    Correction: As some have pointed out, this is a set neck design, not a thru neck design. Sorry about that y’all.

    Thanks for the good review! They are tough to find unless you go thru Reverb. Some of the asking prices are getting pretty crazy, I did get lucky last Fall and scored a 1996 Epiphone double cut Junior with a dog eared P-90. Serial number showed that it was made in Japan by the Terada factory. It roars!! Sometimes you get lucky!! Keep up the good work!!

    Good stuff man. Interesting comment about this guitar for you being primarily for lead playing. I think of a junior as a riff machine. 😊

    I bought the same guitar new back in the day for $375 CA if I remember correctly. I've never considered selling it. I've done the same basic mods: white button tuners, a Gibson P-90 and a wiring harness upgrade. It looks like yours has had a pickguard swap, mine is black. I put thumb bleeders on my control knobs. I like the no-tone pot switch on yours, it would give it an extra bit of crispness; I like how an Esquire does that too. The tone probably could be improved with a high quality-metal wraparound bridge upgrade, but I haven't tried that yet. When I ditched the Grovers I checked to see if the holes would fit 3-on-a-strip tuners and they would not. Nowadays Epiphone offers more faithful LP reissues but when this one came out it was an exception.

    I bought a yellow Epi '57 reissue Junior 4 1/2 years ago for $400 CDN. It is in perfect condition but it was very dirty when I got it. I guess I overpaid, but IMO it's a better looking guitar than the current Epi Juniors with their veneers. What I like about it is the set, fat neck and the era correct 3 screw guard. I took off the gold top hats and put on black ones, proper for a light colored Junior..
    I have a Gibson P-90 to stuff under the dog ear cover but haven't done it yet.
    A 2022 Gibson ebony Junior is crossing Canada right now for delivery next week, but I'll be keeping the Epi for now. It's a good mod platform.

    I've had 2 Gibson 2019 Original Collection models & i had one of these Epi 57 Reissue's & i just got the Billie Joe signature model with the set neck & it's the best Jr i've ever owned. It's 7lb, rings like a bell & seriously loud unplugged! I just shimmed the p90 & it's an absolute monster!

    • @Paul-rt4ix
      @Paul-rt4ix Před rokem

      @@slimturnpike It's Poly but it doesn't feel like the Poly guitar's i've had before. Some feel sticky but this is very smooth, even the neck feels fast. I can't say enough about these Billie Joe set neck models! Mine has a really dark fretboard too that looks better than my 2019 Gibson i had! I never expected to enjoy an Epi Jr over a Gibson one!

    I have one of these too, really heavy slab of mahogany. There is a new set neck model available from epiphone built like it, but with a better finish. Mine 57 is modified with dual soapbars and a bigsby, love it!

    I have a couple Epiphones. My favorite is a John Lee Hooker Boogie Man Sheraton. I swapped out the pickup for Seymour Duncan Phat Cats and the electronic Emerson Custom wiring harness. The results were pretty amazing. It’s my main guitar I play in my band. We’re a 3 guitar band so I’m always looking for sonic diversity. So Strats and this guitar fit the bill. I play a Vox AC30 so I kind of take on the role of the clean and jangly guitar sounds.

  • @petset77

    I love the Junior. A friend I played with in the late 70s had (has) a '54. I've wanted one off and on since. As an old guy, and one who was primarily a bass player who recently started playing again, I started looking. For my needs, a Gibson is out of the question. I found that either a Special or Junior with P90s is costlier than a humbucker model. I found an Epi Special for a hundred bucks on ebay and bought it. The plan was to do the P90 conversion. I still haven't. I want a Junior... with a P90.

    It would be interesting to see a tuner check on the first position notes with this one, sounds like the nut could use some work.

    It's not a neck through. It's a set neck. Neck through is what you would find on a firebird. Also that wood isn't mahogany. It's most likely a native Philippine wood called lauan..

    • @evanogden
      @evanogden  Před rokem

      Thanks for the clarification on the set neck v. Through neck! I appreciate it. I’m terms of the wood. Everything I have seen and been able to find on this specific model indicates it’s a solid mahogany body. Epiphone is likely using a veneer on the top to make the guitar look the way it does. That said, I haven’t found an “official” spec sheet from epiphone specifically so I’m open to reviewing one.

    Slight mods make such a huge difference. So, somewhere around a total of $400.00 investment, after the mods? I'm like you, I'm not really a lead player. Epiphone are doing some things right, most especially at the Gibson Engineer's direction. I think the Indonesian Custom Shop (the old Samick factory) has really outdone themselves in the last 2 years, particularly. Great vid, brother man 👍

    • @evanogden

    When you swapped the p-100 out, did you have to use a shim for the p-90? I imagine being a stacked pickup it would be taller than the average p-90

    It's actually a set neck, not a neck through. A neck through guitar has a neck that goes all the way from the top of the headstock through the heel of the body. A set neck, such as on the Les Paul, Jr., has a glued in neck, glued into the body. Nice video!
