  • Common swift (Apus apus) is an unusual bird, after watching the video you will see why it is so special. It can be said that it is the king of all birds. Visually close to a swallow, it has very little to do with it. It is larger, has a brown-black color, crescent-shaped wings, and a characteristic, forked tail. However, it is not his appearance but his lifestyle that makes him unusual.

    King of the skies
The Swift is the king of all birds when it comes to endurance in flight. This bird is very fast. It can leave the nest at a speed of 70 km per hour and, diving in the air, reaches a speed of 220 km per hour. This is much higher than the speed limit for cars on highways. Its long-distance flights, one of its major characteristics, stop only during the breeding season, when it looks after its chicks and stays less often in the air. Apart from this period, summer is practically non-stop. "Without interruption" can be safely taken as a literal term, because the Swift can stay in the air continuously for up to 200 days. The record time without landing was 10 months; a completely unlikely result. How can Swifts cope with hunger and fatigue in the air?
Swifts belong to the group of migratory birds. They live in southern Africa in winter and the breeding season, which falls from March to June, is found in Europe and parts of Asia.
    Canteen under the clouds
Swifts feed on small flying insects, catching them in flight. Their menu includes mosquitoes, beetles, small species of butterflies and flies...

I've never heard of them before, Never. But they live in my area i thought it was swallows considering the similarities. This morning one was on my balcony and couldn't fly out of it, The walls on my balcony aren't short enough not to mention their short legs. So i helped it out although it was really in a hurry to get out of there, Im surprised it didn't try to peck me or make any loud noises but it flew off happy once i got it high enough on the balcony such a majestic looking bird. I made sure it was alright beforehand.

4 years ago i had the honour to raise a week year old that fell from a high unreachable nest, had it for about to months then when it was the season to imigrate, left it to fly with the others, taking care of a bird can be a challenge, but it taught me a lot

I read many years ago, in a Time Life collection book, that the common swift was the fastest flying bird on level, and many people think it's the peregrine falcon, but that is while diving. But horizontally, it's the common swift.

Saw one close two weeks ago. My nephew took care of him. I usually don't like birds, but swifts have great personalities.

Today was my last day at my university. We have flocks of them constantly in flight everywhere on campus. Sometimes I stop to watch them and wonder at how they never seem to land. So today I did just that then decided to google if they ever do land and here I am watching this video! I certainly hope I get to see one up close someday. Their calls during sunset are also very unique, I just love hearing them and knowing it will be dark soon.

Amazing creature, the swift. When I first learned at school about them sleeping on the wing, I couldn't believe it. For some reason, even the fact they can stay in the air for months at a time, didn't blow me away as much as sleeping while in flight.

They are my favourite bird. I used to live in the south of Spain but now in the south of England. There are none here. I have put up a swift box high on a north wall and hope they will nest here.
