Having done 100km plus races, totally agree that flat out speed is usually sacrificed for "easier" paddling in a more stable boat. Congrats on a big effort! Every race I have been in like that you need to be lifted out of the boat at the end!!
Great video, we have some ultra distance races on rivers with a current in my area. An often used boat is a Stellar S18S Surfside or an epic V8. Both are stable and are usually faster than touring kayaks. Any videos of that race you did?
Thanks! I was using the same wing paddle for the race as the practice laps, i.e. a small epic. There are typically a few Greenland paddles around the race, but it is indeed a slow paddle so never even close to the top distances. But this race is mostly a race for yourself, and if you prefer the Greenland then by all means you're welcome!
machoneboard the Taran here is fast, but I dare say it is far from the fastest. There are some hybrid sea kayaks which definitely should be faster, simply look for 6+ meters with a race kayak type hull. I have yet to paddle a Greenland kayak, but I don't expect them to be faster. The lower volume will take less wind but also move around considerable amounts of water in rough sea. And I am convinced that a rudder is necessary to effectively keep a straight course in various winds.
