Also, when they sang "Anchor" you could see the emotion he was putting into it. It was like he was singing twice as loud, with twice the heart, because he knew none of them would be able to sing along with him (due to the language barrier).

10:45 I exactly saw this in my training days. I served as ROK Marine. One of my bro was about to fail the night mountain marching (with all gears on. freaking heavy). And the DI came from nowhere. DI grabed my fellow trainee and did the exact same thing to him. "You are being a marine by suffering. Marines are not born, we are made. You will get through this and you will be a Marine. I want you to be a proud marine. Walk!". And my fellow trainee did not gave up. I can not forget it. That DI was a true mentor, true teacher.

In this very first scene is Josh, the producer of this series and of their channel Korean Englishmen. His partner and best friend and co producer and director is in the red coat. His name is Ollie.
In the background is the headmaster of the boy's school, who is participating too. But he and Josh and Ollie didn't have to sleep in the barracks with the boys. But Josh and the headmaster did join them in the training. I wrote a long comment just yesterday on Part 1. Briefly. I was so confused because I was a subscriber to Josh and Ollie's channel Jolly. Where they travel the world and taste and sample food and review it. I'm a big fan of that show. Look it up. It's highly entertaining. Anyway, I didn't understand why Josh was on this show with high school boys. I did my research this weekend and went back to the very beginning where Josh met Ollie on the first day of university. Became fast friends. Started this channel. Without going into detail.. you can do the research. Josh is the one with the Korean background. He loves the culture and food. And he was old friends with the school master. So Josh and Ollie pitched a plan to introduce these boys to Korean food. That was 2 years ago. The series was a big hit in the UK. Lots of boys took part in the interviews and food sampling. Go find that series. It's delightful. So it was so successful that Josh and Ollie picked 7 students to actually travel to Korea for 2 weeks to expose them to the culture and food. It was a graduation present for 7 boys. That series was a big big hit. Then they devised this big surprise for 6 of them to return to Korea to film them in military training. The boys would have returned to Korea to do anything just to eat the delicious Korean food again. Part 1 is not the first day of this series. It's just Part 1 Day 1 of their training. The start is when they are chosen to come back and have fun days in Korea before the training starts. If you have time, it's so fun to go back to day 1 when the first boys tasted Korean food for the first time in London. And there's a whole continuing story after this. Including Josh and Ollie and their wives being invited to the dinner at Buckingham Palace where the King hosts the President of Korea. Josh and Ollie are very famous in the UK! Enjoy day 2.

Boot camp/basic training is really tough and a lot of. outsiders looking in might think they go to far, but if you keep in mind that they are training young boys to stay alive if and when they are sent into battle it starts to make sense.. Something as simple as obeying a command immediately can save you from stepping on an IED or walking into a trap that someone else has seen.. Everything they do in basic is a skill that might save you or your buddies life in a war zone.. And yes these guys will be close friends for life..

In Korea, Drill Sergeants (black caps in the army, navy seems to have red caps with writing as Drill Sergeants) are similar to what you said in that they are usually sergeants with 15+ years or experience and they have to undergo a couple of weeks for additional drill sergeant training.
Drill Instructors (red caps in the army), on the other hand, are enlisted soldiers. D.S.s screen the trainees during the time of their training and select the ones who are the fittest and with leadership skills. The trainees will then get an offer of becoming a drill instructor rather than going to another unit; if they say yes, they will learn the ropes as time progresses from their superiors.
Putting the log over the head is also because the IBS(Inflatable boats) are about 200Kg and sometimes u have to carry the boats on ur head when going long distances. Or, at least, that was the reason I heard from a marine friend lol

I used to be in a flag-raising troop for 3 years and this brought back some memories of absolute suffering. We always train in the middle of the day and we had this training to perfect our hand form for salutes by laying our hands up to our arms flat on top of hot pavements (the paving blocks had been burning in the summer sun for hours so it was hot HOT), we got calluses and slight burn on our hands just from the first time doing it. 7 years later now my hand still hold that perfect form whenever I straighten it 😂
Respect for everyone who has experience in any sort of military training. Definitely worth it, I feel like we don't get to experience that kind of team solidarity anywhere else

