The Scenic Route (Eisenhower) to Naperville Airpark

  • A short flight from Janesville, WI (KJVL) to Naperville, IL (LL10) had me wonder: will Chicago Approach give me a clearance through the O'Hare Class Bravo, or will I have to fly around it? Make no mistake - flying around it still results in a spectacular flight with beautiful views of the Chicago skyline from over Lake Michigan, and following the Eisenhower Expressway between O'Hare's Class Bravo and Midway's Class Charlie provides an easy route to Naperville from there. So either way we win!

    I used to fly from Naper Aero to Meigs Field everyday for work. Nice way to commute for sure. When they shut Meigs down in the middle of the night by carving giant, 12" deep X's into the runway, we were obviously finished. My buddy used to live there. We also had some great parties at Naper Aero. Those people know how to have serious fun. Lots of great and storied pilots have flown out of there over the years. I lived in Naperville for many many years. It's like Chicago west now it's so crowded. We happily left there 13 years ago and I've never been back. When we buily our first of 2 homes there, the town was awesome. It was kind of big but had a super small town feel. Now it's so dense it's silly. They're building million dollar plus houses on less than 1/8th acre lots. Lot line to lot lin and no backyards. The downtown area is so different, it's not recognizable. Sweet Home Chicago has moved to Naperville. Yeah, Naper Aero is awesome. Also used to fly from another aero community in Downer Grove every once in while. Fly safe

      Thanks for the comment. I bet what you describe has unfortunately become the fate of many, many homes in once nice small town-like neighborhoods. And as far as Meigs Field goes, I want to cry when I think of what Mr. Daley did to that beautiful airport.

    Somehow just came across this, but this video was double special for me. We have a 1947 Bonanza (SN#190) that’s been in the family for 50+ years that I will hopefully be acquiring soon. But on top of that, I used to live and grew up in Naper Aero, or “Aero Estates”. This brought back a lot of memories. Thank you so much for making/posting this. Amazing!

      Jeff, I used to live in River Run. When we first moved to Naperville, we lived on the north end, and River Run was still a big farm. LOL It's sad to see how much they've turned it into such a dense place. I built a 4500 squre foot house in River Run for under 400K. I'm guessing it's a mil or close to it now. Man we had such gorgeous lots there, it was truly amazing. I miss the house and the lot, but not the crowds.

    Thanks for taking me along on the flight, Martin. I flew into Clow from CID in my old Cherokee 180 a long time ago to see my sister who lived close by. Like a dummy, I flew a right hand pattern and got uncomfortably close to a sea plane landing from the left. I went around and flew the left pattern, like I was supposed to. I thought for sure the sea plane guy would come after me when I landed! But, he didn't, thank goodness . I learned a valuable lesson to fly left patterns unless otherwise indicated. Seems to me there was another grass, or dirt runway parallel on the west side that was used for sail planes. I didn't even know it was there. Don't think it's there anymore. Rick in Tucson

Do you use the Aspen plates during IFR approaches? What about the weather displays like METARS and other weather displays during flight compared to using the 750s or your iPad. I look forward to seeing you shoot approaches to see how you get everything configured between your 750s and the Aspens. I am curious about using 2 750s instead of a 750/650 combo. That is a very pricey combo for the average Joe. I enjoy your videos so keep them coming.

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  Před rokem

      @@GrumpyBumpy You are right, Leo - two 750s aren't cheap. I use one for a map display and the other one for flight plan edits - most of the time. I really wanted two GPSs for redundancy and utility, and my experience from my prior setup (with a large IFD550 and a small IFD440) taught me that I really don't make any real use of the smaller device. So I figured I'd spring for two large ones this time - not easy on the pocketbook, but I felt I'd regret it down the road if I did not go that route.

I don't know how many hours I spent on that (then) coarsly pixeled and monochrome virtual airfield only to find out that it is meanwhile erased beyond distinctibility. Tempora mutantur, et nos in illis. Meanwhile, I have 1.500 real SEP hours in a VL-3 915iS. Mainly in Europe out of Berlin, but also over Africa and (2021) deeply into Russia. Never made it to KCGX in real life. What a shame...

      I very much miss Meigs Field. My first landings there were in MS Flight Simulator, like you. Later I landed on the real thing many times. I hope there is a special place in hell reserved for Mr. Daley for what he did there.

    It would be nice to live in a GA Airpark. Nice flight, Martin. Are you getting more used to the new avionics? I see you have what looks like a Garmin GI-275. I thought with an Aspen 2000 or 2500 you had all the requirements for a backup instrument. Is that there for your mental well being, or is that required for the GFC-600 install?
    Anyway, 70TB is looking great.

      Hi Gary - yes, I am getting used to the new avionics, and things are becoming easier and feel more natural. I guess that's the normal development when starting to use something new.
      Good question about the backup instrument. Legally the Aspen 2500 system does not require a backup. However, I feel comfort in having what's called a dissimilar device - different hardware and different software from the main instrument it backs up. That way, a single mistake in either the hardware or software design cannot bring down all available information.
      The GFC600 does not require a Garmin PFD; it interfaces only with the Aspens.

