  • Two of the first electric (battery powered) watches on the planet from the early 1960's using electronic technology established in the late 1950's that predates anything quartz. At the time it was pretty complex stuff that represents the best of early space-age technology.
The Hamilton 505 Electric on the left uses a principle of physics that when the current is passed through a wire placed in a magnetic field, a torque is placed on that wire and thus drives the balance wheel.
The Bulova Accutron 214 'Spaceview' on the right uses a principle where an electric signal is transformed by a transistor and activates an electromagnetic coil that puts a metal tuning fork into vibration. This vibration is then transferred by means of a tiny wire called index finger onto an ordinary mechanical gear train.

The continuous movement of the second hand on the Bulova is mesmerizing: a true sweep second hand only matched by the Seiko Spring Drive.

Vot63 sorry , but last generation citizen cosmotron runs 42000 bph ,higher than bulova

Sorry shahin sha, but the Bulova "beats" nearly 31 times faster than the Cosmotron. The Cosmotron's 42,000 BPH is only 12 beats per second. The Bulova 214 does 360 beats per second or 1,296,000 BPH.
I realize this is an old post, but let's be accurate and keep things in the proper perspective here.

@MrChuckbass92 The Hamilton 500 and 505 were the world's first electric watches, first introduced in 1957 (model 500), and as such are indeed powered by electricity (a battery), so well before the introduction of quartz watches in the 1970s.

I have it here in my hand. The movement inside is marked "Hamilton 505", "Patented" and "U.S.A.". Moreover, the distinctive slight swing of the seconds hand visible in the video is typical of the 505's moving coil balance. How can it not be a 505?

Not a 505 ......ESA 9154 with battery cap removed.......nice try. 505's did not have transistors......they relied on contacts on the balance wheel grounded negative to post balance was a half circle with crescent wings and crossbars holding the coil primary using a trip wire to break electrical contact on the secondary.
