  • Today, we’re going to talk about singing really low. So if you’ve ever felt like you’ve wanted to sing really low, but couldn’t quite get there, it’s my hope that by the end of today’s video, you’ll be singing those low notes with ease. Just like it’s twin video, “How to sing really high” the trick to singing really low is vocal chord position. If you’re interested in learning about singing really high, I will include the link for that video below.
    But back to vocal chord position. If we were to peek inside your larynx, we would see that it is diamond in shape and that your vocal chords are stretched across it in a V shaped position. When you sing low, the entire larynx changes shape so that the chords can contract and thicken. When you sing high, the larynx lengthens and stretches the chords to thin out. Kind of like a rubber band. This is why I am always emphasizing the importance of staying relaxed when you sing. So that the larynx can change it shape, and the chords can freely vibrate without any influence from the exterior muscles.
    There are 3 sounds that you can play with that will keep your chords connecting for some really awesome low notes.
    1. The glottal stop.
    This is a very small unit of sound that brings the chords together quickly. Take your time to register the feeling of space or complete relaxation before you being playing with this sound. This will ensure that your compensating muscles stay out of the way, and you are isolating only the chords on the inside.
    2. Drinking water sound.
    This sound is considered extreme…. so only use it in moderation. But it’s a quirky little sound as if you are pretending to drink water. So close your mouth, and all the space inside your mouth. Isolate your feeling to the larynx, and see if you can vocalize that sound of drinking water. This crazy little sound releases the larynx if it has lifted, as well as allows the chords to connect in a very deep way. So that the resulting tone has more depth to it. But remember, it’s not necessary to do this sound all the time. It is considered extreme as far as vocal chord connections go, so play in moderation.
    3. The vocal fry.
    This whacky sound sounds like a creaky door opening or closing. It’s the smallest unit of sound that our chords can make. It sounds so crazy to use, because we slow the airflow down so much that we can hear each oscillation of the chord. This is our champion sound for being able to learn really low notes. For our exercise with the vocal fry, we are going to slide from a comfortable low note to an unfamiliar low note. (See video for demonstration.) The instance you feel the tiniest bit of pressure applied to your chords, that’s when you slip into the vocal fry. Keep sliding into new depths of lower notes using the vocal fry to explore and develop that note. The vocal fry will take all that pressure off the larynx, and allow the chords to have the opportunity to explore that new vocal chord position.
    There you have it! 3 easy sounds that will show you how to sing really low. I hoped you liked this video! Please feel free to give it a thumbs up, or click the subscribe button below for more singing tips and vocal tricks. If you have any questions, please be sure to leave them in the comments portion of today’s video. I can’t wait to hear from you! Thanks for watching! I’ll see you next time!

    This is why when I wake up I can sing one whole octave lower for about twenty minutes and after that I literally lose that octave.

      @@Kenny...... Support your fry and you'll do strohbass, which is subharmonics, similar in sound to kargyraa, but with a different way to produce the sound. You have your note and a perfect fifth below that, which, both combined, produce half the frequency of your initial note, so the note one octave below. Strohbass can expand one's range from a fourth to a sixth depending on the mastery of the technique. Bass2Yang is a channel where you can see what it sounds like when done well, and how it sounds really different from chest register.
      But neither vocal fry or strohbass are morning voice. My personal morning voice is fully modal, and can grant me from 2 semitones to 6 semitones depending on how well I slept (so not an octave at all, although if I compare normal modal range to morning strohbass range, I guess that's close to a full bonus octave, but that doesn't count). In morning voice, my strobass/fry range also expands by that much.

Many people post videos who really don't know much of what they are talking about. It was refreshing to find yours since you obviously do. I'm a very low bass, I write my own songs for non commercial use and I'm trying to find a well trained vocal coach who appreciates the concept of a lead bass acapella singer instead of the traditional "3 tenors and a bass drone" old school ideaology.

    I developed the low end last, but it was the same process I used to learn how to sing up to the tenor's high C (I'm just an "average baritone" type voice, but I prefer to sing more as a bass-baritone because it's a more unique sound and there's less stress on the vocal cords and less dryness issues). My approach was to learn the "pure" vowels, singing them up and down. Then you work certain sounds/words that develop the relevant muscles for higher or lower range singing. I can't say I know that this works for women too, especially soprano type voices, but it should be safe to do, so long as basic precautions are taken, such as stopping if there is any discomfort and getting enough water.