      Martin

      @@martinpauly I thought the GFC-600 didn't need a Garmin system, but things change sometimes. One of the reasons you chose it to go along with the Aspens, if I remember you correctly. As to the dissimilar device, I perfectly understand that.

    I have a video idea for you and also a question. How about a video documenting the Aspen AoA calibration process? Also, what is causing the “Traffic Degraded” message? I have never seen that with my Aspen/Lynx integration. Is this something caused by the Garmin ADS-B transponder?

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  Před rokem

      That's a good idea.
      Regarding the "degraded traffic", the Aspen manual says it means that there is no ADS-B traffic data uplinked from the ground. I'll have to ask Aspen if that message is meaningful anymore - I'm not sure it is.

      @@martinpauly I have some questions about your installation. It looks like you are using a Garmin ADS-B transponder to feed traffic to the Aspens. It look like only the left MFD is receiving traffic. Did you not get the traffic unlocks for the PFD and MFD 1000? I find having traffic on the nav map really useful.
      Second question. If you are using a Garmin ADS-B transponder, why doesn’t your 750s show traffic trend symbology?
      One of the reasons I ended up with the Lynx 9000 was that it fed FIS-B to the Aspens (radar, METARS, etc.). My Garmin GTN won’t accept the Lynx weather products but does accept TIS-B. At the time, when the Garmin 345 was released, it wouldn’t feed weather to the Aspens. Have they opened that option up now?
      Third question. I am using Garmin Pilot and a GDL-52 for Sirius XM. I find the iPad is a much better format for managing charts as well as providing another source for weather and traffic information Is that what you are doing as well?
      Final question. How often do you see the “Check AHRS” message on your MFD.

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  Před rokem

      @@Marauder92V I think traffic is unlocked on all three units. For sure I've seen it on the right MFD1000, though the heading calibration issues I am still seeing there make traffic display not too useful. I have not tried to show traffic on the PFD - I find it sufficient to have one good traffic display on the left MFD (the 500 in my case).
      Traffic trend - I have disabled that so far. One of a million new things I need to understand, then decide if I want it (or not), and then get used to. Give me time... 😁
      I use my iPad the same way. In terms of size, resolution and user-interface, I feel the iPad is better suited for these tasks than any of the panel-mount avionics. Having said that, modern panel-mount avionics sure makes a nice and capable backup for the iPad - much better than what I used to have.
      Check AHRS? I can't say that I've noticed it.

      @@martinpaulyIt looks like only the 500 has traffic unlocked. In the lower left hand corner of your units the status of the inputs are displayed. On the 500, I see the TFC indicator that is being received. I don’t see that on the PFD or the MFD 1000. I see regional weather on the MFD 1000 but no traffic.
      The calibration issue you are encountering on the MFD 1000 might be linked to the “Check AHRS” message. At 8:37 of your video, you can see the yellow error message. This message is signifying a problem. I can’t remember all of the factors that produce it, but it is definitely something you want to have the shop look at.
      As for the Target Trend, it is different than the typical traffic presentation you were used to seeing on your Lynx. The main difference being the trend indicator and seeing it coming out of the back of a target that you are overtaking. I do like it since it does provide some sense of relative closure rates as well as where the target is heading.

    During departure, plane ahead and behind 70TB reported ready for take off. Only 70TB used correct wording with ready for departure. There is a big difference and my flight instructor would slap me on the head if I use ready for take off! This change was the result of Teneriffa crash involving two B747 with 500 people dead. I was wonder why Tower didn’t say anything, maybe they heard it all day.

      Good observation. I emphasize this with my students: the words "take-off" and "landing" are reserved only for the actual clearance, not for anything else that might be related. I hear pilots use the wrong terminology all the time, so Tower controllers are probably desensitized.

      @@Piper63180 I agree there is less opportunity for confusion at non-towered airports (simply because there is no clearance to take off or land that this could be confused with), but the AIM (chapter 4-1-9) uses the word "departure" even here. The example they give for announcing your departure on the CTAF is as follows:
      "Strawn traffic, Queen Air Seven One Five Five Bravo departing runway two six. Departing the pattern to the (direction), climbing to (altitude) Strawn." See AIM 4-1-9 g (6) b.

      Hi Martin. I have followed your site for quite some time and and will acknowledge that your expertise in all things GA surpass none! That being said and it being a dreary rainy day here in the south…this is the perfect time for an online hangar chat. I’m in agreement as to the use of departure when announcing intentions at ramp, inbound, and outbound (as noted in your AIM 4-1-9 example). Here is where we have a slight difference of interpretation - example (I’m #1 holding short at Taxiway A and Runway 26): “CTAF COUNTY TRAFFIC, Piper xxxxW, Taking Off Runway 26, Departing the pattern to SouthWest, CTAF COUNTY”. I think the only difference I’m making is communication during actual taxi communication and takeoff. It was great hearing from you! JonhC

      @@Piper63180 There's nothing wrong with a hangar chat, John! I follow your logic, and I agree the same distinction between "departure" and "take-off" at towered airports could also help emphasize intentions at non-towered airports. But when I looked at the AIM earlier to respond to your prior message, I could find no guidance along those lines - I just saw the word "departure" there. If you can point me at some guidance to use "taking off", I'd love to see it. Thank you.
