An Unfinished Story on Gilmore Girls

  • This is a video on Tristin Dugray from Gilmore Girls. Tristin appeared in season 1 of the show and had one cameo appearance in season 2. His function was to primarily serve as a "bad boy" character to Dean's "good boyfriend" character. While a lot of Tristin's actions are terrible, there are plenty of Tristin fans. I wanted to explore why people like Tristin and why I liked him when I first watched the show.
    Chad Michael Murray left the show for other pursuits so the show writers had to quickly wrap up his character arc and they incorporated some of his plotline into Jess Mariano. Some fans have also argued that some of Tristin's character was incorporated into Logan Huntzberger's character.

      I can't help but agree. I like their interactions when Tristin is being good and I also like the scenes where Rory is annoyed with Tristin. I feel like Alexis Bledel gets flak for her acting sometimes, but I think she did a really good job playing someone who is ticked off at Tristin. The actors did have chemistry together and the scenes worked really well.

      It is interesting how much perception changes on rewatches. On my first watch, I think it was easier for me to like Tristin because there was this element of excitement, wondering where his character will go. On rewatches, I understand why so many people don't like Tristin because we know that Tristin's character doesn't go anywhere.

    I always wondered how Rory's development would have been affected with his inclusion. Also, just in general dropped plotlines bc of departing actors always fascinate me.
    The one I always wonder about this show is if Adam Brody's character, Dave Rygalski, hadn't left the show, how would Lane's development be impacted?
    I love to imagine Lane would have gotten more screentime or at least more satisfying plot points but probably not tbh

      Dave Rygalski is another character that I really want to cover. Is it bad to say that I'm not optimistic that the show would have given Lane better plotlines even if Dave had stayed? They might have destroyed his character or their relationship if he had stayed. This comment is coming off really critical. 😖I'm not attacking the writers. I get that they have to create drama in order to make a show interesting.

      @PensiveWhiskers 😭 At least her baby daddy wouldn't have been Zack 🤢
      Seriously though this show treated Lane so badly it's not even funny. First her band loses out in having a successful career. Then Lane has sex ONCE and immediately becomes pregnant and has to give up on all of her dreams to raise her kids with ZACH 🤮🤮
      There's a Madtv parody of this show that surprisingly accurately makes fun of the way Lane's character is neglected by the show, especially as the series goes on. Sometimes it just seemed like her purpose was to be there for Rory, rather than exist as a unique character.
      And yeah there's a good chance the writers would have assasinated Dave's character out of nowhere like this show likes to do to create drama, but atleast Lane would gave gotten another episode or two of happiness with him 😭

      I think the gg writers were never good when it came to couples, only rory and dean for like two seconds, but it was a lot more interesting the whole will-they-wont-they? on the romances (Luke and lorelai for example, the two were a lot more interesting before becoming a couple or the most obvious, jess and rory, he literally does the craziest things just so he can spend time with rory only for them to not have screen time when they finally get together and only have bad moments, the black eye, the dean fight, the Saturday night thing, etc) I think with Dave and lane it would've been the same, but with less emphasis on any of the story bc they (writers) never cared for lane's story and they suck for that

    • @PensiveWhiskers
      @PensiveWhiskers  Před 4 měsíci +2

      I love the brutal honesty. I also think the GG writers didn't want couples happy (except for Babette & Morey). I think it might be because it's a lot harder to create good drama with happy couples than unhappy couples. I think it's possible to write a happy couple while still keeping the audience's interest but it's a lot more challenging so that results in relationships that have a lot of issues.

    I'm one of those shippers! Rory's dance was the first episode I ever watched, and when I saw him giving the longing look, I thought, "Oh I hope he gets the girl." It was years before I saw the beginning of the show when I got the series on DVD. I used to think he could have come back after military school, reformed. But I let that idea go. This show doesn't do character development for characters who are around for more than a guest appearance. It isn't great on continuity, either.
    More recently, I've been thinking he was just supposed to be like the asshole character in an 80's teen movie, but this show can't help but have all the guys fall for Rory. I still write Tristan/Rory fanfiction. Their high school background is a good trope for romance plots. I always thought he was redeemable, and that he's not bad to the core. I'm open to liking unlikable characters if they give me a reason (bad parents is the go-to Save the Cat move for this show; it's the signal that we're supposed to sympathize with the character now; frankly, it got old). I also like to see potential love interests not get along. It's more interesting to me. That's just how I like my fiction.

