  • This video looks at the secession of Southern States starting with South Carolina. The failed attempts at Compromise (Crittenden Compromise and Virginia Peace Plan) are evaluated. The events at Fort Sumter that start the American Civil War are examined. This is the culmination of the series so far looking at the causes of the American Civil War. Future videos will look at the Civil War itself and then Reconstruction. Suitable for A Level, IB and APUSH

In a way, the fact that the Confederate Constitution in most respects copied the United States constitution so closely suggests that in their own minds the secession leaders were almost defending the existing constitution rather than rejecting it. They thought they were the last true Americans rather than wanting to cease to be Americans.
Among the few differences, apart from explicitly protecting slavery and prohibiting tariffs on imports, and making the manner of addressing the President 'Your Excellency' rather than 'Mr President', a main difference was that rather than a 4 year term for Presidents, with re-election allowed, the Confederate President would serve a single 6 year term, with no further term allowed.
Whether that would have worked better or worse we don't know. However, it did have the effect that Abraham Lincoln had to run for re-election in 1864 while the War was still going on (and at one stage he expected to lose the election) while Jefferson Davis did not. That was surely to the Confederate advantage.
The practical problems of organizing a Presidential election with much of their territory a war zone or under Union occupation would also have placed an unwelcome strain on the already stretched Confederate government and states.
We also do not know how Presidential candidates would have emerged in the Confederate system in which there were no political parties to nominate candidates.
