    2004 Z4 USA/Canadian Convertible roof not working problem. My top used to work up and down. One day it would not open. A few months later I found the problem that I bet a mechanic would have charged a fortune in un-needed repairs. The 2004 Z4 has a shelf in the trunk. There are two gizmo hand cranks that can lower or lift it. If the shelf is in the upper position, the roof cannot be opened - a sensor knows the position. Well, my car that I bought used did not have the shelf anymore. Apparently, something I put in the trunk shifted the hand crank on one side. Looking this issue up on the net pointed me in this direction. Looked and found one side different from the other. Changed one of them and problem solved! Roof now works up and down.

    My 2004 Z4 2.5i finally has some suspension problems. Believe it to be a bad left rear shock. Been accumulating suspension stuff...new shocks all the way around, new strut mounts fore and aft, new sway bars front, bump stops all the way around, and a few other things. May get the front reinforcement plates although, my factory metal looks fine - no mushrooming. Will have a shop install everything since I don't have a spring compressor and I don't feel comfortable doing these. Did change my own brakes and rotors - got great rotors with holes and grooves. Changed out broken passenger rear wheel brake sensor. Have new right front passenger wheel sensor, but even BMW can't seem to supply me with the car side of the connector which crumbled. Will solder the wires together and be done with it.

    Follow me home lights... cool. Have you tried the throttle reset? I forget the sequence (ignition on for 30 seconds, ignition off for 30 seconds, then start engine I think), but from what I understand the car tailors the throttle response to match the way it’s driven. I bought mine from a guy who drove 3 miles across town to the shops and back once a week, so when I reset it, the throttle response was noticeably perkier. May not make so much difference in your case though as you’ve been enjoying yours for a while now.

    Great video as usual Joel! One more light trick you many not know about... At least on the facelift models...
    sit inside.. turn your car off... your headlights off. then - select either left or right on the turn signals. If the feature is turned on, it will illuminate either the left or right side marker lights.
    Great for parallel parking and want to keep your corner lights on to be visible on the traffic side... even though you are not leaving. Just a couple of lights are on so it doesn't drain your battery as much as if they all were on.
    I discovered this on my 07 Si. Even the angel eye will turn on. ;) I don't really use it. I think it is more of a european or japanese thing.?? Cheers!

      I had cruise control retro fitted by a BMW dealership to my 2007 Z4 3.0L Si. Coupe in 2019. Unfortunately, on/off cruise control and speed set display information is not available for my particular year/model of car (according to BMW Technical Department in London). Also, a retro fitted updated instrument display cluster is not available. As cruise control was offered as a factory fitted optional extra for this particular car from new, I find this incredible! 2004 Z4 USA/Canadian 2.5i. Had a transmission indicator light light up. Car would only run in 3rd gear in safety mode. Ran it for 3 or 4 months. Standard non BMW OBD-II could not detect problem. Bought a $100 BMW OBD-II device that let me look at the transmission. It let me reset the transmission error. It did not seem to work. Still had problem. Next day drove the car and it was working perfectly again. After a year, the problem has never come back. I would hate to think what a BMW dealership would have said the problem was and what it would cost to fix it. A $100 BMW OBD-II fixed my problem. Hope this helps someone. Apparently, it was a minor hiccup in the computer system that was easily solved by the software reset. Hope this is the right forum for this Joel. If not, please direct me, or move my post.

    Do you know if its true that every bmw ever made has x amount of spare keys in a warehouse in Germany ?

    • @BtrouperN
      @BtrouperN Před 3 lety

      Don't know about that in Germany. I wanted a new key/fob because my battery seems to be loosing strength in my fob. Old one would be a spare. My Z4 is a 2004 2.5i. The dealer used the last 7 (I think) digits of the vin. He had to order it (I'm near Savannah, GA USA). It only took a few days. You have to have the car there at the dealership. They put the key in the ignition and then press a couple combinations on the fob to SET the key to the car. And that's it! New key/fob. BTW, in America, you have to present a current ID and a current car registration. Hope this helps someone. BTW, again, the key/fob cost over $200!!! OUCH! I asked if they could replace the battery in the old key/fob. They said NO, when it is dead it is dead. Do appear to be videos to crack it open, replace battery and re-glue it back together. Didn't want to do this until I had a key/fob that worked!!! Thinking if you do this, you might need to reprogram it to the car like they did at the dealership. Probably can find that online.

    The hidden info in the dash. Stumbled across that awhile back on my 2004 Z4 USA/Canadian model. Seems like there was a number to use to see the miles on the car to see if they were different from what is on the main dashboard. I really think I saw this unless it was a dream. I ran the car for about a year with the speedometer not working (used a GPS for speed); thus the mileage never changed. Interestingly, once fixed, the speed shown on the display was MORE than what the GPS shows - factory size tires. So, display shows 70 MPH...GPS (several of them) may show 65 to 67. Had a bad rear tire speed sensor. Seems like the hidden menu had a mileage code that told the actual miles - though don't know how it knew. Anyone know? This would be useful for buyers because obviously, that sensor could be disconnected and reconnected later whereas the mileage shown on the display would be totally wrong - like in my car (mine is probably off around 8000 miles). I'll look further into this. Interestingly, if this is true, it might be there for a number of other cars. The Z4 uses one of the rear tire speed sensors to power the speedometer and the mileage (forget which side it was). Good to know if this happens to you before you take it to a mechanic. They are EASY to replace yourself. However, on older cars like mine, the connector from the car side (not the tire side) crumbles when you take it apart. Even the dealerships have a hard time figuring out how to order that connector and cable. I am into several weeks of wrong parts coming from the dealer. Hope this helps someone! Love your site! Z4Thanks!
