I was just wondering.......................Have you ever built caravans before? LOL
Haha, snap!
If he has, bet they saved a fortune in sealant when he left 😁
You think he would mention that if he had built caravans before, I never heard him say it in this video .
Clearly not
Love the "warts and all" coverage of Bertha's reno! Just goes to show you are able to work through and figure out remedies, though I definitely felt your frustration. Great work and Bertha just keeps on looking good.😊
Thank you!
What about raptor paint in white? The reflection on some car canopys with checker plate is bad. This van would annoy other road users or worse in a caravan park on a sunny day.
It's not bad looking but think of others.
Yeah I was thinking the same, raptor would definitely reduce the reflection/glare.
Would like to add another vote for the raptor paint think I would look good and be more hardy than a satin coat you mentioned
Definitely not too much checkerplate looking great
🙌🏼
You are so lucky to have that huge shed to restore your van!
It’s all coming together well🎉
Yes we are extremely lucky to have access to it!
Renovating anything can be frustrating but it’s the end result that matters and your renovation is coming along nicely hang in it will look brilliant when finished
So true!
Cheers mate!
Great work and looking really good
Love watching you both with the Reno's. When siliconing maybe wear gloves so your hands don't dry out and get it stuck on your hands. You are doing a great job.
Thanks!
You should be proud of your selves.
We are 😁 thanks!
you could put what you wipe off under the next section and if you put the sealer for the wide section 3/4" from outside will save sealer as it will squeeze to the outside and make the seal
Yes definitely could but would soak up a lot of time I reckon
Great work. Sometimes things just don't go exactly to plan but in the end it all comes together. I feel your pain, literally, on the drill into your hand. I built my house with a metal frame and thousands of screws and did the same injury many times.
Thanks!
Great work, your looking tired Erin. Lots of work involved😊❤
When we eventually get to Queensland l will have to get you to check over our van, payment will probably be a beer or two.
Bertha is comming into the new age
silicon sucks, I mean, sticks .... to everything :) Its amazing how the trim pieces bring all the elements together now and its looking good... The other side will be a good job. ... Don't be to hard on yourself , only you know where it doesn't meet your standard, anyone else looking at the van will be oblivious to the small blemishes.. Hope the hand get better quick , that was some touchy!!!
Thank you!
What a great job you both are doing.
🙌🏼
nice kawasaki jetski, looks like we've serviced it at BK going off the white kawasaki sticker above the sponson.
Looks like a nice machine, it’s the bosses who owns the shed 👍🏻
You've nailed it. Well done. Did you build caravans previously 😂
Thank you! There’s a small chance I may have 😂
Checkerplate..
checkerplate ..
what checkerplate?
It looks great.😊
Thanks!
Always great work Guys. Deadlines are a motivator. You will make it no worries as I think you used to build caravans for a job? I am waiting for the one episode to start where you have been using so much silicone that one of the family is stuck to the side of the van. Keep it up. Learning a lot. Thanks.
😂😂 cheers!
Great work been following whole caravan restoration love the new look best place to have all checkerplate for protection ❤
Thanks!
I like the TIG welding with your finger in silicone lol
😂😂
Joys of working on old stuff . Mark how far the j mould goes around ur trim then find the mitre that will give u ur cut mate
👍🏻
Bertha looking really great! You're both doing a fantastic job. You must be soooo looking forward to heading off again in your "new" abode!? Well done!! 👏👏👏
Sooo looking forward to it!
Thanks 🙌🏼
Turps is great on cut fingers. Yeeeeooow 😬
J mould is definitely easier to fit on flat walls. You're doing a great job there, team.
Anyone watching would think you've built caravans in the past. 😂😂😂
Cheers guys.
Thanks so much!
People keep assuming that! 😂
Great work on the caravan ✌️
🙌🏼
kerry doing good job
🙌🏼
I used a little stainless steel wire wheel attached to the drill to clean up under the J moulds. Messy but effective. Just didn’t go full speed and took my time.
Lookin good mate.
🙌🏼
The things like that which take big time with little to go "Ta-da" over, are the days I hate on projects. Some of the most important but unseen, like changing brake pads, hope the other side went on easier 👍
So true!!
Great work its really looking good❤
And you need to run silicone over the screws inside the J mould underneath the rubber the whole length through to prevent leaking
Stay tuned 😉
Looks great guys. Killa job 🤙
Cheers!
Good trick I learnt from a repairer in wa . Get a piece of Perspex and grind an edge on a grinder so that it’s sharpish and you can use it like a chisel and it won’t scratch the paint on the cladding. Chris from Western Australia. The checker plate will have the car in front so I don’t think it’s going be much of a problem.
