    The big debate (at least in my mind😉) is about the finished look of wax v. nonwax. Some polys leave a plastic look. It would be helpful to see this project (or another, especially on dark paint) held at different angles so to detect that issue via the finished appearance.

    I use wax all the time, the issue people generally don’t know is that wax can take up to 30 days to cure before the final buff out. Poly is more instant in comparison.

    Just a heads up on water based clear coats and steel wool. It's best not to use steel wool as it can very quickly leave rust stains in your finish, especially noticeable on lighter paints and woods.. 180 grit sand paper is preferred or one of the synthetic scrubber pad thingys.

    Thank you for this, I have the General Finishes topcoat, and I have recently painted my stairs as well, and I really wanted to use this, because I heard that it was more durable than wax. I did my kitchen cabinets in Old White and waxed them, and my kids are beating them up. I have to do touch ups frequently, so I wanted to do something more durable this time on the stairs. I wish I would have used the General Finishes on my cabinets, but I'm not going to re-do them just yet. Thank you again, enjoy your videos.

I just finished my first piece (a small side table) and I think it came out ok. I have to admit, I was a bit challenged by the waxing and did go back and re-watch your videos regarding that once I was actually in the process of doing it. Just wanted to let you know that I ended up using this on a big table and chairs and hutch that I redid for my Sweetie for his home. It was painted a dark charcoal chalk paint almost black with a dark stain on the table top and chair seats. I used this over the paint and then A rub on poly over the stain. Oh my gosh it was so much easier and quicker. I actually used the satin finish because I was using a satin finish for the table top and it turned out really nice. Just wanted you to know. The rub on poly is awesome if you ever want/need to use a polyurethane. I ended up doing about 6 coats of poly on the table top because I wanted a thick coat, but it was so much easier than that polyurethane. No bubbles. Also, white wax works awesome is someone wants to have a really TRUE WHITE finish. I've been playing around recently with different waxes and notices a big difference with white wax versus clear wax.

    I wish I had done some research on which top coats to use for Chalk paint. I used Rustoleum chalk paint for my kitchen cabinets. (Some light pink/lavender, light blue and dark purple). I used Rustoleum clear matte top coat to protect them. But after a week or so stains are already showing and when I try to clean it, the finish and paint are rubbing off! Yikes! So my question is, can I touch up w/the chalk paint and put on the General Finishes top coat? So can I now put on the General Finishes on top of the Rustoleum top coat? Or do I have to take the Rustoleum top coat off first before putting on the General Finishes top coat? (I'm hoping I won't have to. One good thing is that I only have done about 7 cabinet doors so I want to make sure I'm doing it right. And since these are kitchen cabinets, I need to have a top coat that won't yellow, or not too much, easy to clean, and durable.) Can I use more of a satin top coat General Finishes instead of flat? Hoping that a satin would provide more protection and easier to clean? But this might affect the color and sheen or look? Thanks.

    • @ChristinaMuscari
      @ChristinaMuscari  Před 6 lety +1

      The top coat has hardeners unlike the chalk paint. It's a topcoat even though it is water based. It will not wipe off after it is cured. Water based sealers takes longer to dry than oil based but are easy to clean up. Brushes used with water based top coats can be cleaned up with soap and water. Oil based ones you have to use a solvent of some kind like mineral spirits. All the topcoats will yellow a little, but I've found that waterbed top coats yellow less than polyurethane. It's always best to check with the manufacturer of the specific paint or topcoat you are working with to see what their recommendations are for the specific product you are working with.

    I think it would have been better if you had compared Annie Sloan wax with Annie Sloan clear lacquer and then done a durability test to show how much more protect the lacquer is compared to the wax by giving the finished surface a few knocks. That would have been really helpful to your viewers. This video just shows the colour comparison.

      I always use coasters, no topcoat is going to be able to withstand repeated warm and wet cups. But that being said the liquid topcoats are more durable than wax.

    I'm going to do a dresser for my daughters birthday, but it's my first chalk painting project. I have no one around me that sells Annie Sloan. Rust-Oleum is the only one sold where I'm at.
    So, I have a couple questions.... 1) Is Rust-Oleum a bad chalk paint to work with? (I'm painting it white, it's brown now)
    2) Should I use the wax or polyuerethane since this will be a dresser being used by a 7 year old?

    • @ChristinaMuscari
      @ChristinaMuscari  Před 6 lety

      I haven’t worked with Rustoleum yet, so I can’t give an opinion on it. You can order Annie Sloan on Amazon or their website. I use wax on all my dressers even in my kid’s rooms.

      Hi Angie. I have only bought and am using Rust-Oleum chalked paint. I am just starting to get into it. I painted a bookcase and a display case both in charcoal gray. The inside of the case I painted linen white. Then I used their clear matte sealer. I did have some bleed through on the white. It wasn’t too bad and being my first project I just left it. I heard you can spray a couple coats of shellac over the bleed through area’s to cover up the spots. I am now doing a coffee table and an old dresser I’m turning into a TV stand. I bought their Dark chalked base and had it mixed into “Tidal Pond” (I believe that’s the name of it). I’m not sure about the top coat. I heard Home Depot sells a paste wax that’s about $10. I think I want to try waxing and then a dark wax over for that special vintage look. I can say I have had no problems with the paint. Not that you can mix to a lot of different colors it’s fun to experiment. I also want to try the DIY brand and I also heard CC Caldwell sells good paints as well. So I give Rust-Oleum a thumbs up.

    Hello there, I just saw your videos, nice work. Thanks. I'm in need of a sewing machine table and my husband decided to make it. Will Annie Sloan old white chalk paint, clear wax, distressed, and dark wax an ideal process for a Sewing machine table that will get a lot of use? Will this process stain my fabrics? Do you recommend anything else? Your opinion/view or thoughts will be highly valued. Thank you very much. Nice work you do.

    • @ChristinaMuscari
      @ChristinaMuscari  Před 6 lety

      It shouldn’t stain your fabrics, but it does take 30 days for the wax to cure completely. So you wouldn’t be able to put your sewing machine on the table until then. Might not be the best option for the job.

      Either would work. I would personally use wax on a sofa table because it will get light use. I prefer wax on light wear items. Don’t set anything on the table for 30 days though to let it cure. That’s the hardest part!
