  • Dorothy Molter, called the loneliest person in the United States was the last legal resident of the BWCA. For 56 years she lived on Knife Lake where she greeted canoeists with a warm smile and a glass of cold homemade root beer.
Perhaps you were lucky enough to stop at her cabin for a root beer.
Her story is part of the incredible history of the BWCA. It's also the subject of a one-woman show playing at the History Theatre in St. Paul.
For this Lunch with Friends, we’ll talk with actress Kim Schultz and director Addie Gorlin-Han on how they brought this story to life.
Join us today for a great conversation on creativity, wilderness and this iconic woman!

Thanks for the video, brought back fond memories. Have stayed in all of her cabins at least once-both pre and post 1964. Cap (her father) would be up there with her in the summer (until he passed) and I believe was in his 90s then, and still fishing. Glad to see her legacy lives on.
Another character of that area I only remember as Pete, who we would always visit.

What a happy discovery! I travelled the BWCA and Quetico many times back in the 80's, never heard of Dorthy. Fond memories of Cliff Wold. But I also love root beer, so a case is now excitedly on order from the museum. Madison, WI. Thank you!
