- I was planning on needing to possibly replace many parts on this PVM, oh well. This is a Sony PVM 8042Q CRT Trinitron Monitor that I purchased off of eBay. The seller accepted my best offer of $61 shipped for this PVM. It was advertised as not-working.

Thanks for watching!
I'm sure alot of people don't realize that this type of pvm is passive and needs an active signal to show any life. So it's understandable that someone that might not know to much about this type of monitor would confuse it for being possibly broke.
Here cuz I found one in somewhat beat up condition at work as trash and got to take it home for free & video and audio works fine! I was so excited to see it work & always wanted to own a CRT TV!
Love the channel and the passion along with the knowledge of fixing and repairing these amazing professional video monitors.
You haven’t lived until you’ve seen the picture quality on one of these bad boys. 📺
Thank you
Ahh I was wondering who beat me on that one. Good snag steve!
What a steal.
This week I got a working 14M2E for 58 Euro/Dollar from an auction site (not eBay). No information about the technical condition, but luckily it was working fine, only the metal case was a bit beaten up (straightened it with a wooden hammer). I got a pretty nice picture after following some of your guides, thanks!
I’m pretty sure I got my jvc pvm from they same seller, bc they packaged it the same and had extremely fast shipping! Really glad to see this thing come to life! Great video!
Nice purchase, always a good feeling to get a good deal one something that is in great condition.
Doing the Lord's work. Well done and great find!
Kudos on the find. Save the CRT’s!
I went to an E-Waste center that was doing some sales to be able to pay for rent and me and my friend walked out with 2 8045q and 2 8041q for $40 a piece! All of them work although my 8041q has a lopsided screen due to some crack on the corner, it also makes some of the buttons like the RGB comp and blue only to not function properly
Great pickup steve. I still got to with you about a recap kit for my 14M4U.
I'm jelly. That's a great find!
Wow. You are so lucky!
Outstanding. Thank you for sharing!!
That looks like a perfect size for filming gigs
I bought three of those a few years ago for about $40/each shipped. Somehow they all made it to me safely. Now what do I do with them :D
That's a great deal. I'm always hunting for little ones now.
@@RetroTechUSA why do you like the little ones?
@@gigatywing3483 I've bought a little Sony pvm 6041 and it sits on my side table with a ps2 slim connected to it. I love it.
Sell them on eBay for a ridiculous 200+ price tag.
Awesome find! Are you planning on doing a restoration video on that white 9in trinitron in the back? I recently picked up the black version of it and it has similar screen issues to yours on the horizontal edges. I added s-video and stereo audio out through the headphone jack to mine, and I just ordered new caps to replace the old ones. The set doesn't allow HSIZ and HPOS adjustment through the service menu, so I'd love to see how you handle it!
wich rgb wire needs to connect directly snes or sega?Ebay link please i beg you
I had no such luck with a 1443MD, although it was only $17.
Why would the seller put spray foam in a cardboard box?
he used expansion foam and a bag, thats very clever shipping
Sorry Steve, but those good looking Neo Geo Pocket units that you have in the top corner stole the show for me bro. A superb choice for sure. 8^)
Anthony..
Awesome find.
That was a great pick up!
Blessed Find.
The catch is that it's too tiny and impractical for gaming. I got one of these from a recycling center a few years back for $10. It was a nice novelty but eventually traded it to a friend. Unlike a handheld, you can't comfortably sit + bring your face close enough to where it makes sense to play on it for a prolonged period of time. You're either too far for the tiny screen or you're sitting in an awkward position. I always see people posting pics online of games at the title screen of these tiny PVMs, but not actual images and video of full gameplay. No one really plays on these things for long. It's both weird and a shame they've gotten so pricey given how useless they are.
Yeah I don’t get it either and these things sell fast everyday for hundreds. I bought a 13” JVC for cheap and I can’t see gaming on anything lower than that.
@@_SixthDay_ Among other larger CRTs, I have a couple of 13" monitors (Sony PVM, JVC) and they're the perfect "bedroom CRT." That's the size I recommend for anyone who wants one but has limited space. Both cozy and practical for actual gameplay sessions.
I quite like my 8" pvm for playing sega genesis games at my work desk. It's silly but since I'm so close to the screen it isnt bad at all, and it actually fits on my desk without overtaking it.
Personally the size is perfect for me. Doesn’t take much space on a desk while being just big enough to not give me eye fatigue.
How would you go about fixing a PVM? I have a similar small monitor like that I got off FBM, but when I turn it on the screen doesn't turn on. The one time it did, it was just a single horizontal line that disappeared about a couple of seconds. Any advice?
