- Was it Worth Renting? I hope you all enjoy what ended up being the final video from our amazing Tokyo trip! The family and I had an amazing time and I am really glad I was able to film it all for you all. In this one I talk about the R34 rental car some more and point out some flaws as well as get it out on the expressway and return it to Omoshiro Rent a Car. Next time I think I want to take out the S2000...What would you guys choose?

Hi Spencer,Looks like I'm a day late and a dollar short on this one. I watched yesterday, but didn't get a chance to reply until now. Looks like you had the right idea. Renting that iconic car for your trip was something you'll never forget. It is a shame about the current state of the car though. In the end, it's just a rental car, but to those of us who love GT-Rs it almost pains us to see one of them so run down. Still you've just had the experience many of us can only dream of. That dark blue R33 at 9:02 is the one for me (maybe it's a rust bucket underneath, but I love that shade of blue). As always, I enjoyed the video sir! I have one question though, who won the race? ;o)

I ended up renting the R33 on the right (at 8:45). great experience.! I originally rented the DC5 Type-R but it broke down the day prior I was to pick it up, so I was able to rent it for the same price as the DC5!!!! and yes, the views are fairly amazing at the expressways. Went to Daikoku parking area that night!!
That FD RX-7 at the very end that you spotted lives in one of the apartment homes walking to to Omoshiro rent a car place. I saw it parked there.

But its strange I didnt see a lot of MR2's running around in the vids. I owned a Gen2 '92 T-top white in the mid to late 90's. I do miss that car an was searching your vid of your Tokyo trip. Only saw 1. Anyhow, yes a S2000 next time!

Next time when you're in Tokyo, use google maps. Much better than the GPS in the car. BTW, you stationed @ Kadena? Was there from 2011 - 2014 (FSS, @the DFAC). Now, live around Tokyo. Love the civilian life.

It was worth the rent imo, But it's not something i'd do since it's too overrated in some way if you know what i mean but it was cool seeing it. Keep up the videos man they're really enjoyable and entertaining

That is so badass if only they had JDM car rentals here in the states! Its very sad to see how poorly its taken care of though, so a nice car that should be treated way better! I wonder if a customer crashed that FD in the rental car parking lot, if so I wonder what they had to pay as far as the damages go? Did they explain to you what would happen if you wrecked it? Im sure its happened before you know someone tried to Tokyo Drift around a corner and hit something lmao! Man do I love Japanese toy/hobby stores, I would spend way to much money in them I saw so many things I wanted haha! The cars are all so sick, definitely pumped to receive mine! Do you remember how much those huge model cars were at 11:55 . That is pretty interesting they dont have any open container laws there, that has to be nice! Awesome video as always man!
I bet the FD was crashed by a customer! They explained to me that if I crashed it or damaged the motor while driving it hard then all insurance would be voided and I would be responsible for cover the cost of repairs lol...They said they had it chipped and everything to let them know if I was speeding or driving it hard. Also said that you weren't aloud to take it on mountain passes and even had a picture of a scene from Initial D and said NO! haha. I love the model cars and toys Japan offers. It is so awesome! I look forward to sending you some! Pausing the video and looking back I think the big model cars where around $25-30 but they were not assembled or painted in the boxes. Take care dude!
Wow that would be one expensive bill if you crashed it, I cant imagine what you would tell them if you came back with a smashed up RX7 FD lol! Thats pretty cool I didn't realize you get to build them and paint the bigger ones! I thought they were model cars that were premade.

late to the party but I read somewhere on reddit that the driver's seat window in this particular R34 could not be fully closed? is that true? thinking of renting this but something like that could be a dealbreaker especially in colder weather..

I rented the 34 GTST and I didn't think it was worth it, because of all the restrictions that you don't know about until you sign the contract. Sure it's still fun but they say you can't drive mountain roads? I understand why but that would have been some good info to know beforehand.
The rust is from improper crash repair. You can see lots of crash videos of the cars- uploaded by the company themselves.
Their newer cars now have hefty deposits, at least ¥10,000.

I know aesthetically a skyline is leaps and bounds nicer then an evo but mechanically how does it compare to your evo 4?
My 32 feels so much better than the Evo 4. I think it also has a lot to do with it being that particular Evo though. It has some rust and the suspension is shot. The Evo is pretty quick though and I think it would be a close straight line race

Probably after we are done spending the day in Mount Haruna, we will go to the apartment then drop off the R34 and pick up the FD3S the next day. I think we will go to Daikoku Futo with her.

Rent a Lambo is cheaper than in NYC.
Not to mention they're giving you unlimited mileage which is a huge plus.

I don't think power was restricted but it did feel a bit underpowered like maybe it needed a tune up.
Cheaper den fun2drive I guess cos those mountains r too narrow so increases the risk of a slide crash etc, I'd rather just renting at Ota Ku den rent a ae86 from omishuru for 2 days etc and drive in city/neighbouring hoods rather then mountain passes coz that's more advanced
220k of rental kilometers with not the best maintenance (going off the poor rust repair and just the general look under the hood) and it's still going strong says a lot about the r34 GTR....need one

Definitely worth the rent for the one time experience. But the car is abused, shame its not better taken care of.

Do you need a child seat in Japan now (like in the U.S)?? When I was like 5yrs old in Japan back in ancient ago, my seat was between my grandpa's legs on the passenger floor in my dad's Skyline (really, he had one until my 3rd grade).
Yea I think the law changed in the last few years. Age 5 and under are required to be in a car seat. With that being said almost no locals in Okinawa follow that at all haha. I always see small children sitting in parents laps while they drive lol

Thanks man! If you are set on keeping that car I would just keep it clean and simple. Lower it, small bolt ons like intake and exhaust. Or just save your money and by a project car to really have fun with and Keep the Cruz as a comfortable daily.
Hey Grams, just to let you know its known as an inline 4 or i4 not v4. (Cars dont come with v4s though a few have been made in the past) if your Cruze has the 1.4 liter 4 cylinder turbocharged engine, then yes having an intake and at least a catback would do it nice. You will absolutely love the sound of the B.O.V (blow off valve) when you get an intake for it.

Why they treated the car like that maybe because the R34 GTR isn't a huge deal for the Japanese. They probably dont value the car the same way we do because they're a such common sighting for them there.
It really is a shame and TopSecret down there might be right partially. Not even just Japanese people not valuing it but really anyone. Some people would just rather make that extra buck by continuously renting it out and not doing the maintenance. I am willing to bet he has made his money back on that car plus some. Hopefully it will be restored before it gets much worse.

I am really not sure. Last I checked a few months ago the stock 34 GTRs were starting at around 50K USD over here. I know someone who bought a salvaged title one for 38k USD so I'd say somewhere between that maybe

Yea it is definitely sad. Idk how much the rust will effect it for inspection. I imagine with it being on the strut towers like that it could effect the structural integrity.
