I vividly remember seeing Alphonse live in Vancouver, Canada in 1975... the same week in which I also saw the original Return To Forever, Weather Report (Chester Thompson on drums), and Billy Cobham's band. Now, we all know how phenomenal Billy was at that time. But his performance that particular week didn't compare to that of Mr. Mouzon, who was literally jaw-dropping. Alphonse was playing an enormous double kit with god-knows how many toms from here to there. And I have never seen anyone - not Billy, not Dennis, nobody - who could play a blazing 32 note single stroke roll at FFF volume, seamlessly perfect and continuous, around that many drums. And of course, he grooved like a superpowered M-F all night long. Oh, yes - Mr. Mouzon was a monster!
Dude, I would have said the same shit , but I'm just dJ with good ear . Billy C was always my favorite drummer but Alphonse was a different cat and I know speed isn't everything but he had it and more .
They’re all great! Billy, Lenny and Alphonse, but all those ideas and next level speed came from Billy in the manner of blazing single strokes around the kit top to bottom. I like Alphonse sometimes just as much as Billy and sometimes more, but being a drummer of almost 40 years and studying all of these Cats I will say without any doubt that in no way was Alphonse faster or more powerful than Billy!!! NO WAY!!! Billy could lead with both hands faster and BETTER than ANYONE of his time. Tony Williams is incomparable to anyone and EVEN TONY never showed the independence to lead at speed with his right hand or his left like Billy. No way was Alphonse faster than Billy!
Alphonse Mouzon seems like the brother of Billy Cobham switched at birth, so many stylistic parallels!
Very similar . I saw Cobham at the U of W , always considered him the best , but Alphonse Mouzon is a extraordinaire .
RIP Mr. Alphonse! :(
Alphonse was a four wheel drive Ferrari super fast when needed , went any where on a dime aka poly rhythmic changes and funky to boot
Neckbreaking tempo !
in the 70ies there were: billy cobham, alphonse mouzon, bill bruford and lenny white developing the drumset to another dimension
@@williamperri3437 indeed as well as neil peart, bernard purdie, terry bozzio, simon phillips, steve smith, tony allen, jack de johnette, michael shrieve, john bonham and ... 🤗
@@adnilrummut105 Simon is INCREDIBLE! He took what he learned from Billy and ran with it. Most top players can’t touch him… but how inventive was he in the 70’s?
@@williamperri3437 well as far as he played in judas priests "sin after sin" in '77 he invented at least the most effective metal drumming in the 70ies, doesn't he?!
An old friend once told me that Alphonse makes BILLY COBHAM look like Edgar Varese
Bottom line...ALPHONSE MOUZON was as good a drummer as any the world . Who's the Best , doesn't matter .
fantastic drummer
Alphonse was a phenom on drums plain and simple!
RIP, That`s Some Orchestra up there,
God Gary Bartz so young! I believe he's still around. Goldberg on fire.
All great players!
First time I was able to value his jazzy rock labour was at a TV concert with Gary Bartz on soprano sax, 40 years ago. What a sad Christmas time now.
My mind is blown
Damn groovy stuff, reminds me of Cobham´s Stratus-LP !!
Damn, this was a DANGEROUS BAND!🤣🤣🤣✌😎Alphonse was an Engine, driving that beat through, that so by Stu Goldberg,on Synth, was CRUCIAL!🔥🔥🔥
great music of Alphonse !!! thanks god that he send me a lot of concerts on DVD from him before he died!! RIP my friend, I miss you very much!!!!!
MADMAN ALPHONSE LAYING IT DOWN
Thanks Alphonse, love all your music, familiar with your playing with Larry. Great group here.
Che dire? Genio della batteria. Impressionante.

They Sound "SENSATIONAL"!
Welton gite is a master bass player he holds that groove better than anybody
rest in peace musician
#GetIt!
I'll tell you one damn thing , there was nobody better and its a shame 99% know about the ringo but not one of greatest drummers of all time !
I'm not really into jazz -type music, BUT,one of my ALL-TIME favorite tunes is off of FUNKY SNAKEBOOT, namely "My Little Rosebud".
His "Ascorbic Acid" off of MIND TRANSPLANT is MIND BOGGLING!!!!!!😵😱😵😱👍👍
Worse than that, they think Travis Barker is one of the greatest drummers of all time.
Rip Mr. Mouzon. God Bless.
Words can't say enough so i will just go with the the comment below from Ceazs Vinyl. Epic !!! & we do miss him.
Stu Goldberg is a Monster!
When I first heard Goldberg I thought it was George Duke, the man was Badass!
I owned a set of Sonor drums at one point.
Epic!!! RIP A.M
Have "Virtue" lp, Ace band. The interplay between Stu Goldburg & Mouzon is insane. Shame poor sound, but thankyou so much for this.
Yep, I still have that album, too. Changed my attitude to drumming back then, totally
Excellent!!!
Pianist clothes looks like what the sound of this song would look like physically

INTENSE SHIT
Whatever happened to the clip with them playing Stu Goldberg's piece Westward Reached???
Wow sounds like cobham
I'm surprised the audience never clapped after Mouzon's drum solo. They always do with other drummers during and after their drum solos. Very strange audience.
It's Germany, maybe they wait until the end, OR maybe Cobham was in town the week before and they're still recovering from his playing.. ;-)
@@Oneness100 Germans sometimes forget to have fun listening to serious jazz, and are a bit paralysed. Doesn't mean that they don't like it.
It’s like that in some eastern euro and Middle East countries, I saw a performance and after the song nobody did anything… I think in the west people cheer wayyyy tooo much for no reason at shows
@@hotlanta35 How many Whoos drove me crazy? What 's so important about a Woo Hoo on a recording??
@hagnuj1070
Mediocre and lame bands/rappers always want the audience to get over the top with cheering
7:38 duophonic minimoog?
only thing I can think is that OSC2 (with a different pitch) might be under control of a footpedal or wheel.. but yep not heard that on Minimoog before.
John Bonham (Led Zep) was a huge fan. While staying at the Continental Hyatt House(the Riot House) in L.A., Bonham would play Mouzon's solo albums at super high decibels and play along on his drum set in his room- at 3am !! Much to the anger of anyone else that wasn't a drummer or rock 'n roller. This is documented in the book LZ-'75, which chronicles Zep's American tour of 1975. 😎
That is fantastic lore.
