The song tells the story of Osowiec Fortress and a battle during World War 1 where the forces of imperial Germany used chlorine gas against the Russian defenders who had no protection against gas and had to wrap wet clothes around their faces in desperation.

To add it was around 7,000 Germans I think against 100 or left Russian soldiers. He should watch the Sabaton history video tho!

they must have truly looked like the walking dead as Chlorine gas basically turns into acid when in contact with water. The Russian defenders that fought back would have been cough up blood that was once their lungs and bleeding from the eyes and other terrible wounds. The sight of which terrified the German forces as they were told no one would survive the gas attack so they took their time as they approached to make sure the gas was fully cleared and were caught off guard in no man's land when the defenders launched their counter attack.

That little old lady rocking out in the front row could have been me! My son loves Sabaton and introduced me to their music, but I don't think I've ever heard this one. The history lessons you can learn by looking for more info are always amazing. Thank you for this reaction and introducing me to the song. I need to ask my son if he's familiar with it.

You're close. It just happens to be WWI not WWII. The giveaway on that is when they sing about "Hindenberg against the Tsar". Around the time of WWI was the beginning of the Communist uprisings in Russia. The lyrical version of this song is cool too and you may want to check it out when you have time. During the solos they talk about the historical influence of chemical warfare and the current worldwide perspectives on their use.

So glad you're starting the Sabaton journey! I only started listening to them about 7ish months ago and have jumped in with both feet! Awesome song and your reaction was great. If you want more details on the events or people in their songs, don't forget about the Sabaton History Channel. A wealth of additional information. 🤘

Radio Tapok released a cover version (in Russian) of this song the day before Sabaton released the song. His video has footage of a short film about the battle.. and it's a great watch.

Steel commanders (sister video to Bismark) made by wargaming for the game "World of tanks" and it's about Tanks! This song gets me into the groove before I start my 12hr shift at work.

If you want to learn more about the stories behind their songs, Sabaton actually has a Sabaton History channel you can check out. It's really fascinating. I recommend 82nd All the Way and To Hell and Back if you haven't heard them yet. If I try to recommend all my favorite Sabaton songs this would just be a paragraph lol. Fun fact, To Hell and Back is apparently one of Joakim's (the vocalist of Sabaton) favorite songs.

Yes. The story you remember is that one. But the battle was during ww1. The fortress is situated in Osowiec, in nowadays Poland. I visited it last summer. The museum lady allowed me to lift the original gas bottle. Weird feeling.
Worth watching the russin version by Radio Tapok :-)

All the soldiers had loads of training about getting down in your trench to avoid artillery and direct fire, but these gases would flow down into t he trench or your dugout , and the best thing would be get as high as possible, like climb a tree if there are any left.
