I am very disappointed with the SABC for not showing the full video of what happened. This seal pup was provoked and taunted. Sand kicked at it. People surrounding it. I'm sure that seal felt threatened and needed to protect itself. Why cant people leave the wildlife alone.

Seals do not attack randomly, they are not aggressive by nature. Investigation should be launched, Typically a stupid person is to blame, someone must of provoked it or harmed it. That is a fact. People are the cause of 90% of all the problems in the world.

I was bitten/nibbed on the leg by a seal at the harbour at Kalkbay two weeks ago. It was just a topical skin scratch but she was overwhelmed. She (seal) was obviously disturbed by the presence of so many tourists around her and urge people to keep their distance. These are still wild animals.

Due to mismanagement of the sea resources there is less fish for seals to eat and the seal population has rocketed to more than 2 million on the coast. Human activity such as housing on beach fronts has taken away natural seal breading spots. Now massive pods of seals are breeding out at sea ! In Namibia they have proper management programmes for seals.

People need to contact the Hout Bay Seal Rescue Centre when they see a Seal that looks to be in trouble, so they can get the Animal away from the situation and either release it safely in a quieter location or start the rehabilitation process.
On Wednesday I was fortunate to catch a few waves with a Seal at Lagoon Beach in Cape Town. However I have a concern as to how conscious we are as people, on keeping oceans clean. It's unbelievable what's being washed up on the beach. From nuppies, electronics, car components, brands packaging etc. Who is to blame really of their living conditions, "Brain Swelling". They are just as frustrated of their environment thats being crash based on our uncontrol behavior

There have been a number of other attacks by seals on this beach and several other beaches. The reason for this out-of-character behaviour is because they have been suffering severe brain damage caused by eating fish laced with toxic algae
It's not a seal attack it's a human attack because we are visitors on their turf and animals have every right to be where ever they want and needs to be treated with respect and see how people actually treat these poor animals.
