very carefully

*IS THIS WILL BE THE FIRST EVER 1 MILLION SUBSCRIBERS CHESS CHANNEL?*
I ran into all 3 ideas but hit dead ends in my head only to find out the actual solution was essentially all 3 ideas combined. Beautiful stuff!
My first thought was to sacrifice the knight and queen to tie up the position going [(1) Nc2+, Rxc2 (2) Qxb4+, Bxb4 (3) Rd1, Qxd1 (4) axb4#] but soon realized the Rd1 move could simply be countered by sacrificing the queen, playing b3. Giving the king an escape and being up material. So after about another 40 minutes and a lot of dead end ideas I'm pretty sure the actual solution is [(1) Qxb4+, Bxb4 (2) Rd2, Qxd2 (3) Nc2+, Qxc2 (4) axb4#] Rook to D2 forces the queen to take as the bishop taking leads to knight C2 checkmate and Rook takes leads to pawn capturing bishop checkmate which are both mate in 3. So that was a really neat force to get the queen off guarding B4

Wijk Aan zee starting tomorrow. Cant wait for agads coverage!
The most comprehensive treatise on Q sacs is “Queen Sacrifice[s]” by IM Yakov Neishstadt (1991, Pergamon Press, 252pp.) the renowned Soviet Correspondence Player, and chess journalist (editor of USSR periodicals Shakhmaty, “64” etc. ) and was also a prominent soviet event arbiter, awarded the prestigious Soviet title “Judge of the All-Union Category for Chess” now living in Israel he will turn 100 on 6 Oct 2023. I have also read, and highly recommend his other chess tactics treatise “Test Your Tactical Ability” (1991, Batsford 210pp.) a marvelous tour thru all the motifs and themes of chess combinations, from decoys, attractions, demolition, displacement, pins, blockings (as was used in this puzzle), to endgame “swindles” combinations to force stalemate in a lost position! Hundreds of examples, puzzles, and quizzes, and a “tactics final exam” chapter at the end! One cannot improve any faster than by going thru these two volumes!
Hey agadmator, queen to d3 also works- with the threat of pawn captures on b4 checkmate because the bishop is pinned , white’s only move is pawn to b3 and black captures with check, king b2, pawn captures on c3 with double check, king c1, queen to d1 check, queen captures, and rook captures on d1 is mate.
I think😅
Nice pronunciation on those Finnish names 👌🏻 Keep doing what you do Antonio
i actually got this puzzle while solving some in lichess.org but i didnt get it right at that time and saw the solution so i knew this position. its a really fun puzzle
One thing Antonio didn't mention is that Rd2 covers the b2 square, preventing white from creating an escape square by playing b3. This is the reason that it is the only move order that works. All the other threats I looked at, white can play b3 and get the king to b2.
I remember seeing this position in the book tactics for the advanced player by yuri averbakh, one of the coolest tactical book out there
My library is also my bar. I just bring a hip flask. much cheaper too.
Everybody looked at this Queen sacrifice but cant find continuation..
The continuation is a great brillancy
So ive found another 4 move mating sequence given white doesnt push B3
Its pawn takes pawn on b4
Bishop takes b4
Queen D3
And now if white blocks with bishop c3
Queen to C2 threatening mate in 1 so white rook takes on C2
Knight takes on C2 checkmate with a flashy queen sac ;)
Found it after trying axb4 first, but b3 after Rd7 was a dead end so I tried the other obvious move when we're talking about crazy puzzles which is Qxb4! And after 30min thinking I found Rd2!! Doesn't matter with which piece you take, it's mate. It took me a while to see that Rxd2 protecting Nc2 mate threat didn't work cause now axb4 is possible (Even though I had already seen Qxd2 didn't work cause Nc2+ and queen is overloaded, mind works in mysterious ways I guess).
That took forever, especially Rd2, but very happy to find it (gonna check the video in case I'm embarrassing myself with this post).
#suggestion. Agad, please cover the match between Bobby Fishcer and Boris Spassky that took place in 1992 (the time when Bobby came back)
@@drjoyrajghosh2271 Bobby was scared, he knew he would lose
You can solve this puzzle in a week or year or in two years
How about three years?
quite a high possibility. Took me an hour to get 5 lines and clearly there are many more
@@kiratsaluja3522 Now really think hard about this one. Four years?
There are only two forcing moves so it could take you an hour or less depending on your level
@@lp4969 You cleary didn't watch The Office xD
I think this puzzle is a demonstration of the technique shown in another video, where the rook protects from the knight mate, while the queen protects from the pawn mate, but when you force the queen to line up with the rook, then she's overloaded, being responsible for defending [but unable to respond to] both threats. Nice one!
There is one more thing I think you missed (but anyway a very interesting video, as always). Rd2 was an ingenious move not only because it messed up the connection between White's queen, bishop and the rook, but also because it would cut off king's escape route. Not accepting the rook by playing b3 and making room on the b2 square for white king doesn't work either.
I can't believe I found the queen sacrifice in like a minute... I must be my weird head always looking for queen sacrifices. That being said, I would have never found Rd2 (At first I thought of Rd3, close enough).
Yeah that continuation is INSANE
If you didn't find the full continuation then it doesn't mean much
@@CelestialAesthetics agreed
Dude most of us looked at the queen sacrifice first coz almost all the chess puzzles have a queen sac involved. Otherwise, how can it be a brilliant game lol. What matters is finding the continuation.
What does the "aa" stand for in the lower right of the video? Certain symbols like R (rapid) or C (classical) are easy to understand...but this one is a puzzle to me!
hmm.. I guess Antonio analysis 😂
No idea
That Rd2 reminds me of the "plachutta" by Tarrasch, you block the defense line of two pieces and then sacrifice another piece to double distract the Queen. Beautiful!
i love these puzzle videos. Hope you can make more puzzle videos

