  • MasterChef NZ winner Sam Low shows Stuff food editor Emily Brookes how to cook classic prawn toast while also chatting about MasterChef and what he plans to do with his win. Read: bit.ly/3coSfTi
It’s a Tuesday afternoon, and four of us are packed into a small inner-city Auckland apartment. There’s me, Stuff video journalist Abigail Dougherty, and a public relations person who’s here to make sure neither of us reveal the identity of the fourth person: Sam Low, MasterChef New Zealand’s 2022 champion.
The finale is still five days away from airing, and after sitting on his secret for months, this is the first time Low has spoken about his win to anyone not involved in the show’s production.
“Honestly, it’s like coming out of the closet again,” says Low, who is queer. “I don’t know how to feel at the moment. I’m kind of living the process as it comes. At the moment I’m just so happy that I won staying true to myself and cooking my food.”

Congratulations Sam I was not really following MasterChef however at some stage the personalities grabbed me with you being the star personality ⭐️ so looking forward to your cook book also would love to see a book published about your journey from being a migrant in New Zealand to where you are now. 🙏