That’s a great tip! Will definitely try it
J mould is the Achilles heel of a caravan and can be the source of water ingress. So interesting to see you two installing yours! Well done
Agreed! Cheers 👍🏻
Slowly getting there, the key is you are doing it right first time so can enjoy your travels later
🙌🏼 cheers
it looks awesome, done a great job. i agree with the wife about the sun reflection on the front. wear a scrappy shirt and overalls then wipe your fingers on them. save you so much time. lol
i drilled my finger just like you did while fixing some aluminium trim to a window. the drill bit snapped and the rest of the bit in my drill went into my finger. i bled like a stuck pig and in agony i thick it touched the bone. I used to build houses lol,
Ouch!! 😣
Thanks! 😁
front looks great much nicer than original
yes there is paint you can paint it with ,some trucks have silver polished bull bars they dont affect other road users
Cheers!
Alex what happen to your build series catch phase “I use to build caravans”. You had plenty of opportunity during this weeks ep. Keep up the great work, watching you guys is always a great way to start the week.
I thought I’d try to not say it for a week and see what people say 😂
great job guys looking so damn cool
Thanks!
@@nowornever_aus also never knew turps when using silicon. I have always just had a wet cloth next to me which gets it off and also any little oooppsies lol.
I was the guy screaming at the screen telling you how to work out the angle 📐 lol 😂
😂😂
First up great job. 👍. But I do think painting the plate is a good idea. If you use a thicker product like raptor then it will have some shock absorbing qualities for stones hitting.
Hey guys, good job. I don't know what you're using to scrape off the old silicone. But if you're already not try sharpening up some strip's of perspex. Works a treat and doesn't scratch the powder coat on the cladding as bad.
Cheers, Billy D.
Thanks!
For your checker plate why don't you get a enlargement of your YT channel logo and with the right kind of backing fix it to the top part and center of your checker plate. Maybe something 700mm round. Might look good and break it up a bit. Maybe add a 150mm black line across the bottom of the checker plate near the draw bar. The whole job looks good but needs a bit of a visual tickle.
Very good idea. Like it 😊
Thanks! I like this idea 👍🏻
The van is looking good guys. Well done. Cheers Judy
Thanks!
Wow, you guys are inspirational and are a great working team together 🥰
Thank you 🙌🏼
Try using disposable latex gloves, it will make clean up easier and save your skin 👍
Cheers
thanks for showing the hard parts as they happen.
😁🙌🏼
I think you guys are doing an amazing job, well done! If I am being totally honest with you, as I am sure you would want us to, I think the upper front section of the checker plate needs breaking up somehow. I don't like the idea of painting it as I feel that may end up more maintenance in time. How about something like your Maxtrax being mounted on that section to break it up? Something black may well be your best option. There is probably plenty of other things that could be used. Just have a think I guess. Great work and all the best.
Thank you and they are some great suggestions!
Good job guys
Don’t feel deflated - it’s all part of the process and you’ll be super happy with the result once you’re back on the road, and you certainly won’t be worried about leaks! Almost there….
Won’t spoil your next vid, but I did something similar with our van… you will not regret it.
Cheers!
You might be able to spray the front with Raptor coat, pretty sure it comes in white
Great job guy's 👏
🙌🏼
Nice work really starting to good.
I feel your pain Erin. The life of a tradie assistant wifevis not easy. However yove done an awesome job and Bertha looks fab
Thank you!
Keep up the great work guys. Love watching you keep it real. Looking forward to the next installment
Thanks!
Best way for angles, is angle finder then halve it. So a 30⁰ angle take 15⁰ either side. That will be 90⁰ over the 2 angles, so 45⁰ each then halve it to 22.5⁰ and thats your angle haha
Thank you!
Acid wash the alloy with Ali king then cover with nyalic
We love your work!
Yeah, lucky not going off quickly, but silicone doesn't stick well to turpentine residue on metal surface.
Basically van manufacturers use minimal sealant and hardly any surface prep
I think your shed could be called Silicon Valley :}
😂
Keep the Faith ! Ive just bought a 200k Motorhome and the Silicone on that isn’t perfect. It never will be . They aint Ferraris they are boxes on a chassis 👍🏻keep smiling
Too true! Thanks!
Big square led tail lights
It is great to see the progress your making on Bertha. Can't wait to see her back on the road. I have a question about the icheck tpms. In the next school holidays we are travelling on a road trip from Brissie to the Yarra Valley in our 30 year old van, Beryl. It is a dual axle, I was looking at the IC008 as I don't see why I would need to put a tpms on the spare tyres. I would appreciate your thoughts.