    • @PensiveWhiskers
      @PensiveWhiskers  Před 4 měsíci

      Hey! I also feel like Tristin was modeled after the high school jerk trope. I like unlikeable characters that change over time or that clearly decide to be the villain and play the bad guy really well. The show does lean heavily into "bad parents" as a background for a lot of characters. I just figured that the show picked generational trauma as the overarching theme and so incorporated that theme into a lot of the characters. I could see how that would be frustrating for a lot of people, as it's a similar background.

    First thank you for covering the show, I was kinda shocked how little there is about it on youtube and it's awesome to see someone go more in depth and these character pieces had been great so far. Girlmore girls had always been kinda special show for me, when I was teen it was only show I could watch with my mom that wouldn't drive the other one crazy and it became lifelong comfort show I rewatch every few years, especially earlier seasons. I guess I've been watching it for so long I grew up from having crush on Rory (I swear I can't tell why now...) to having crush on Lorelai (I know exactly why, I'm looking forward when you get to her to see if you might have the same theory I've been having for a while now)
    With that background out of the way to Tristin. I used to hate Tristin when I was younger until I realised he's perfect "fun to hate" character, a lot thanks to being so well acted. I think Logan also intentionally started out as seemingly very similar character. Sure with more thought and class but the thing of note is that Logan is also few years older and my theory is that in Tristin's age it's pretty likely Logan could've been very similar. It's not that hard to see Logan as Tristin that grew up, especially given the arc Tristin's character went through while on the show and I see it have been discussed here that could've been the plan if they were able to get the actor back. Let me go with different fun to imagine alternate version of the show then. What if Tristin came back but as Logan's foil instead, changed through the harsh military school experience and remorseful of his previous actions... or more likely as even greater brat given that's the usual thing that happens when someone is punished and traumatised even more in attempts to correct bad behaviour. Either way it probably would be more fun to watch than clumsy attempts to have "nice guy" Marty as Logan's foil instead.

I have a feeling that the show wouldn't have liked that direction because of fear that the audience would perceive them as similar but I would have liked to see it. I would be curious to see how Tristin turned out after his military school experience.

If I was the writer, I would have made him get into more trouble and in that downward spiral, he would have started to recognize the path that he was on. Since Rory is the protagonist, it's likely the show would have gone the other direction since he is a tertiary character and his character arc would have to tie back to Rory. @@OfficialSTJones Yeah, I don't really consider that the ending. They promised the opposite for so long (how many times did Rory and Lorelai insist Rory wouldn't get pregnant? They insisted she really was the great white hope. They promised and promised she'd go out into the world), just to slap us in the face at the end.
      I really don't even look at it from the perspective of the ending. I've always looked at it from season 4. It's just so obvious they didn't have a love life for Rory that year and made a desperate attempt to piece together something for her in the second half of the season-she told Dean goodbye at the end of season three, Jess was supposed to be on his own show. It was so piecemeal I was really confused why she was falling onto her bed with Dean.
      That was the same year CMM started One Tree Hill. Then Logan was so similar. Just seemed like that was the time Tristan should have returned for a new plot arc.
      I felt validated at Logan's first appearance (I knew why he was there), but then depressed because it wasn't just that CMM was unavailable. Tristan would have been redundant.

      @@nicoleb3371 to be completely honest with you, season 4 is personally my favorite and the only thing that completely ruined that season for me was the Dean storyline. I liked that she was single and struggling with dating. It seemed realistic. They could have had Rory do so many great things and meet a different new guy or keep her single for season 5 but the Dean storyline ruined going in a positive direction with Rory, at least that season. You have great point that they kept insisting she wouldn’t get pregnant to the point where they made it clear that pregnancy grossed her out when Sookie had her baby after Lorelai and Rory went to throw her a baby shower. I had heard the show runner talk about the final four words even back then and she said she had that plan from the beginning so I found that interesting. I agree, Tristan just wouldn’t have been a good character if he’d stayed.

