    This is a treasure trove, stacks of authors I’ve never heard of.

    Great haul, with some of my favorites. Busby, Clayton and Panshin. The Villiers books are great and very different from Rites of Passage

    Somtow Sucharitkul is also known as S.P. Somtow. I read a werewolf novel from him called Moon Dance years ago, and it was great.

    Great haul. Great video.

      Thanks! Sometimes the book is worth keeping just for the retro cover art!

    The video was so much fun - because eighty per cent of those books are books I saw over and over again at the bookstore and passed on, years ago. So many cases of "that's a great cover, but the only place I know that author's name from is when I browse at the bookstore. Never heard of him, never heard of her. I suspect hackwork.". Now, with all those books out of print, it would be a blast to have those old copies, fill in a few gaps, even with the hacks...then again, some of that Fantasy stuff I would still avoid.
    Another ten per cent of what you have there happens to be by more famous authors, but I never got to those particular books, I read the other minor Brunners, different Poul Anderson books, not that Russ but two others, Edmund Cooper and Kenneth Bulmer (recently! City Under the Sea, actually, which was cool) but not those titles. So there you go.
    However, I did a few things you just showed us: Malzberg's Galaxies; The Year of the Quiet Sun by Wilson Tucker; Stations of the Tide by Swanwick. All recommended, but not emerging as really true faves of mine - in fact, I wish you had Beyond Apollo instead of Galaxies, but I know Outlaw Bookseller is a big fan of pretty much anything Malzberg, if I'm recalling things correctly.
    That was fun. The video was like three or four years of browsing at the bookstore and almost buying things. rolled in to twenty minutes. Thanks!

      You summed it up nicely. These are mostly the kind of things I see in used book stores and while I may be interested if they were free, most of them aren't worth the price in store to take the risk. And like you said, a lot of this stuff you just assume is probably trash lol. That being said there's a lot of good stuff here. I'm keeping a lot of it but definitely don't have space or interest enough to keep all of them. I wish I'd been on booktube two years ago when I bought out a local used book stores entire SFF inventory for $50. That would have been a great video! I'll have to show off the picture in a future video of the hundreds of books I had to go through.

    Wow cool Gary Gygax, creator of D&D... I haven't heard that name in ages! I've never had the pleasure of reading any of his novels, but I used to sit for hours as a kid flipping through the D&D handbook, Monster Manual, and Deities & Demigods. I can still vividly remember my first quest through the Tomb of Horrors. That name definitely brings back some memories!
    Have you ever thought of doing a favorite and least favorite covers video? I'd imagine at this point you have some real winners and even bigger stinkers. It might be a lot of work to put together if you have to go through all your books.

    • @sciencefictionreads
      @sciencefictionreads  Před 2 lety +1

      I totally forgot who Gary Gygax was at the time I recorded this. I have zero D&D experience though, so its not surprising. Always wanted to get into it but never met anyone interested in D&D. I think it'd be super interesting to check out his books though!
      I had thought of doing a video on cover art. I imagine ill do so at some point. I have a few in mind already for both categories!

    Great haul.. Brian likely novel is one of six novels..it's Lovecraftian pastiche. Cool. Most I never heard but 60 novels for 25 euros lol damn. I would have bought all the boxes haha. I bet some could be sold by high price..btw two questions... One Neal Asher I've seen you got s big collection. I read some reviews and people said it has a lot of today's politics in it ( probably like ken MacLeod, or Alastair) is it true? Second, have you heard of Lois McMaster bujold? She has a very interesting sci fi series of 15 novels. Some won nebula and other awards

    • @paulb3849
      @paulb3849 Před 2 lety +1

      I’ve read almost all Neal Asher’s books and didn’t notice any politics, but maybe I was just caught up in the fun and it went over my head. That Swanwick - Stations of the Tide book I have NEVER seen out in the wild. One would think that it would be more commonly available as it’s a Nebula award winner. It even beat out Bujold’s Barrayar novel that year, a novel that I thought was just great.

      I don't tend to notice politics much in what I read, I'm either too dense or don't care lol. But like Paul said, I didn't notice it really while reading what I've read of Asher's work! I've heard of Bujold and I know she's well regarded but I still haven't read anything by her yet!

      No you spealt it correctly. It’s a type of plant. I got the name from Alastair Reynolds ‘House of Suns’, in which a lot of the characters are named after plants. All three of my cats are female and named after female Reynolds characters 😛

      I meant to thank you, but I had to find this video again.
      You didn't tell me the names of the 2 other cats. So let me try to guess..
      Damiana and Ephedra?
      or
      Thyme and Skullcap?
      or
      Nettles and Lavender?
      or
      Lobelia and Marjoram?
      or
      Alfafa and Licorice?
      or
      Comfrey and Mullein?
      or
      Arnica and Catnip?
      or..
      Did I get one at least?

      Oh man! Those are excellent options for cat names! Unfortunately, only Purslane is named after a character from House of Suns which has the plant related names. The other two are Ilia (Revelation Space) and Meroka (Terminal World).@@Seven-Planets-Sci-Fi-Tuber
