    5:20 anyone can create consumerism/lifestyle content
    5:25 and it's always some form of aspirational
    6:20 shopping can be unrelatable too
    6:39 financial stability is aspirational
    7:09 the illusion that "you can have what I have"

    9:34 the influencer feedback loop
    10:37 exhibit A - the Tarte trip to Bora Bora
    12:03 adding INSULT TO INJURY

    I got “got” today… confession time.🤦🏼‍♀️ A Facebook ad for a flower I had been wanting but was not on my list for this year’s plantings went on sale. I clicked. I bought not only that but some others. Was it a lot? $60 I hadn’t planned on spending this year. It was impulsive and not a “need” obviously. This is the shopping problem I deal with-I had told myself NO MORE for this year. Ughhhhh. I justified it as “I’ll get it eventually so I just saved money because of the sale” which was dumb because there’s always more time and more landscaping to do-nothing is ever urgent. (Sigh)

    Great video! I wonder…What role does CZcams play in the cycle with the gold, silver, platinum buttons issued for followers? It’s rewarding people as well for influencing what is their cut? Social media is simply a big advertising machine now.
    The people “influencing” as a job I agree is a problem when it’s not skills based. As they say, “don’t quit your day job” and I really pity those who give up a real career for internet fame. It boggles my mind! Glorified salespeople… wowza!
    There’s a guy I watch who quit his real job (has a wife and kids) to build LEGO online. He spends thousands of dollars at the drop of a hat and I wonder every time-how does he support his family? 😳

    • @Alexas.nobuyyear
      @Alexas.nobuyyear  Před 22 dny

      Hopefully he's making enough from CZcams advertising money! But yeah it does seem a little strange, like society has reached a point where entertainment is more important than practical matters. Which could be both good and bad, I guess !

    Bora Bora is on my bucket list as well, maybe one day! Brand trips are bizarre to me and I believe that was the tipping point for me. PR was pretty minimal in the beginning of CZcams and it was fun to see a sneak peek of new products but once it became excessive and then the brands trips came along... ugh I can’t even watch those videos, I guess I am a hater or whatever 😂 but to me those products/brands that do do brand trips go on my never buy list. I think eventually the masses will get to that point as well, there’s a shift already where influencers get called out for going on some of these brand trips. And I’m seeing more people turn on celebrity cash grab brands. It’s a bit surreal to see but yeah it’s a crazy ride!

    • @Alexas.nobuyyear
      @Alexas.nobuyyear  Před 19 dny

      Yeah it is pretty wild to me to think about...like I definitely don't blame influencers for going, (it's the brand's offer after all) and in some ways, what a cool opportunity...BUT actually they go to this cool place and are kind of obligated to be filming and socially performing the whole time instead of totally present for the trip. And yeah definitely doesn't wanna make me buy from those brands, there are so many alternative makeup brands that no one has to choose Tarte (in this case) for anything these days!

    This is the first video I’ve watched where you say what instrument you play. I love finding viola players out in the wild. I played in high school and have been thinking about picking it back up recently. Definitely wouldn’t be a no buy thing since I no longer have the viola I used to play but I think it would be good for me. Especially since I’ve been thinking about it for nearly a year

    Some other important consequences: not getting further education ( which like it or not teaches how to think and research and interact with others and follow through on tasks and responsibilities), not building up a credit score and Social Security funds, and buying a house to build equity, and honing a craft that (like playing the viola!🎻😎) takes years of practice and sacrifice ( not on alters! ). Are we getting lazy? Are we hating leaving our basements? Are we unable to follow directions and answer to authority? I guess we will see!

    First of all, I have watched every one of your videos. I really love your tone and way of thought.
    Second point, I have about 25 videos opened in different tabs as my "playlist". When I start researching a topic I open tons of related videos from the suggestions and watch them over the next few days. I was watching Hannah Louise Poston randomly right after this video. I thought it might be interesting for you. In a video from over a year ago called "THE PROBLEM WITH DECLUTTERS ON CZcams" at about 12 minutes she gives the perspective of an influencer on why they have so many things. As she does, she puts it very articulately.
    It's likely that you've already seen this video, but was worth mentioning here nonetheless. I know you're going to be taking about this tomorrow, so I thought it was a great coincidence that your video and hers were in my "playlist" back to back.

