I feel as though comparing their “power” is futile and kind of ignores their respective purposes; Paths is meant to vastly increase the complexity of AOT’s power system while serving as a great exposition tool to see scenes we wouldn’t normally get access to, while Truth is always a learning opportunity for Ed/ Al, and is almost always used as a “checkpoint” type of system so we can see how far they’ve come along their journey.

Paths (P) is quite different than the Gate of Truth (GoT).
for P, its not the P itself that have powers, its the coordinate. P is more focused on personal aspect of human conflict with the cruel world they lived rather than universal, a world created desperately by Ymir to escape from her pain, death and slavery. The irony is Ymir problem is within her own mind that cannot be solved by god-like power alone.
While GoT is more of a universal concept within FMA world, not restricted to just Edward people ( I forgot what his race/country is called in FMA) as even Ishvalans and Xing people can somehow access aspect of it as portrayed by their combined efforts of undoing the giant trasmutation circle in the finale. Thus unlike P which can only be accessed by Eldians.
However, there is another important difference between P and GoT. GoT has personal restriction in it. By personal, I don't meant the character inner side such as their personality have restriction on their capability to use its power. GoT has its own "human-like" personality who will punish anyone who arrogant with it like what happen to Edward when he was a kid and Homunculus in the finale,.
P doesn't have that or more specifically the Coordinate doesn't have that. Anyone who can use its power, they can literally do anything they want. The only thing stopping them are themselves and the cruel world's law. Hence why Eren (MILD SPOILER! YOU'VE BEEN WARNED!) didn't change the past, he keep the already happened events as they were. That Hallu centipede not exactly stopping Ymir nor Eren from doing anything nor does it punish them. In fact, it grant their wish as much they think its possible at least.
The Coordinate is like Holy Grail mechanic in Fate universe, only it almost doesn't have downside for its users.
Lastly, Truth is a fundamental principle in FMA world, that is why GoT felt more important to the story when you compare it with P.
But SnK fundamental principle is a cruel yet beautiful world, not the Path itself. Although you could argue the Path is also a cruel yet beautiful world itself.

I feel like in fma the idea of God is knowledge itself
Edward attained alchemy without a circle after going through the knowledge of God (though he only got a portion of it because he couldn't handle it) while father managed to work around that and gained all that godly power after attaining the knowledge of God

    • @RubyAPBT
      @RubyAPBT Před 2 lety

Not only knowledge but power too. However even going trought the gate no human retain all of it. The God there know this and that's why he keep a price for it it. Even the homunculus could not hold all of it, even with a sacrifice of philopher stones I think it would go out of control in time since the souls would not hold it forever.

Great Video but I notice that you've forgot some important details of these two concepts.
For the gate of truth, an important aspect is that it's a personnal gate for each people and it's not an universal gate for the humanity in the universe like the path.
We can see that with the different representation of different concepts that are on the gate of some characters :
For Edward it's the sephirotic tree of life Kabbalah
For Alphonse it's an illustration from 15th-century alchemist George Ripley's text "The Marrow of Alchemy"
For Mustang it's the representation of the flame alchemy circle
and for the Homonculus it's nothing.
It's an important detail because it's one of the reason that truth send back where the homonculus came from. Because he have nothing represented on his gate, despite of having a very long time and power to explore the world, he learn nothing.
And for the path you forgot all the similarities with nordic mythology like the Bifröst, Yggradsil and more significations. And that's an important detail for the understanding of the plot.

2:20 You used Avatar: The Last Airbender as an example of a show with no in depth explanation, which I presume you are referencing to an explanation for the existence of bending, but in The Legend of Korra (Avatar's sequel) it's explained why bending and the Avatar cycle exist... [SPOILERS] it's because of ancient spirits and ancient humans that once lived together and that the Avatar state was a living being/spirit that possessed the body of a random newborn after their human host (the former Avatar) dies. Similar to AOT where titans didn't need the their existence explained with the introduction of Paths, Avatar did not need the explanation of bending or the Avatar due to Korra introducing this grand eternal (and sudden) battle of this big white spirit and this big red spirit. ATLA implies the Avatar State is this extra dimensional thing that powers up the chosen Avatar with extraordinary amounts of strength and energy while allowing past Avatars to exist outside of time and have the ability to communicate with or control the current Avatar. At one point, Avatar Aang trains to unlock his 8 inner chakras and doing so makes his mind and soul leave his body to be transported to outer space. That scene was pretty badass and mystical. Korra's introduction of this white spirit completely removed the mystical and otherworldly aspect of the Avatar State. The white spirit was pretty boring and only suddenly appeared because the Korra villain at the time wanted their own Avatar but "dark" so they freed the white spirit's evil friend, the dark spirit, to possess them.
    I personally liked Paths. 🌚

