  • Dance Can Dance “The Spirit of Enchantment is an Afropop-Cinematic musical dance theatre production in collaboration with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra. The show is inspired by Elvis Sibeko’s album Dance Can Dance “The Spirit of Enchantment:” which was released in 2020 during level 5 lockdown to inspire artists to continue with their creative spirit and ignite them to have ideas that will help others during hard times of lockdown. The aim of the show is to bring back the spirit of dance and music both from the creative artists and the audience to experience the greatest world of dance that is told through afro-pop cinematic orchestra music and afro-fusion dance style. The production tells a folktale of a magical African island called Kilombo. An island that becomes alive when is full moon and that happens every seven years. A wizard of the island and the protector who uses his magical power to hide the island from humans every seven years. The production shows the power of cultural diversity through music and dance, inspiring the audience to embrace social cohesion.
    Dance Can Dance “The Spirit of Enchantment” was first staged at Artscape Opera House in May 2021. Three performances were sold out but the last was stopped midway because the roof of Artscape Opera House leaked. The show returned to the Artscape Opera House in September 2021 for three more sold-out performances.
    The show’s twelve acts are songs accompanied by various dance elements from ballet to African and contemporary, with some comedic magic (with dance of course) in between, celebrates the healing power of music and dance.
    Partners in the production are the 14 dancers from Indoni Dance, Arts & Leadership Academy with choreographer Sbonakaliso Ndaba and choreographers Mzokuthula Gasa, Maxwell Rani, Janine Booysens, Tercia Alexander Amsterdam and Elvis Sibeko. Guests include Babalwa Zimbini Makwetu a Fleur Du Cap award winner; traditional Xhosa singer Nomakrestu; the South African Youth Choir; and Mawonga Gayiya, an internationally acclaimed comedic magician
    Elvis Sibeko is the director and music composer of the production. The music is arranged for orchestra by Damian Philander and the conductor of the orchestra is Brandon Phillips. The production is 1h30mins long without an interval. It a breath-taking musical dance theatre with striking visual projections plus modern lighting design and costume that take the audience to a magical glowing world. The entire production is inspired by the movie Avatar the glowing garden that is full of futuristic elements.