Nice catch !
Can anything be done about the 15kHz flyback whine on these small PVMs? I have a 9041QM with a painfully loud whine, I've read some people claim to have reduced the 15kHz noise by recapping power and deflection boards, wonder if this is true in your experience?
Those are the best kind of sellers :)
Do you have a video tutorial on how to adjust settings on a bvm 20f1u etc if they have all been messed up please?
How can i enter service menu on this model 9042QM ? Ant chance to guide how to adjust R G B holes?
this model is my dream
Why is it your dream model?
@@gigatywing3483 because is portable, and old games looks gorgeous on small crt screens, this model is beautiful
Where would I get bnc connectors to hook up the GameCube?
I love the channel! I wonder if you can advise me on how to approach repairing my 1354q.
I recommend dropping a month or two on his Patreon and he should respond to your message quicker there x
@@christopherbragg6643 Oh I didn't know he had it. Great idea!
@@juliosnap I stayed for a few months and had a nice little chat here and there with him :)
Hey! I also have one of these with a bent little front handle. Do you have a guide for how I can fix it?
I've changed all electrolit capacitors on power supply and all from 50v on main board plus few capacitors 16V 25v (not all) but in impulse power board one IC 115v still exploding, second IC still burnt and shorting between 1 and 2 pins together with biggest transistor burn on main board.. If biggest transistor removed 115v on collector is it coming , but if transistor im sodering in to a board this details burning. maybe some idea to help sony pvm 20m4e (europe)
Moisture caused the foam to adhere to the porosity of the carboard, amusing!
Hello, can you please tell me this 9042QM and 14M2E, which is better? Thank you.
I have a question that you can clarify for me. I recently bought a pvm, however I noticed that the projection light is dimmer than that of a CRT tv. Is this really real or is the model I picked up in question with some kind of defect ?
actual i have a question how hard is it to find replacement cosmetic parts for pvms ive been looking at a PVM20N1U that cosmeticly is kinda beat up but other then that it look to be in decent shape
Is that expandable foam a good way to ship crts?
WOW.... just wow...
Not powering on with the knobs turned all the way down means the tube isn't striking. It needs the slightest tweak of the screen pot. I've got a D series I'm working on where I've caused this fault a few times because there's not enough adjustment to get the screen brightness and sub bright (I guess G1 and G2 technically) balanced enough to have a good balance between black and white. If I adjust the screen pot so blacks are black and sub bright so whites are white, it looks great, but it won't power on the next day because the screen pot is too low. So I've got to have the screen pot a little higher than that so blacks are kinda gray, which is a bit of a bummer.
Lol after shipping they made about $30
love it
I wanna buy one and hook it up to my laptop.. (MacBook) is that possible to your knowledge?
$61 ? I got a 19 inch PVM TV for $2. The seller didn't knew how to turn it on lol
You’re an outlier most people know these PVMs value are charge a lot for them. $61 is a good deal considering eBay is now flooded with this model for almost $300+ these days
I had bad luck with pvm so far. I have apparently shot my 14m4 by applying a too high frequency video signal.. in the beginning it worked, and then made a strange noise, and now i can t sync to any video signal anymore. In the meantime i got a 14m2, but unfortunatly tube got smashed during transport!! Does anybody know if i can simply put the 14m4 tube in the 14m2 chassis ? One is trinitron hr , the other trinitron... thanks crt lovers

how is it even possible to ship and pay ebay/paypal fees for this and not lose money at that price.
Nice

Nice find. I'll trade you my Sony PVM 2030 for your PVM. I don't have the space for this huge thing. 😅
Ha, I'd for sure make that trade.
I don't have the time and lack the skill to clean the 2030. It definitely works using s-video I don't have the cables to test for RGB. I want something smaller that outputs RGB and that's been cleaned and serviced. The only catch is that I live in eastern Ontario Canada and the shipping would be a lot.

Hey man, what kind of power supply do you use on them?
Dunno if you still need an answer but I got one of these today. It’s a 10A 125V
What is the point of such a tiny monitor?
They don't take up a lot of space and can easily be stowed away if you only game rarely like me. Plus they look kinda cute. I like them.
I like 19-20 inch CRT monitors the best. Small enough to move around and store in smallish spaces. Perfect for close viewing on a desk. Screen is big enough to enjoy games without squinting to see the details onscreen.
Unless you want to use them as a test monitor, the 8” are a waste of time. 14” and up is the way to go.
Well that was an easy fix lmao
这只能收藏 画面再好也无法弥补屏幕太小的缺点,屏幕小玩游戏场景就看起来很受限
