I was quite excited about DreamWorks' Ruby Gillman Teenage Kraken! A twist on the normal formula spitting at Disney for their mermaid protagonists. But then.. I barely got around to seeing it. And then when I did, my expectations fell of the more and more I watched this movie. Until I reached the end strikingly quick, and it was practically Disney in every way. Ruby Gillman has flopped in the box office, and I think I know why. And though the concept of this movie had some good elements to it, the end result was boring, and bland, and uninspired. So here's an off-shoot idea on How To Fix DreamWorks' Uninspired Ruby Gillman... But it still doesn't help much.

I think that instead of Chelsea turning out to be Nerissa, Nerissa should've actually been her mom, and Chelsea wanted Ruby's help to get the Tritent to prove that Mermaids and Krakens could get along. Nerissa steals it once Ruby gets it, goes on that rampage in the climax and tries to force Chelsea to join in So Chelsea realizes her mom can't change and help stop her. It would've been more entertaining, nuanced, and would've been a nice contrast to Agatha genuinely caring about and coming to an understanding with Ruby.

It’s funny how so many flaws with this film story can be fix by just having the mermaid not turn out to be actually evil but no we gotta stick to Disney, and make the redheaded mermaid, super evil in the end no matter if our films story suffers because of it

I haven't watched the movie or the video but judging from your comment it's really funny that people were praising puss in boots 2 for having a villain that is just evil. No sympathetic, no twist villain. Just straight up evil. But this movie (again based on your comment) proves that any type of villain can be good as long as the writer knows exactly what they are doing and knows how to write. We don't need more villains that are evil for the shake of evil. We need different types of villains with good writing. Hell, it's not even the villain themselves, it applies to every character.
The same can be said to the spiderverse style. Yes, that first spiderverse movie really changed the whole animation industry in a good way and I do love seeing more and more unique animated movies, but people need to realize that the reason why 3d animation, specifically realistic 3d Pixar animation, is getting stale is because a lot of movies are using the same style over and over again instead of experimenting. We need a variety, not the same thing over and over again.

    • @scoutfan911

@gdottothegamer1001 Jack Horner works because he's evil the entire time, not in the last 15 minutes, and there's other villains to add depth in his place. Also he's absolutely hilarious, Nerissa is a charisma vacuum. Chelsea here does a total 180° personality swap like Hans and becomes evil in the last 15 minutes with no prior indication of her being pure evil.

Exactly. People have been saying that Chelsea is somehow this good villain because she seems manipulative in reality she’s just a really lame twist, villain like Hans from frozen. Her dynamic and friendship with Ruby from saving her life to helping Ruby come out of her shell was much more meaningful and much more impactful for the film than anything any other character did. The executives it seems just wanted to spite the little mermaid so much that they didn’t care how bad it made their movie look

Nerissa (Chelsea) witnessing the violent death of her grandma being stabbed by her own trident, vowed to someday continue her grandma's plan to eliminate the kraken. Especially planning to kill Ruby's grandma with the same trident she used to kill her grandma after realizing what Ruby's family was.

Barbie's princess charm school. it got that the MC is actually a secret royal succesor trope and tries to get the throne from the corrupt evil villain too. But the thing that makes the charm school plot is even more interesting, is one, Delancy's / the villain's unexpected redemption midway that makes it clear WHO IS the real villain the entire time and two, they involved the MC'S FRIENDS, LIKE, they were relevant there! super duper relevant, the plot and mission won't move forward if the MC's friends didn't help her. I was shocked that Ruby's diverse friend group is only there to show that Ruby is a shitty friend who ditches her bestfriend for a new friend. Scrap the characters and the plot still moving nicely with Ruby and Chelsea as the main focus. Like, it's too much unnecessary characters and so little world building to explain Ruby's daily life and her struggle. Or that is what I'm thinking.

But even so they still could under perform but that's the risk original IPs take to potentially wow an audience.