i didn't straight up hate the paths. i just think it's lackluster concept that like... semi doesn't fit the show. it's like: ok Ymir builds the titans.
but then why do they only SOMETIMES pop up like they're prebuilt and not ALWAYS? showing us how Eren slowly generates his titan limbs slowly before getting his full body kind of throws me off. I also misunderstood why Eren transformed at all on my first watch of Season 1. I had the brilliant idea that perhaps Titan Shifters might have a different blood structure that reacts with metals (since there's visibile electricity going on and the first times we saw them transform they were holding something made off metal like Annie's ring or the ODM gear blades), but on my rewatch and the teasers of Season 3 i understood this whole thing was just magic lmao and I refuse to dive deeper into the matter. I miss the study of normal titans. But I do appreciate that the show BASICALLY got rid of all pure titans and focused on the war part more.
Like if I had a ranking of the season my favorite must've been
    Season 1
    Season 4
    Season 2
    Season 3
And there you can see that I like either war torn environments in fiction or apocalyptic settings. To see that the titan crisis only applied to this island... It's whatever.

you also need to trade more to get more out of the Truth and god. And Ed only traded in his leg and then his right arm. While Al probably saw more of the truth since he lost his whole body. that's why they need bigger sacrifices to either see more of the truth or not lose their bodies etc.

If scar went there, it would be god, if Ed, the truth, if a wild animal, all and one, if an atheist, it is “you”. One point of truth is that it adds to the idea of science vs. religion which is one of FMA’s main thematic concepts. It shows how there isn’t much of a fundamental difference between the driving forces of people based on what they believe in despite the differences in beliefs being the cause for so much world conflict. What does paths add besides an excuse to be able to give the founder titan unexplained OP abilities and to see Grisha and Ymir’s backstory? And when is there any type of plot convenience with the gate of truth?

@@sprawlz6466 i think the reason why Ymir gave the powers to eren and not Zeke have been pretty well explained, i don't get why u are saying that it was abrupt
Now coming to the philosophy part of the question what u have said is right and is indeed quite interesting but here's the reason why I say that paths was better done than truth and it's mainly due to storytelling
I clearly dislike the way the truth have been used as a means to dump exposition to the viewer, the philosophy and the themes explored are indeed very good ,but it's very in your face and they are shoving it down ur throats ,paths on the other hand is not a point in the story where they use the backstory to infodump you and give u a 101 on philosophy, the philosophical elements in aot are veryyy subtle yet so clear ..the reason why Zeke is an antinatalist, why eren does what he does ,why does Ymir give her power to eren ,these questions are not answered right after the problems are posed or even after its resolution instead the answer is the characters themselves and and one look at their conversations can give you a whole lot of insight into the reasons
The paths in aot is nothing more than what it is ..it's the converging point of the coordinates and place where Ymir lives
The paths is not a stepping point for taking a break in the story and then explaining to the viewers the philosophy behind the characters actions , the real themes and philosophy has been already been been described along the story and that's why it's called good story telling, instead of giving it to the viewer all at once you give it to them piece by piece like a puzzle and when they solve it you get the answer

    • @sprawlz6466
      @sprawlz6466 Před 2 lety

@@oreki8707 "it's very in your face and they are shoving it down ur throat" is exacly how I would describe Attack on Titan lol. That show has no subtlety and will often slow down and explain stuff directly to the viewer to make sure they're following along. Fullmetal Alchemist does that too occasionally (I think that's just a side effect of being a shonen), but to say it does it any more than AoT is kind of daft. And it isn't like FMA just comes out and explains everything I did before. That's just something that was brought when god/truth quickly described what he is. And that's just a part of the meaning behind those scenes. The gate itself also provides great significance to the narrative. The themes of sacrifice and equivalent exchange are greatly expanded on as well. The whole gate of truth place does such a huge amount for the story in such a short amount of time. It can't possibly embody all of that using nothing but exposition in the amount of screen time that place has. It doesn't rely purely on that like you make it sound.
And you seem to be missing my point as to why I say the paths are a plot device. You like the way the dialogue was written in the scenes where Zeke and Eren explored the past memories to show their ideals without flat out explaining them. And honestly I do too. But that doesn't really have anything to do with the paths themselves being a good tool or not, that's just the general storytelling style AoT had during those particular scenes. This is more along the lines of what I'm talking about:
How are we able to see these memories?
      Because the paths.
      Oh okay.
How can Eren talk to every Eldian at once and even take away their ability to procreate?
      Because the paths.
      Oh okay.
How can Eren bring back all the titan shifters of the past to fight for him?
      Because the paths.
      Oh okay.
The paths are just a convenient tool that Isayama used to do whatever the hell he wanted. The founder titan's powers seem to have no limit as Eren surprises you with one OP thing after another in the final arc. The paths have no real significance for the story other than that. You said it's "the converging point of the coordinates". The show said that too, but what does it even mean? I guess all Eldians have some type of connection there. It seems like something that would be full of relevant and meaningful symbolism that expands on the themes of the story (like the gate of truth did), but it's just a place where things connect, a place that allows the existence of all these powerful abilities, and ultimately just a place that was created so that Isayama can more conveniently tell his story.
