  • This video (made with the program Gaia Sky) shows a side-by-side comparison between those stars in Gais's first star catalogue (publised on September 16, 2016) for which parallaxes (distances) and stellar motions were available (TGAS sub catalogue) and Gaia's second star catalogue (published on April 25, 2018).
Both datasets have been constructed with the same rule: 50% relative parallax error for bright stars (brighter than 13th magnitude) and 12.5% for fainter stars.
The TGAS sample with this selection contains 1.4 M stars , while Gaia Data Release 2 contains 96.9 M stars. The camera path starts close to the Sun and moves away steadily until it exits the Milky Way, providing a global view of the catalog.
