  • In this video we'll take both a large-scale view and a detailed view of one of the most important formal constructs in all of western music: sonata form. We'll be using the 1st movement of Joseph Haydn's Sonata in D Major (no. 37) for piano. TO ENHANCE YOUR EXPERIENCE with this video explanation, download and print the score to have with you.
    Please Note the Following Typo/Error in One of the Slides: The brief key change in measure 59 should be to the key of D, not A as the slide indicates (at around 23:03). The Roman numeral chord symbols indicated there are correct for the key of D.

    thank you, great content. graduated from a "berklee type" of school, this stuff is precious for guys like me who know lots of theory and analysis but nothing about classical music.

    well done! I wish this was available when I took theory in college. This was a refreshing recap

    Hi, measure 59 is in the key of D not A because of all the natural G's. Actually you did analyse in the key of D after all but wrote key of A. Thanks for the analysis!

      You're right - that was a typo/error. I have updated the video description to include the explanation: "Please Note the Following Typo/Error in One of the Slides: The brief key change in measure 59 should be to the key of D, not A as the slide indicates (at around 23:03). The Roman numeral chord symbols indicated there are correct for the key of D."

    on bar 59 it states the retransition is in the key of A, but the analysis states chords fitting in D or I'm just too tired?

    I'm confused.
    Mozart k545 and Clementi Sonatina op 36 no 1 only have an exposition which repeats, then one more section which also repeats. What's going on there?

    • @ScottWatsonMusic
      @ScottWatsonMusic  Před 7 lety +1

      Frode-5, Sorry to get to your question so late....I somehow never saw it until now!
      Anyway, some sonata allegro movements have not only a repeat around the Exposition, but also around the Development-Recapitulation. Sonata allegro form is really an expansion of "Rounded Binary" form, ||:A:||:B-A:||
      You can find many great theoretical analyses of works such as Mozart K545 online, such as here:

      Hope this helps.

    Mucha explicación pero a la hora de tocarla el mismo error, hacer presto lo que está escrito en allegro...que pena.

    Why didnt you number the measures on the staff. Why does no one number the measures, and then *immediately* talk about "so as you can see on measure 17" ...what?! 🤦‍♀️ facepalm

      @@ScottWatsonMusic surprised by something? i dunno why musicians only go halfway on their jobs.

    • @ScottWatsonMusic
      @ScottWatsonMusic  Před 4 lety +1

      You think this is a job...too funny :) Seriously, though, for all the musical examples throughout I used screenshots of public domain PDF music I downloaded from Petrucci Music Library (imslp.org). I guess in retrospect I could have added measure numbers on the image files but that would have been a ton more work on top of what was already a ton of work (a labor of love...not a job) to create this video. Anyway, hopefully the measure number thing doesn't get in the way of this video helping some folks appreciate sonata allegro form.

      @@ScottWatsonMusic Its no wonder formal music education is dying and no one cares about music literacy when musicians themselves can't diagram a 200 year old hit song in rigorous detail. The screenshots of pdf are blurry. The playback should be animated. The harmonic function should be notated and with chord names in each measure. The melodic arcs should be shown. The phrases should be highlighted in real time. The non harmonic notes should be circled or colored. The running tempo should be shown in BPM. The intention and history of the piece should be explained beforehand. At a minimum. With that said this video is still 100x better than the many other videos out there even professionally sold 'classical lesson' videos and Bernstein himself was so lazy without detail in his videos he would simply say "listen to this section" rather than explain in detail. The result speaks for itself, study of music is near dead, classical is near nonexistent, berklee teaches at a kindergarten level skipping straight to jazz, orchestras hanging on a tiny thread of funding by 80-90 yr old artsy seniors for the past decades even much before pandemic. Meanwhile those educated in music are taken as snobs 9 times out of 10 and 'cant be bothered to explain'.

      @@superblondeDotOrg The video is about the Sonata Allegro Form which has modulation built into the format/structure of the piece. Its not a video on music theory concepts and every chord progression, only the modulation and key changes. Including everything that you wanted would make the video probably 5 hours long. I agree with you tho that there needs to be more funding for music education.
