The problem with this is that you sacrifice two factors: comprehension and retention. Vocalizing or subvocalizing force you to process each word increasing those factors. It might be slower but its a better method.
@@bbf0ab08cb44becfec Well, yeah, most people do; what you read and the conditions you're in affect the how you read, but thats not my point. He's putting as an example a reading assignment, in that case is better to retain and comprehend as much as possible, instead of just reading fast.
It also depends on the reader. I find that this method works perfectly well if I'm interested, I'll take in a lot pretty easily. If I'm not, this method stops me from taking anything in. If anything, it takes longer since I have to read over and over again.
iâve always enjoyed reading but have been pretty slow. i learned this about a year ago and now i get the pride of being the first done with the reading assignments
Good readers vocalize at crazy speed. It just takes practice. You retain information better if you focus on each word and make an effort to understand the meaning behind each one instead of just scanning it.
Ppl who have issues vocalizing fast probably just lack practice. Go read more, even if it's for entertainment, like a story or novel, it gets better naturally.
This is how Iâve read for years as I was a huge reader as a child and learned to read quickly very fast. However a 100 page assignment is still a 100 page assignment and if itâs more a dense book itâs going to take twice and long to understand while youâre reading.

Wow
yeah that's how it is for some people. My dad tells me that before exams or while studying it's best to not listen to music because it can get stuck in your head, or you may get distracted from it. I think maybe soft piano is fine but not with a loud volume.
I can actually read while listening to music lol
He said music
Not songs bruh
Teacher:Pass Your Assignment!
That one Student:
Thatâs how I usually read, it just takes a few minutes for my brain to relax and do that
As someone who's been doing this since childhood: reading without having that voice in your head say the words is so much faster. You won't remember as much but if you just need to finish a book for school or get a basic understanding for something it definitely helps :)
Yea i dont do that cuz i read fiction and wanna undersyand the book

@@negri1682 I read like that all the time and I understand everything , in fact I get fully absorbed in a book and don't notice my surroundings at all. Sometimes I forget where I am sitting. The best feeling in the world
Same. Iâve been doing this since I was in lie 3rd class and Iâm able to fully comprehend things Iâm reading and can figure out puzzles quickly because my internal narrator speaks so fast. In secondary school and itâs such an advantage.
I've never read a book with my inner voice, didnt even know people did that
Iâm so fucking disappointed. I still vocalized the lines even when reading quickly, I canât stop myself, even when trying to see them as shapes.
If things fly by fast, I just sub vocalize faster lol

Iâm sorry, but if I donât vocalize the words in my brain, Iâll read through it fast, but I wonât actually completely understand the book is talking about. That last part with the words, I was able to read but still vocalized it in my head. I can listen to music and even be around peopleâs conversations and still focus on the book, and even pick up stuff going on around me. Idk, thatâs just me, this might work for someone else.
well if you wanna do your own technique then do it, he's not forcing you to not vocalise it.

@@ccasuall oohhh sorry if miunderstood you !
The problem with this is that you sacrifice two factors: comprehension and retention.
Vocalizing or subvocalizing force you to process each word increasing those factors. It might be slower but its a better method.
I read very differently when I read scientific vs non science material
@@bbf0ab08cb44becfec Well, yeah, most people do; what you read and the conditions you're in affect the how you read, but thats not my point.
He's putting as an example a reading assignment, in that case is better to retain and comprehend as much as possible, instead of just reading fast.
Depends on the person I guess
It also depends on the reader. I find that this method works perfectly well if I'm interested, I'll take in a lot pretty easily. If I'm not, this method stops me from taking anything in. If anything, it takes longer since I have to read over and over again.
iâve always enjoyed reading but have been pretty slow. i learned this about a year ago and now i get the pride of being the first done with the reading assignments
"you can listen to music"
me: vibing to music instead of reading
Good readers vocalize at crazy speed. It just takes practice. You retain information better if you focus on each word and make an effort to understand the meaning behind each one instead of just scanning it.
Yes, if you scan the thing, you won't understand. I mean at least I don't.
I heard it was impossible to actually get rid of the voice when you read? I might be wrong, not sure.
i do vocalize but iâm slow
@@burcen3633 bruh is it? I'm screwed then
Ppl who have issues vocalizing fast probably just lack practice.
Yeah if you read as fast as you can for an assignment then you may need to read it more than once
True for me too

I can just automatically skim through a book when Iâm reading. Itâs because my eyes and brain are processing the words into a daydream similar to a movie. This is why I love reading so much, I get to watch a TV show that isnât on Netflix
Yeah perks of reading novels is that it turns to a scene in your head
I can do that but at a very slow rate, maybe because I am not a native speaker, but I can tell you I enjoyed reading The Hobbits that way...I found it soo amusing and each pge was like a scene and I watched it through my head, really reading is phenomenal