The Bad Guys actually performed quite well and that was an original (albeit based on a book series).
Made $250 million off a $80 million budget.
Elemental, also an original made a huge comeback (made $425 million off a $200 million budget) so yes originality isn’t dead.
But that’s how the most popular franchises we know started, as originals.
And recent films based on preexisting franchises did disappointing at the box office, such as Flash (made $268 million off a $220 million budget) Indy 5 (made $369 million off a $300 million budget) and even Rise of the Beasts (made $433 million off a $200 million budget, did the best out of the three I listed though it did gross the least amount of money in the series)

Why can’t we just get a scene where the war between the Kraken and the mermaid started and Narissa’s backstory And the few between grandmama and Agatha. Make Ruby a better character like Shulk(Xenoblade) and Invincible! Chelsea would’ve been better off as a friend Ruby and mNarissa could’ve just been the main villain!

I know I've said this before, but I'll say it again--Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken is a 3D animated kids movie that's completely full of wasted potential. It has a mediocre and generic plot with a highly obnoxious and predictable main female villain in the form of Chelsea Van Der Zee/Queen Nerissa who's just nothing more and nothing less than a cheap knockoff of Ariel from The Little Mermaid. Chelsea is without a doubt the worst main villain in Dreamworks history. Plus, when Chelsea transforms into her giant monster mermaid form, she looks more like a Siren than a mermaid. In fact, it would've made a lot more sense if the krakens were at war against the SIRENS instead of the mermaids. And making mermaids evil just for the sake of the plot is not only ridiculous but it's also just bad, lazy writing altogether. Besides, Disney already tried the whole "narcissistic mermaids" cliche with the Neverland mermaids in Peter Pan 1 & 2 alongside the Disney Fairies book series, which just makes this said cliche dull and boring all over again.
Not to mention the fact that Ruby's grandma, The Queen of the Seven Seas, came off as not only vain, controlling, and bloodthirsty but also highly xenophobic towards the other sea monster races and even towards the humans as well. Plus, there's just one question that I really need to ask about the plot of this movie--Why can't the krakens just learn to get along and live together in harmony with the mermaids and all the other mythical sea creatures? I mean, they all inhabit all the same exact seven seas and I'm pretty sure that not all mermaids and other mythical sea monsters are evil. And who's to say that there aren't any evil krakens lurking in the depths of the ocean right now.
Plus, the only two things that were actually good about this movie were the animation (except for the designs of the human characters) and how much of a relatable main protagonist Ruby Gillman was in the film.
This whole entire movie is just nothing but a lazy, cheap knockoff of Turning Red meets The Little Mermaid 2 with a hint of Luca, Encanto, Raya and the Last Dragon, and The Incredibles 1 & 2--that's it.
And but like I've also said before, this is what happens when you make an animated movie for kids with only a $70 million budget with very poor marketing. Not to mention the fact that the Writers' Strike in LA is still going right now.
In conclusion, that's the reason why I gave Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken a 4.5/10 with a three-star rating and a solid C-.

It would have been better if the trident was evil, that needed contact to trigger, when kraken girl grabbed it, triggers evil, mermaid pried it free and the evil manifests into a mermaid kraken hybrid, where kraken and mermaid have to come together to defeat it and defend the bay. Which can help to strengthen the friendship, that can lead to an opportunity where they both run away from this, but that leads to more disaster. The parents have to work together to stall the evil, the teens have to train, and it takes the effort of both krakens and mermaids to stop it. Then a bit of a twist, both mermaid and kraken teen loose a parent during the fight, and try harder.
Happy ending, mermaid and kraken become friends, the family clans unite to become the defenders of the bay.

The film had a nice set up with really good ideas. Especially with the grandmother needlessly wanting to fight for no greater purpose but to fight. Could have been a much more interesting subversion if that was actually glared on alongside the mermaids NOT being completely evil.

