  • Its not often that I get guests to come and judge/criticise my plants, but this occasion seems befitting. A lot of my ferns thrived in my previous home but died back a lot when I moved into this new home.
    We tour my fern collection, and Wina gets to share with us her insights on these species, as well as the right care for them. You will discover many varieties of fern in this episode, as well as advanced care tips on them!

    Two awesome episodes Sean! Please do go and propagate with her~er… propagate ferns with her~that’s better! Would love to see her collection and get more advice. Ferns are one of my favorites to grow. I unfortunately struggle with low humidity in the Northern US in the winter time, but am learning to use grow boxes. Please let her know that the videos where very enjoyable and we appreciate her advice.

    Hi Sean, I suspect ferns do much better in Terra Cotta Pots (like your Rabbits Foot) ... & I'm sure Angioptesis evecta would definitely be happier in Terra Cotta + Soil, where the roots would have space to spread out & and breathe rather than being soaked in water. Especially as the King Fern should grow HUGE!
    Many thanks for these two fern videos too! Much enjoyed them 🥰🤩😍

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  Před rokem

      As long as they are watered frequently they should do well in pots. Agree that the airflow from terracotta will be better for them since they are epiphytes, though keeping up with watering would be a bit of a challenge.

    I alsoadore ferns but have tried three times at a tiger fern and each time, the seller sent a caterpillar with it=no tiger fern. I have a crocodile but my macho fern has been one of my favorites.However, this past summer, it began to suffer. I pruned it back and now only have fronds where the rizome crawld.It looks sad. Is there any way of fixing this and getting it to grow infull?

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  Před rokem

      In good condition it should sprout new fronds. Give it good care and time. Ferns are quite resilient actually.

    Hi Sean/Wina, what's a good potting mix for Microsorum Thailandicum? Thanks!

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  Před rokem +1

      Im not sure if Wina is reading this but Ill jump in… the substrate depends on how often you are willing to water it. To replicate its natural habitat something chunky like an aroid mix thats heavy in bark and coco chips might be good. But this will require very frequent watering. I grow mine in my general potting mix and water it lightly with spray everyday. I have overwatered them before so Im careful when watering these. But we dont wanna let it dry out too much either.

      @@onlyplants great. Thanks! Mine is in a general potting mix and want to change to an Aroid mix, but not sure if that's suitable. Ya, watering this is also a hit and miss for me, but definitely can't let it dry out too much. Thanks Sean 😊

      @@dorothymcintosh-sims597 no, but delivery can be. I don't think your *opinion* was too rude, but I still disagree. I think she was really informative about whether ferns were epiphytes or terrestrial, whether each species needed high or medium light, or a lot of water of humidity, as well as giving troubleshooting advice for the ferns that weren't in the best shape. I like the advice she gave, it was very catered to each specific plant unlike other fern care guides out there where they like to give general advice towards ferns of different species and families

      you seem to be mistaking her efforts to be accommodating to english-speakers as an uncertainty or weakness in her knowledge. and in doing so, you seem thoroughly unaware of the kindness being done for you here by a person who could just as well have forgone this in favor of her native language and left you to read subtitles instead. i really hope this is not the case, and you simply had a hard time understanding the contents of the video.