I just found this video just now. Six years ago Josh and Ollie made a video called "Let's Talk". It's on CZcams under their Korean Englishman channel. They sit down to talk and go back and share how they started. What made them go viral. Roscoe. You'll love this. They asked people in Korea to send them Korean snacks. And WOW did they get a room full of packages. So then they went around sharing this food with their family and friends and filming it. It's fun to watch if you want to know how they started. It reminded me of Roscoe when he didn't know how to do anything. But this is really the beginning...not filmed or shared. Josh moved to China with his family when he was 12. At his private school all the students weren't Chinese. They were Korean. They taught him the language and the culture and the appreciation of their delicious food and how to cook it. When he moved back to London he realized no one there knew anything about the Korean culture which he loved and adored. So he wanted to share with everyone. Kind of like BTS went out on the streets asking strangers to come to their concert. Josh went out on the street and asked people if they had ever eaten kimchi. Ollie was Behind the camera. Josh eventually taught Ollie how to speak and read Korean and love the Korean culture as much as he did. There are some details I'm still learning. But Josh married a Korean woman. And she is a great cook. Somehow Josh got a connection to BTS and hosted one of their events. Then BTS went back to their house where his wife cooked for them. She remembers JK coming back into the kitchen to ask if she could cook some more food for him. Some food that got gobbled up so fast. Anyway, she is a great cook with a published cookbook. She has her own channel. So more videos to watch if you want to explore. One video I watched they rated the top 10 meals they ever ate on their travels. Being born in Oklahoma and living in Texas too and being raised on this food I was proud when #2 on their list was eating homemade biscuits and homemade sausage cream gravy for breakfast for the first time. They were mesmerized at how delicious it was. And if you eat the real homemade stuff it's divine. You probably don't know....at least they did when I went to college in Texas ...McDonalds serves a pretty good biscuits and gravy. Good enough for college students to eat for breakfast every day! Thanks Roscoe for Day 2 of training commentary.

Long time Korean Englishman and Jolly (Josh and Ollie) fan. Just finding you now because of these. I've watched these guys grow up through high school and their first year of uni through Josh and Ollie. Throughout the process, they were introduced to Korean food, language, and culture, which culminated in a graduation trip to Korea, which was a hoot. Max and Armand also got an extra trip to experience some uni life this past year. Now, they did this series and reunited the boys, who haven't all seen each other for a year, to get a taste and appreciation for what all Korean young men experience as a requirement. You're getting the truncated version. The entire series is amazing. I applaud everyone who participated, and impressed with you, as a veteran, for your encouraging (and not discouraging) comments. Yes, Nati has big, big hair. Ha ha! But they did take it down quite a bit. ;)

This is so fascinating, I watched the original series and your perspective is really eye opening in a lot of ways. I think I was recommended your video at the right time and for a reason. Your words about getting through something even though you're in such pain because its not just about you, but everyone else who is also going through that pain made really moved me. I lost my sister recently and needed to hear this.

33:51 I'm Korean, and I went to ROK military. The problem about "loophole" soldier in situation like that is, when they say "Oh, I'm not feeling okay," the drills sergeant might say, "sure, come out here and get checked by the medic." but then, that would mean his squad will have one less man to carry to weight of the log. Likewise, during a long march, a "loophole" soldier might say, I'm hurt, and give up.. but that would mean that someone from his squad would have to carry HIS battle backpack for him.

Something to note about these hand raising or leg raising exercises and them being absolute tortures because your blood is being drained as you're raising or arms or your legs, there's nothing there to keep it functioning so it becomes extremely painful as you start to lose feeling in them. Then you're forced to do some exercises with either your hands or your legs right after that? It really becomes a huge mental situation that you need to push yourself through. Find it so funny when Max mentions how he trains himself at the gym to prepare himself, but most of the time people don't train like this, he might as well be unprepared.

I love watching this reaction with this "audience" on your channel because, not only have I already watched and loved all the Korean Englishman episodes from the very start with these Fulham School boys going back 2 or so years now, but most of us are also BTS Army/fans and so we're all thinking of the BTS members who are all enlisted now. It's so great that they've given us a such a hands-on glimpse of what they all have to go through. And I'm appreciating the insights from your personal experience too, Roscoe... as much as I wish this world had no use for soldiers, conflict and war, I admire and respect everyone who's had to go through enlistment, and can only hope that these guys we're seeing onscreen and all their peers, past and present, will never have to put it to use for real.

I watched all of these already but am excited for your take on it. I was USN 30 years ago. I find this so interesting. It was clear from the first video that the company they joined was one already in progress. I must say the marching was horrendous and made worse with the Brits placed in front. The inside guys did not get the half step memo to keep the formation in line on turns. This was a good choice for Josh, specifically, in the last couple of months before his baby arrives because he would not be able to do this again for a while!