I don’t normally comment on videos like this (I’m gonna be honest - it’s mostly because I try to avoid them), and I’m pretty late to have my say, but I wanted to share my own view on this story, so here it is. Be prepared - it’s SUPER long. Forgive my infodumping.
Chelsea does actually rescue Connor upon her arrival into Oceanside, and Ruby doesn’t see the signs of herself being a kraken until their first interaction - and even then, Chelsea shows genuine concern for her, as if she didn’t know about one important fact in this matter.
After this incident, Ruby runs home and shows her mother what’s happened, but even when Agatha is able to comfort her, she still brushes it off as ‘a normal part of life for us’, reiterating her number-one rule while she’s at it. But Ruby sneaks out that night and discovers her true form in the depths of the ocean, meeting her Grandmammah and getting info on the battle of the Trident - which started when four malicious mermaids called the Sirens (that’s the ones in the statue in the palace - they sure did look like the main villains in the movie’s first poster) tried to steal it, only to be stopped by her ancestors and killed in the battle which took place. Since then, some other mermaids have tried to finish what they started, which led to the krakens fighting a forever battle against them to keep the seas safe.
After some training, Ruby is about to head home but is captured by Gordon - before being rescued by Chelsea, revealing herself at that moment. The story runs pretty normally from there (except that the forest scene in the second trailer takes place on Ruby’s way to school the next morning, as is the library scene during later on in the day; Ruby’s interaction with her friends and her exploration with Chelsea takes place around recess), but when push comes to shove and Chelsea eventually betrays Ruby, the twist in the official iteration of her being Nerissa is not mentioned at all there; so essentially, Chelsea is her own person.
Grandmammah is visited by Agatha for help when she notices her daughter’s disappearance, while after a long struggle, Ruby eventually breaks out on her own and confronts Chelsea in a duel just outside prom. However, the crowd is too caught up in the fight to interfere, and Grandmammah and Agatha don’t arrive at the scene on time, leaving Ruby to be eventually cornered by Chelsea, moments away from being delivered the final blow.
Just before Chelsea can finish her off, however, there’s a huge crash of thunder and some other mermaids arrive - it’s the Sirens, alive, having come to collect the Trident from her! When they take their prize, though, things become slightly clearer when Chelsea asks them where her money is. But the Sirens just laugh at her, telling her that they were never planning to pay up - only using her as a pawn. They run away with the Trident, leaving a huge commotion in the scene, overwhelming Ruby and causing her to flee in a panic attack. Just before Grandmammah can confront Chelsea, she finds that she’s gone as well.
Ruby’s anxiety takes her to a desolate island at a distance from the bay, and she’s laid on the ground in a scared, shivering mess (yes, I did take inspiration for this idea from Puss in Boots). But someone’s voice calls out to Ruby, grounding her - and her view reorients to find Chelsea in front of her. At first, Ruby’s expecting another attack, but the mermaid has no plans of revenge. At this point, Chelsea begins to explain everything, starting off by saying: “Apologies are so overrated… so I won’t even bother trying to make one.”
She tells Ruby all the details of what led them here: the pressures of her princesshood as the daughter of the surprisingly benevolent Queen Nerissa, their argument not too long ago, and her meeting with the Sirens (who, after narrowly evading their death, had been in hiding all this time, and the mermaids which tried to steal the Trident after their fight were nothing more than the Sirens’ decoys to trick the krakens into their misconception). It turns out that she made a deal with them - after they gave information about Ruby to her, telling her that the young kraken was a bloodthirsty monster who wanted to stab her friends in the back, she would use her to collect the Trident and do the dirty work for them in exchange for enough funds to run away and start a life of her very own - one where she could actually feel like a normal mermaid and not a freak among her kind.
But there were several things along the way that gave Chelsea some doubts about her deal - for starters, they didn’t tell her that Ruby didn’t know about her true identity, or the fact that she was not as malicious as they led her to believe. And their underwater exploration wasn’t part of the deal in the slightest - Chelsea just wanted to experience true friendship one last time before betraying her - something that she really, *really* didn’t want to do. She finishes by saying that Ruby has every right to hate her right now, but Ruby immediately disregards that, and says that she’s only upset that Chelsea didn’t tell her sooner - if she did, she would’ve done everything in her power to get help. The two friends reconcile over this, finding some common ground and admitting that they were both wrong about each other, and they’re soon found by Ruby’s friends and family, along with Gordon and some other locals of the bay - volunteering to help them defeat the Sirens for good. Chelsea manages to reconcile with her mother, who also volunteers to help alongside some other mermaids.
After preparations for the fight, everyone confronts the empowered Sirens at the same spot where they had fought over the Trident centuries ago - and they all work together to turn the tide, taking the strength of krakens, mermaids and humans to do so. Eventually, Ruby and Chelsea manage to take back the Trident with the help of their friends, and together, they use its power to banish the Sirens from the seven seas (think of it as something along the lines of Tai Lung’s defeat from Kung Fu Panda), putting them somewhere where they can never hurt anyone ever again.
Several months have passed since then, and the Undersea Committee, led by Grandmammah and Nerissa, has been formed to protect the bay - bringing krakens, mermaids and humans together. We then see Ruby, Connor and their friends - including Chelsea, who’s now happily settled into Oceanside - heading on a school trip to another beach area and having fun together. And it ultimately ends with Ruby talking about the importance of expressing your true self to the world, finishing with those words: “No matter what the challenge, we will always answer the call.”

