    Totally correct in your method, I'm a decorator and always use this method for vinyl paper... warm water helps in the sprayer with a little fairy liquid to help the water stick to the backing paper... the Paper Tiger is an excellent device for non vinyl or woodchip... as it perforates the Paper thus letting the water in behind it... the key to that job is soak... soak... make a cup of tea... soak, soak, make another cup of tea, soak some more stare at the walls... soak and then strip with a sharp scraper... nice job. Hi Burton Outdoors. I’ve used that tool and I extensively score the vinyl wall paper followed by spraying hot water from an electric or manual sprayer. After say 1-15 mins, by and large I can remove all the wall paper by and large in one go. The scoring does not perforate the job. Then I gently scrape the reside glue off the wall.
      Cheers.

    You are the first very intelligent person I have come in contact with in years of doing business at a high level, who knows how to use common sense. Give yourself a big pat-on-the-back. You my friend are truly a rare individual. Vinyl is the way to go, in the past I have used the old paper wall paper. It’s a real struggle to scrape, or steam it off the wall. Excellent video and very informative.

    I am stripping a room with vinyl wallpaper at the moment. I have found the steamer is good for softening the vinyl so I can peel it off the backing more easily. Then I was using a damp sponge to wet out the paper and a quick rub over with the steamer to make sure I have wetted it all out completely. The backing then just about falls off with very little scraping required. Having seen your work, I am going to get a pressure spray bottle out the shed now and use that instead of the sponge. Thanks for the tip !

    Steamers work really well in my experience, but with that being said your system looks like it’s working out really well. No need to reinvent the wheel if that’s working. If you do come to sections where the glue is being a pain, the steamer will heat it up and allow you to take it off a lot easier. Just don’t steam it and then let the glue dry again. Major pain in the ass! Good luck with your projects on the new house! Congratulations as well

    @jasonthorogood Před 5 lety +3

    Only problem with a steamer is it will heat the plaster too much and bubble up which is a huge problem unless you move quickly so avoid that.. Or just use hot water in a spray bottle will soak in faster.. That's my advice based on years of messing it up

  • @BenjaminEmm
    @BenjaminEmm Před 5 lety +1

    I've only ever used a steamer, but in my experience when using one the entire process (after giving the wall a good steaming) is like you show at the end, the whole lot just pulls of or scrapes off extremely fast.

    I wonder if you could use a humidefier while you work to keep things moist...or maybe that would just cause mold? I suppose if you didn't leave it on for a long time and maybe toweled down the walls afterwards it would be okay. Looks like you've got your work cut out for you, but that gold wall paper had to go. I look forward to seeing the end result!

  • @MartinPHellwig

    Puncturing is only necessary when you have multiple layers of wallpaper and/or painted over wallpaper. I use an insect spray bottle (the one you can fill and pressurise) to soak the wall twice before I even attempt to get it off, most of the time the wall paper falls off by itself.

    A steamer makes it much easier. It's more satisfying too as your using it to pull the wallpaper off without it tearing. It leaves the walls nice and clean and you end up with rolls of paper, so easier to tidy up. Let the steam soak the paper and move it across then down as you peel... I start from the top and work downwards. Give it a go.

    Are you re-papering or painting? My hubby is a professional decorator and always hangs lining paper first for plain painted walls as it's more forgiving for the patched areas and uneven surfaces in the plaster.

    Oh and try not to use a steamer!! Especially on old houses with iffy plaster as it can "blow" the plaster and you will end up in a big mess possibly needing a plasterer or a DIY patch job.

    Also suggest a long reach wide blade scraper. Toolstation etc.

    Steamer but make sure you get one with a separate boiler and, hose and plate, not an all in one doohickey. Argos used to do one for next to nothing - going back a bit now. Steam with one hand, strip with the other, very fast. (PS open windows)

    Using a steamer can be extremely messy and worst of all, can soften and damage plasterwork or plasterboard underneath. Care is required.

  • @r1273m
    @r1273m Před 5 lety

    Over the last half century I've used all methods. I still prefer a bucket of warm water with a drop of Fairy in it and apply with a car sponge. Steamers are OK in theory, I have used them on old stubborn paper but you have to be very careful they don't boil dry. They are really just an electric kettle and when they do boil dry they don't cut out and of course these days you cannot get a replacement element...….! No doubt 'elf 'n' safety. Best to lift the carpets first if you are throwing them or cover the floor with newspaper to make collecting up easier.

  • @SimonLeeds
    @SimonLeeds Před 5 lety

    A steamer isn’t necessary. It can be easier if someone’s used loads of glue, but I’ve found just dousing the wall like you have with water that it’ll peel off just as easy. The steamer you have to hold in place for a bit and it gets messy turning the wallpaper paste back into a sticky mess.

    • @johnmartin7158
      @johnmartin7158 Před 23 dny

      Agree and the steamer is time consuming. But for real stubborn patches or walls I can imagine it would be good.

  • @akitorose7771
    @akitorose7771 Před 5 lety

    Steamer makes a mess, lot of water drips down so you need to protect the floor...but great if trying to remove really stubborn wallpaper. I personally hate wallpaper and choose to have painted walls...much easier if you fancy a change of colour too.

    I'm a decorator
    Peel vinyl front as you did
    Then use steamer for backing paper for two reasons
    1 the steam in the room will be absorbed into the whole of the room's backing paper as you working making the job easier as you go
    2 the steamer will also remove a lot more of the old wallpaper paste, which will all have to be removed, if you're planning on painting the walls
    to avoid crazing and ruining your new paint finish
    Best of luck
    Chris