    • @Alexas.nobuyyear
      @Alexas.nobuyyear  Před 20 dny +1

      I have seen that video of hers and remember enjoying it (I saw it when it came out!) But I just revisited it, with my kind of "new framework" as someone who started a no buy year and I think I now see some different nuances of her metaphor with the chef and the groceries. I question whether one individual beauty influencer "uses" the makeup products in the same way as the chef, because they are not doing makeup on a bunch of people like a professional makeup artist might, but just using it on themselves and presenting it for review through the screen.
      The way they generate income is if other people watch their reviews, or possibly, then are influenced to buy through their links, or take on sponsored content from beauty brands who want to sell to the audience of the influencer. The makeup is still a "tool of the trade" but the trade is not based on the skill USING the tools - the chef's skill to cook you a meal that you then pay for, as in, you are buying some of their groceries that they have transformed through skill you don't have or don't want to exert the effort to do - but on the influencer's skill to sell a product by showing it online. You as a viewer still need to apply the "skill" aspect of using the "tool".
      Reviewers who are "skilled at reviewing" may indeed provide a genuine service in saving people the effort of researching products, which is valid! But I think I have problems when their energy seems more geared towards SUGGESTING instead of reviewing (because that makes them more income) which then muddies the waters as to whether a product is objectively suited to an individual watching.
      I do think Hannah in particular doesn't make too many "suggestions" or take a ton of sponsorships, and makes it clear that HER preferences are not everyone's, so my feelings of "ick" are not directed at her methods - I think she is at least trying to do her best not to influence just for the sake of the income, even if I might have purchased things she featured and wanted to try them in the past.
      Anyway thanks for the suggestion and comment, sorry for the essay response - I do still follow Hannah and appreciate her ideas, and don't mean any shade by engaging in this discussion!

      @VixVida Před 20 dny +1

      @@Alexas.nobuyyear @Alexas.nobuyyear I've also followed her for years, but I discovered her through no buy, not makeup. I don't wear makeup, so I can't relate much to that content. I subscribed, but only for her occasional fashion & philosophical videos. I was drawn to her word choice and way of speaking.
      I definitely agree with what you said about being a beauty influencer versus a chef, and the difference between a beauty influencer and a makeup artist.
      I agree that an individual beauty influencer and a chef with a restaurant are not a fair comparison. A better comparison is a makeup artist to a chef. That makes sense. And a makeup artist, Hannah is not. So although her situation is understandable, it's not completely justifiable in my opinion. It seems to lack ownership of one's actions. Especially for someone who is very much aware of the topic.
      I see titles for haul this haul that, and I feel like they are not the slightest bit aware of their actions. Yes, they know about climate change and various environmental issues, but the idea that they are contributing so heavily is completely unregistered.
      That is why I love you content and how you are presenting yourself. You're giving the wonderfully honest perspective of someone who is educating themselves about consumerism. I think your content will be a wonderful resource in the future (tomorrow and on) for others to stumble on and begin their own consumption journey.
      As someone also on the journey to own less, I have sought out this kind of content for YEARS! I wanted a full recount of one's experiences. I wanted the details and the development.
      I feel like most of these extended no / low buy challenges or any other kind of fashion challenge begin with an initial video introducing the challenge and the length of time. And then you get a second video updating the experience while they're in it, could be one month or even 6 months later from the initial video. And then finally you get a conclusionary video at the end, totalling to two or three videos over the course of a year.
      I was so sick of seeing videos titled "I did so & so for 30 days" "I did so & so for one year here's what happened" without even the initial introduction video. It's extremely unbelievable. They just come on already a guru of sorts and want to teach me their lessons learned. Cringe. (Of course there are gems in this style. But most feel like a copy paste video of everyone else.) I was so sick of seeing them I even decided to make my own series a few years ago, but I never did.
      That's your strength, in my opinion. You're walking alongside your viewer rather than preaching words of wisdows at the end of a journey no one even saw or new happened like so many others do. I imagine you may indeed share conclusionary wisdom as you gain knowledge and insights from your experiences. But there's a huge difference.
      I like your videos because you are articulate and the topics are very well planned and structured. No pressure to continue that way I do love a good unscripted chit chat as well.

    • @Alexas.nobuyyear
      @Alexas.nobuyyear  Před 19 dny

      Thank you! Likewise I discovered Hannah through no buy and am not THAT into makeup, but still have tended to watch because I become "loyal" to people I follow. Now I'm starting to be selective and make sure the subject they're going to cover has some value before I click, even with "favorite creators".
      I am also kind of disillusioned with the "I did x for 30 days" or whatever videos, it's just not realistic and while it makes a nice tidy and "clickable" presentation, we don't always get a true picture of where they were before or where they go after related to their "new challenge" or experiment. I think the "guru" presentation is a result of what the algorithm rewards, people search for answers to their problems.
      You should make your own series! I've actually thought about doing this too! In perhaps more of a "spoof" way where my narration is exactly covering the questions left unanswered or making "fun" commentary about how arbitrary/impersonal some of the "advice" is. We'll see if I get around to it! 😄

    I had this image in my mind while listening - placing an influencer doing their thing in a setting of someone’s living room, like in those meetings of Tupperware and other MLM-y vibes (and yes, this is inspired by one of the newer The Financial Diet vids). I feel that obscuring ways we are targeted by influencers could be an interesting thought excercise - how far can we go? Let’s imagine those 50 people we will watch while scrolling for an hour on TikTok in the same room with us and all of them symultaneusly trying to sell us 5-10 items… Sounds like horror to me - maybe we should „materalize” them more? Maybe more surrealist stories should be written about those Stanley girlies who forgot that you can actually use a bag, you don’t need to clip all your necessities onto your portable cup…

    I definitely cant stand rage bait and waste baiting. It reminds me of how magicians use misdirection to command your attention. You're too busy being mad to realize you're giving your attention away, and driving the influencer's engagement. I don't like rewarding bad behavior and i think that's why the celebrity block out was trending as a concept as a reaction against the shallow social media sponsored content culture.
