  • Rotax 912 gearbox installation, but not all goes according to plan 😖🙄🛩
REBUILD PARTS UPDATE: The parts are on the Way - the ship has sailed! 😆
    Come join the CrayonBox ride.
Have you been enjoying my fIying adventure videos?
Maybe you'd consider buying me a coffee and giving me support at www.paypal.me/...
Flying, cameras and production time are all costly and a little will go a long way to help. Thank you.
By the way - I choose to fly a P&M QuikR Explorer Rotax 912ULS with 11m strutted wing. They are way too much fun!
    Buckle Up! Let's go.

Hi Stuart. You will need a left hand thread torque wrench. Most torque wrenches only click one way!! I would say you've over torqued it.

On top of that the cheater bar changes the torque value, you should only ever use a torque wrench applying pressure in the centre of the handle. I used to calibrate torque-wrenches for work and it was evident that your hand position could make a torque wrench pass or fail calibration to aviation standards.
As expensive as they are, Snapon torque wrenches will torque accurately in both directions! The specs are something like within 4% LH thread and 3% RH thread. its been a few years since I have calibrated a torque wrench though!!

Unfortunately - I had to find out the hard way. But the dramas aren't over yet... more shortly.

I don't think that torque wrench will click in left hand operation (I might be wrong but most mechanical torque wrenches on measure torque in right hand mode unless they have the square drive you push through, it depends on make though, so I might be wrong about yours). You could measure the length of your breaker bar and then use a scale and convert the 200N to Kg, and work out the load needed to give the right torque. Just a thought.

It’s a pain, been there you will sort it no problem see if you can Hire a talk wrench that’s a 3/4 drive with out the adapter it’ll be less strain on the crank all the best Martin

  • @atlantasportflyingllc5541

Sorry it did not work out we all make mistakes - when I torque a nut or set of nuts I normally set it at a low torque first to ensure it 'clicks' - might then have caught does not work on left hand thread.

I know this now, another case of we dont know what we dont know. The amount of checking and rechecking I did to install that nut, and no clue I was going have this problem. What I was really concerned about was getting the nut on with washer centered before locktite setup.

that was going to be my suggestion too, I am a Harley mechanic, and 200 Nm converts to 147 Ft. lbs, thats alot of torque, I always start at half that and than do it in about 3 steps up to the final torque.

What a pity it didn't work out. I hope it wasn't an expensive torque wrench. Hope your shoulder is getting better. I hope you didn't hurt yourself again.

Cheap 1/2” drive torque wrenches don’t usually click on left handed threads reliably. It looked like you tightened to way over 200Nm there…? Maybe it’s screwed the dished thrust washer up now?…

      @CrayonboxAviationAdventures  Před 2 lety +1

Washer was ok, because they are designed to be flattened down. Yes agree about the 'cheap' torque wrench, but all the research before the installation did not give me that information. Live and learn hey. Making the mistakes so you don't have to 🙄😉 Wait the the next attempt/s!

maybe use 1/4 torque wrench to move that 41mm socket ? and gas pipe ?
    LOL

Just leave it, it's plenty tight now.

I thought about doing that, but the washer wasnt correctly centered anyway, and my ocd told me to do it properly and can be seen in the following episode.

If you are using a cheater bar on a torque wrench you should put down all your tools and cancel your CZcams channel
