  • I was planning on needing to possibly replace many parts on this PVM, oh well. This is a Sony PVM 8042Q CRT Trinitron Monitor that I purchased off of eBay. The seller accepted my best offer of $61 shipped for this PVM. It was advertised as not-working.

    I'm sure alot of people don't realize that this type of pvm is passive and needs an active signal to show any life. So it's understandable that someone that might not know to much about this type of monitor would confuse it for being possibly broke.

    This week I got a working 14M2E for 58 Euro/Dollar from an auction site (not eBay). No information about the technical condition, but luckily it was working fine, only the metal case was a bit beaten up (straightened it with a wooden hammer). I got a pretty nice picture after following some of your guides, thanks!

    I went to an E-Waste center that was doing some sales to be able to pay for rent and me and my friend walked out with 2 8045q and 2 8041q for $40 a piece! All of them work although my 8041q has a lopsided screen due to some crack on the corner, it also makes some of the buttons like the RGB comp and blue only to not function properly

I recently picked up the black version of it and it has similar screen issues to yours on the horizontal edges. I added s-video and stereo audio out through the headphone jack to mine, and I just ordered new caps to replace the old ones. The set doesn't allow HSIZ and HPOS adjustment through the service menu, so I'd love to see how you handle it!

    The catch is that it's too tiny and impractical for gaming. I got one of these from a recycling center a few years back for $10. It was a nice novelty but eventually traded it to a friend. Unlike a handheld, you can't comfortably sit + bring your face close enough to where it makes sense to play on it for a prolonged period of time. You're either too far for the tiny screen or you're sitting in an awkward position. I always see people posting pics online of games at the title screen of these tiny PVMs, but not actual images and video of full gameplay. No one really plays on these things for long. It's both weird and a shame they've gotten so pricey given how useless they are.

    • @_SixthDay_
      @_SixthDay_ Před 2 lety +1

    Not powering on with the knobs turned all the way down means the tube isn't striking. It needs the slightest tweak of the screen pot. I've got a D series I'm working on where I've caused this fault a few times because there's not enough adjustment to get the screen brightness and sub bright (I guess G1 and G2 technically) balanced enough to have a good balance between black and white. If I adjust the screen pot so blacks are black and sub bright so whites are white, it looks great, but it won't power on the next day because the screen pot is too low. So I've got to have the screen pot a little higher than that so blacks are kinda gray, which is a bit of a bummer.