    Hi Miss Madeleine, I'm Su Su San, 18 years old, and a Law student at university. I found your video on "How to sing really high" when I searched for "High notes and low notes in music" in CZcams. I watched that video to the end and I really, really find it very helpful. Now I have just finished watching this video "How to sing really low", too.
    I'm looking for high notes and low notes videos in CZcams because I'm trying to improve my English intonation skill. I've heard from many English teachers that we speak English by gliding from high pitch to low pitch speech throughout a phrase and that speaking a language is like singing a song. So, that led me to find out more on this topic, high notes and low notes in music. And I found your video. But, I've got some questions to ask you.
    Questions:
    Q1: According to your video on "How to sing really high," at 6:24, you told us that changing from low to high pitch isn't like a yo-yo, you don't want to give us the visual thinking of up and down, and that we ENGAGE without putting pressure on our voice for low notes while we SIGH/RELEASE UPWARDS for high notes.
    So, with that means, in contrary to it, do we ENGAGE without putting pressure on our voice for high notes while SIGH/RELEASING DOWNWARDS for low notes?
    Q2: Did you swallow your saliva to make extreme cord closure at 6:38?
    Q3: Does doing vocal fry make up the lowest note?

    • @MadeleineHarveyVoice
      @MadeleineHarveyVoice  Před 5 lety

      Thanks so much for your questions! Hopefully this helps answer them.
      A1: Yes. Air pressure is essential to a consistent sound. What we are practicing here is the release of excess pressure.
      A2. This is a temporary coordination of the vocal cords that allows you to feel the release into the lower part of the voice without excessive pressure.
      A3: It can. The idea behind this is to teach the vocal cords how to coordinate the low pitch without pushing down. It allows for us to access the deepest notes without relying on any help from exterior muscles.

    Baritone with a small chest voice (F2 - G3) here. Fry definitely helps, I can fry down to notes in the first octaves) and even hit a B0 according to my brother who was tuning his guitar next to me haha.
    I still suck tho

    Is this to train our lowest range--beyond our lowest pitches? I sing in award-winning Vocal Matrix Chorus, barbershop, and our Basses can go really low, but they are trained to not sit on the bottom, but to still place tone in the mask and to mix chest/head, achieve optimum resonance, all over the vocal body.

    I think your idea of relaxation is so on point. I find I struggle to get low stuff out when I'm more tense. Hoping to nail the relaxation when going lower sooner, I totally get it with the higher register, but I find lower range a whole different beast.

    Question? How about make your low notes high.
    What I mean by that is making the low notes strong instead of being not almost completely silent.

    • @AnonYmous-oe6zj
      @AnonYmous-oe6zj Před 4 lety

      I personally do it by placing them in my chest, not sure how else to describe it but it's like letting it reverberate in my chest which gives me a lot more resonance. That plus keeping your throat completely relaxed should give the note power. My A2 is very... how do I put this... Juicy because of it, and this is also how I get down to G2/F2 (though that's out of my comfort zone so doing it too much would strain my voice).

    Have you heard of Kargyraa? If so, what are your thoughts about it? I've heard some really low notes using this effect, and I could reach B0 by doing so. It's often used in a singing style called Khoomei, from the region of Tuva (Russia/Mongolia)

  • @bogsbinny7124

    is it normal that when I vocal fry i feel it all in my throat and my larynx actually goes into my neck (not down, but in) it feels very tense, not relaxing at all. i also lose all my low notes as the day goes on and my fry becomes much much weaker . i can actually sing low notes louder when i sing inward (inhale singing, rare ability, i know) and that ability doesn't weaken as the day goes on (I can sing/fry a really loud and resonant G1 this way (it's loud enough to annoy my family)
    that tells me that there is something wrong with my breath support or exhale mechanism. if only I could do inhalare la voce, perhaps I could combine my inward singing with normal singing but I cannot get the sensation of inhaling while singing down so it's hopeless

    • @DanielElson
      @DanielElson Před 6 lety

      No I think the subharmonics range you have to slowly descend in the scale I'm 15 and doing subharmonics, I already have a deep voice, b flat 1 and I only have to do an f sharp 2 and subharmonics allow me to hit a f sharp 1 really loudly it helps the deeper your voice is but for me, the easiest to do is g sharp 1 at anytime
