but you will have heard me say that!). Practice lots as you improve so much every time you create something but you don't realise it, keep your first makes then look at it in three months and you can see your improvement xx

Thank you, that is super kind of you to say and yes, definitely give it a go. It really strengthens your felts, just hold the needle lightly as you felt near the wire. If it's not for you then don't worry, lots of needle felters don't use wire just work on felting pieces firmly instead. Thanks for watching and commenting xx

My wife’s birthday is in two weeks I want to get her a kit , just don’t want to overwhelm her. She paints rocks and does diamond painting, and was thinking about crocheting, but I really think she’d love this better.
It's a great craft, very therapeutic, I sell kits in my Etsy shop plus The crafty kit company is also good.

Finding a needle felting dedicated shop isn't that easy for most people, but what's most commin is fabric shops, some of them have sections for needle felting
Definitely true, it's always nicer to see what you are buying in real life x
My biggest concern probably is how to clean the needle felted figurines, especially if they have wire armature because washing would make the wire rust and possibly stain through the wool. When I make something, especially if it's to sell, I like to know that it is durable, otherwise I feel I have to sell cheap. If it needs special care I like to be able to inform the customer. Craft takes a lot of time and skill, even if it is for myself I want it to last. Everything eventually collects dust from sitting there or dirt from handling. I absolutely love your tutorials, I am not one to subscribe to channels but yours is that good :). I'd really appreciate it if you could do a video on the washing/caring for needle felted items particularly the furry ones and the ones with wire armature, as I have not been able to find one specific to figurines or ornaments.
I'm afraid you don't wash 3D needle felted items as it would cause the wool to felt together and ruin the effect, you can wash 2D pictures, gentle hand wash though. I have no real issue with dust gathering but you can use a paint brush on the surface gently or hoover nozzle with tights over the end. With regards sturdiness, it comes down to how well felted an item is. I have a horse head I did 5 years ago and it's still in perfect condition. If the creation has been softly felted and not firmed up then it will degrade and go floppy but apart from cats getting to my customers creations I haven't had any returns but it's definitely a no to washing anything felted xx
Thank you so much for your response. I live in a very dusty place, I suppose it is worth keeping them in a glass cabinet to preserve their beauty and/dusting occasionally as you suggested. I find needle felting to be very therapeutic and I love it. So I'm going to keep doing it anyway, even if I never sell or keep them in a box. I bought polyester classic loft batting and microfibre stuffing? Would either of those work as core wool?
Microfiber stuffing should be fine but it might be very crunchy and I've no idea for loft batting, give it a go and see x

Glad you liked it, I have read lots of other people take it in hand luggage, put needles in plastic container etc for safety, I haven't done it myself. Plus places strict on plants and bugs coming in, like Australia, might be tricky about the wool x

You are getting me very excited to try this craft! My one reservation is the treatment of the sheep in the process of shearing. Do you know if there are good quality wools that are ethically sourced and/or cruelty free? I'm seeing some posts online about Alpaca wool and also, acryllic wool as possible alternatives. Thank you so much - your animals are AMAZING!
Here's my video on vegan wools as a great alternative but shearing sheep is necessary and although uncomfortable for 5 mins, it's not painful. There can be the odd tiny nick but it would be far worse not to shear the sheep. We have bred self shedding out of our modern day sheep. Muesling is the only process I know that is uncalled for, normally in Australia. In that case buy UK based or go on Etsy for smaller suppliers who you can chat to. Hope that helps x
@@feltsbyphilippa if you have ever seen a flyblown sheep in the large paddocks in Australia you may not flippantly talk of mulesing. I've seen many sheep dying a very cruel, painful death from flystrike. Our paddocks are many times larger than any in Europe. Maybe you should see for yourself. It is not an unnecessary procedure in this country.
I think it's the use of museling without anesthetic that I would definitely be against, lots of wool companies are against it and promise museling free wool so they obviously have concerns. Shearing is essential and pain free but there are ways around museling that are being investigated so that would great and yes, no sheep should suffer with flystrike x
I'm new at this and struggle with not tensing up too much in my neck, arm and hands. I try to stop and stretch every 5 minutes or so but still end up stiff the next day.

It definitely takes time to build up muscle so lots of breaks are needed, I felt quite a lot and it took about 6 months before I was used to it but even then now I have to be careful. Here's my video on injuries from this, hope you are enjoying it despite getting stiff x

When I was beginning, and afraid of armature, I practiced with pipe cleaner armatures because they are a cheap option.

Thank you for making me feel relevant! I live on a slim income but I love my crafts! I'm a newbie felter and I saw videos using pipe cleaners and they went in so easy. Well not for me. But I did figure out that after I cut off most of the "fur" on the pipe cleaners that if I folded them in half and twisted together that it made a much more sturdy piece to be able to poke through felted bodies to make arms and legs. My only regret with the whole process so far is that I recently just heard about felting. So I'm excited to go on this journey. Oh I found out about felting through my other lived hobby of making miniature dollhouses and everything that goes in them. A CZcamsr who makes dollhouses out of cardboard made a live video of trying felting for the 1st time. So I'm super grateful!

How do you get eyes even.?. mine always end up cross eyed !,,
I push the needle through from one eye socket to the other but look from the front above keeping it level, looks of looking and adjusting, don't glue until you are completely happy x
If I'm making a penguin do I make the head completely perfect before adding to the body? And other pieces as well? Or do I connect them all before they're perfect and then finish them all once they're all connected? Also, I live in the states and I've found that merino wool is everywhere and I've been told to be careful. But I don't have a lot of options near me that are also budget friendly for someone who lives on a very small income. I've gone to some of the popular companies that everyone has mentioned and unfortunately I can't afford too much of the stuff. Do you any advice for someone like me? I found out about felting recently from another CZcamsr who makes miniature dollhouses and stuff out of cardboard which is another thing I've dreamed of doing since I can't afford to buy the pieces already made. Plus I think it's more fun to make on your own. I was instantly hooked on needle felting and I want to make the best of it and I also think it would add character to any of my future miniature dollhouse projects. Any advice you or anyone else has for a newbie would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!
I prefer to make heads separately and add on but normally if I have wire armature the legs are already on. If not wire then I add on and cover the joins. You can use Merino tops if needed but just card it first so it felts better however it takes longer to felt down. Maybe you could buy a fleece direct from a sheep farmer, wash and card it yourself. It's a lot of work but you can pick up some fleece for not much. However buy it direct be careful online unless it's the actual fleece in the pictures. Plus you would have to dye for other colours. Maybe call some of the companies you have seen and ask if they have any left over wool they sell off cheap. Or just buy core wool and maybe dye it yourself. Hope some of that helps x

It is but test it first, it can be quite crunchy once felted but definitely useable x

Hi! I really want to get into needle felting, I haven't been able to yet, but I wanted to ask if felted items are ever child safe. I recently became an aunt (super excited!) and wanted to make a toy sort of thing but I've seen in many places that felted items aren't safe for kids. Are there things I could do to make it safe? Hi, I'm afraid that's correct, they can always be pulled apart and probably have plastic eyes and wire inside. Maybe look at felt material toys, that could be safer x