    • @nicoleb3371
      @nicoleb3371 Před 4 měsíci +1

      @@OfficialSTJones Yes, the final four words were "planned from the beginning" or whatever. The showrunner also pouted about the series not ending how she wanted because Rory was supposed to go out on a big adventure "which she sort of was" with the season seven ending.
      I don't mind that Rory was single and struggling in S4. They just don't do anything constructive with it. She never considered doing anything else. She didn't have to write outside her comfort zone on the paper. Did she have to make up the class she dropped? Her struggles were only used to push her into Dean's arms.
      And when I think Tristan should have come back in season four, I wouldn't necessarily want them to get together too early. He'd have to work for it. I always thought he'd have to act right and develop, be decent so it would make sense to the audience.
      I think making Logan's dad a big shot newspaper guy was a shortcut. Those of us who were waiting for Tristan were frustrated. Like, you want this guy? Thought he wasn't your type.

    I liked the show more without Tristan, but I think Rory would have treated him just as badly as she treated Dean, Jesse, Logan, and Paul if they got together, which seemed to be where the writers wanted to head before Chad Michael Murruy got _One Tree Hill_ and other recurring TV Shows and movie roles that took his time away from _Gilmore Girls._ And that's why it could feel like Tristan's unfinished story was broken up into other characters.

    In my opinion I think that Logan is a good example of who Tristan could've been, they're both very similar characters in my opinion and Logan's essentially like a bitter version of Tristan, Logan still has his floors and I still have issues with him as a character, but if you comparing him to Tristan he is definitely the bitter version although they are both very similar characters.

      That's a good question. I always assumed that Chad Michael Murray officially left at the end of season 1 but then agreed to come back for one episode and the show writers worked around his schedule, which is why Tristin's departure is randomly placed in episode 9. Now that you raise this question, I could see the show filming episode 9 much earlier but then placing it later in the season so that it doesn't look too conspicuous that Tristin is passing the torch to Jess.

    Another reason people like Tristan is the actor and I'm not saying he's cute I mean he is, it's Hollywood so he couldn't be ugly but my point is that him and the dude from Cruel intentions are the only actors I've really seen pull off this kind of role oh and the third and final love interest from Crazy Ex Girlfriend. I've always been curious what could have happened if he stayed I like the idea that if he had him and Rory never wind up dating and are friends. You know you should do a video on Lane and her relationship with... You know her band mate guy who got her pregnant I'm sorry I can't remember his name, I say this because as I imagined Tristan staying in the show I imagined him meeting other characters like Lane and I couldn't help but think 'Tristian and Lane would be cute two characters who have nothing in common and never share a scene together have to better than the guy Lane did wind up with' and I know I'm not the only one who doesn't really like that guy... Tristan's boy school bullying tactic to get Rory's attention isn't THAT aggressive, her life wasn't in danger lol. He was making passing comments/teasing to get her to go out with him, which is normal behaviour for school boys to get girls attention. I'm not saying it's the right thing to do, or excusing a fictional characters actions, but it's something that will always happen, can't be regulated and/or worked on... unlike Dean's creepy stalker behavior!!! And the ownership he feels he 'has' over Rory, which Tristan doesn't. Even in the way they both kiss Rory shows how different their characters are. Dean tricks her by distraction, and kissed her by surprise, which is something someone does to later on into dating, not the first kiss!! When Tristan kissed her, he showed Rory he wanted to kiss her, checking more than three times how she was responding with her body language, confirmed she wanted to and then did it. Which is the actual right way to go about kissing someone for the first time. What Dean's kiss meant is that he wants to be in control and puts his desires he has onto her, not caring about hers, because she is a 'pure girl', who could never want the same things he does, whereas Tristan treats the girls in physical intimate moments very respectfully. But people would definitely disagree with me because Tristan wants to have sex with Rory, while Dean wants to keep her a virgin, and that is more respectful to people, but I don't think that is, it's gross. It gives off the idea that sex will corrupt your mind, especially girls, but I doubt that if Rory had sex with one of her boyfriend's in highschool that her grades will suffer, that's just stupid and sexist. Whatever someone else did (her mum), you cannot tell teenage girls what they can do with their sexual bodies, don't tell them to abstain from sex, educate them on practicing safe sex instead. Anyway the moral is, Dean is an obsessive sexist stalker, Jess is a purposeful asshole, and Logan is an unloving toxic mess. #teamtristan #redemptionarc