Thanks!
Definitely no need as such with the spare but like the other tyres better to know you have an issue with your spare before you are in a situation where you really need it 👍🏻
What an amazing video. The best one so far. So raw, authentic and real. Alec bro the reason I reckon the drill hit you because you forgot to share your mantra "I used to build caravans!" Lol ... When you mentioned Jesus that excited me so now I am praying for you both, your children and the successful Reno of your baby BERTHA. I trust you enjoyed the footy. Not sure which footy though. You didn't say.Have a most outstanding week, keep up the good work.
Thank you!! 🙌🏼
It’s NRL for us! 😁
@@nowornever_ausI’m a Blues Supporter for State of Origin yay 🎉 And Manly all the way ❤
self praise is no recommenedation mate. but your doing an excellent job. anyone would think you used to build caravans. hahaha
If my experience is anything to go by with your Truma AC is, don't get too attached to it. They seem to like to fail prematurely, ours died at 4 years old. Another negative is they don't like producing heat below 7 degrees Celsius. One good thing is it'll be loads lighter than what you have.
Everything else is looking pretty good though.
Yes I have heard some bad things about them but there are loads out there so it seems to be a small percentage, fingers crossed ours goes alright!
@@nowornever_aus Hopefully you have better luck than we did. Good luck.
Thanks guys, keep on keeping on. 30:10 is that a bow in the J-moulding above Erin's head?
Most likely mate, the cladding on the roof is very wavey 👍🏻
You can always paint checker plate. She’ll be right.
I have a Billabong checker plate just comes up to the boot .it a problem when driving into the sun reflection is bad
Good one
Great episode.. still a bit to do....
Sure is! Thanks
Just wrap the they plate till u like like it
Awesome Ep and work guys. Just wondering why you did not use Galvo screws or S/s ones to hold the skirting on.
Just going off what I thought we used when I used to build caravans 👍🏻
I don’t understand why the caravan industry refers to it as J mould, it’s clearly not, it’s a capping
J mould slips over a panel, or it does in the building industry 🤔
The van is looking great though, well done👍
J mold - as in Jayco 😂
I assume the name just comes from it looking like a j on the side profile
Cheers!
Paint the checkerplate black ⚫️
Paint at least some of the checkerplate, cut or in half at least. Did you not used to build caravans? 😉
😂 I did!
reflection when driving.
Is it possible to put a window in the top part of the checker plate? Just a thought
Yes but not with our layout as the washing machine and cupboards sit right behind the front panels
Hi , so I’ve gone from not knowing what a J mould actually is to knowing how to fit one in just a few short weeks. Thanks
😁
'I feel like an amateur doing this' - but I thought you used to build caravans 🤔😁😉😂😂😂😋
Oh no, I think you did a great job and I feel a bit mean for this comment.
😂 all good we knew what you meant 👌🏼
What is the molding you just put on and where can I get some please great work
It’s J mould and we got it from ulrich aluminium 👍🏻
LOL You need a holiday after all of this.....
We do! 😂
Dose anyone know alex used to build caravans??
Looks great, just one question though do you place any silicone over the screw heads before placing the rubber strip into the J mould? I have a 2 year old van with a slight leak and have found silicone over the screw heads and the rubber strip has joins across the top that may be the source of the leak.
Sure do, we’ll touch on that next ep 👌🏼
Good job guys, well done, I like the way you are decisive. You can buy the small flay head tech screws gal plated, it would have been better and not much more expensive. Then I saw them in the back checker plate. Equal angles one side won't be longer, it looked like about a 30 deg. angle.
Cheers mate!
Biggest reno cost....silicone! 100% the worst part of a reno!! Loved the vid!
What microphone are you guys using? Looks so discreet but the sound is great guys 👌
Thanks!
We use DJI mic which are great when you remember to turn them on! 😂
@@nowornever_aus 😂 well it sounded clear if you didn't put it on! Can't wait to see you all back on the road!
If it reflects too much sun just rub it with scotch bright pad.
Great idea! Cheers
I think you guys did a donald trump with tomato sauce so that you could do a commercial for the first aid kit, lol😂😂😂
🤣🤣 love it!
Wow. By any chance did you use to build caravans😂😂
I may have…. 😂
Poor a beer on it shele? be right
😂
If you would like some help, I’d love to give u a hand
Thanks!
What a sh#t job but it's coming along very nicely.
Well done.
Cheers!
Come on wifey look after your husband
She looks after me extremely well 😁
Too much