on the indiana jones topic i didnt hear ANYTHING about the movie until after i saw it (partners family offered) and personally thought it was alright, like mid but was honestly surprised at so much hate in reviews, i was just happy that it was better story and cgi than crystal skull which i think is the worst in the lineup 🤣

If they ever decide to make a franchise they shouldn’t give it a sequel yet they should make a tv series and if that does well then they make a sequel and then a season two of the tv show and then whatever comes

This movie is literally just Little Mermaid crossed with Turning Red. And not only is it derivative, but it’s also boring, forgettable, and tedious. Plus, the twist villain sucks. 😒

I liked the depiction and lore of the Kraken in this movie, to the point where it could be it's own fictional race. Though, I do think that it didn't belong in this story. Whatever this movie was trying to do.
idk, what I know is I am definitely stealing this movies ideas for my own stories.

I don’t believe that Universal has any faith in DreamWorks anymore because of This movies’ failure. So possibly one day Universal will shut them down because they won’t need two animation studios just like when Disney shut down Blue Sky

I honestly liked the movie, it's pretty OK, but it surely could had been a lot better.
There's a lot of early storyboards floating around on CZcams that shows that the movie was aiming so much higher, but a lot last minute changes happened.

I am sad that this movie was as boring and predictable as it was. I didn't have high hopes for it, but I thought it had potential and I wanted it to subvert expectations. I would have loved for the mermaid girl to have been genuinely a kind person and actually make the two friends at the end. But nah, gotta make her evil despite there being so many other ways to make a good conflict.

Also, it's okay to say mermaids are the bad guys cause in mythology, in some stories they always were, but to say a kraken is a "good guy/gal" just screams of pretentious gimmick of trying to reverse the norm to be, oh our movie is different. Cause not once in mythology were krakens a good creature.

I really wanted to like this movie but it was so awful. The villain was the worst part of the movie, which is always a recipe for disaster. I would have kept Chelsea as the daughter of Narissa, sent by the mermaid queen to befriend and betray Ruby to steal the trident. But you can see she's conflicted as she kind of likes Ruby. In the end she betrays her mother, not because she's good, but because she wants to be her OWN evil and not do what her mother says, lampshading the whole teenage rebellion thing. She ends up a comically evil frenemy, fighting Ruby because a great, destined, protector of the ocean needs the best villain, which in her egotistical mind, is of course her. Kind of a Doofenschmirtz/Perry relationship except Chelsea is actually competent and threatening.

    • @achinthmurali5207
      @achinthmurali5207 Před 9 měsíci +4

I would have liked that concept. But it could be even better if we had Chelsea try to be her own evil AND convince Ruby to join her. Using the power of the traded to rule over all the oceans as goddesses.

If you're anything like me and watch a bunch of these movie review channels here on CZcams, you know that Hollywood has been struggling with originality for a while, and hardly anything seems genuinely good anymore, aside from the occasional diamond in the rough. I believe it was Schafarillis who said that great movies have become the exception, not the norm for Hollywood, and that is very saddening. As a result, I haven't really bothered with going to theaters anymore. It just seems like a waste of money these days. Even with good movies, I haven't really cared because I can get the general plot from these CZcams reviewers. Sure, it's not the entire thing, but you get the jist of it. Also, I'm an MDD sufferer, so just getting out of the house itself is a tough sell.