@@desmondlawson6589 i know, im joking
Lol! I thought the same... until I saw the rook in the second rank :D
The pawn on C4 is missed in the thumbnail, I invented my own puzzle LOL
Wow how did you even realized that?
@@hishamz4328 maybe he would have tried to solve in thumbnail
czcams.com/video/NZ9dQ2ASecM/video.html
At 4:28 doesn’t rook to e3 also deliver checkmate. If blocked with queen you take with rook and check and if knight takes you deliver checkmate with pawn.
Nvm because white pawn can be pushed up blocking and creating a escape square
Yeah, my friends at the bar and library were really impressed!
puzzles like this make me laugh and shake my head, smile and cry, die and live.
Agadmators pronounciation is so good. Im finnish and you pronounced their names like every finnish would say :D. What is your secret?
Križevci are Croatian town near Hungarian border. Finnish language belongs to Finno-Ugric group. Maybe Agadmator knows little bit of Hungarian, which are similar to Finnish. Or maybe I drank too much coffee today, it's 2:41 on the clock. Sorry 'bout that!

If everyone found these mates
Everyone would be atleast a International Master
i think a GM would have a hard time finding this
@ probably not
One thing is finding the moves, and the second thing is actually being able to play a solid game. I get the pause the video moments right almost all the time, but my chess is still terrible.
@@kubaskoupy I'll agree with that. It's generally quite a bit easier to find the best move in the pause the video moments than it is to find all the best moves required to get you there!
You can never know how much I look forward to your channel. Simply the best
crazy, i havent found many puzzles i didnt find the answer to beforehand. but i actually did not figure this one out, primarily due to the knight pulling the queen away on move 3. i completely missed that in all my calculations lol. but when that position was on the board i could see it instantly. thats the fundamental mind freak of calculating...

can you create a position of, for lack of a better phrase, coerced checkmate, where it is one side or the other's turn, and their only option or options result in checkmate?
I found the first move but didn’t quite know how to continue... 🤣

Yep, it's always sad to sac your queen and then lose the thread of the combination.
"You might have check queen to d2"....
did anyone even consider that move?lol...that's a hard ass move to see
@@CStoph1979 Tal approves of this comment
I thought it was a fairly natural thing to consider. With the rook being the only piece defending against Nc2, you would of course look to see if you could block or dislodge it.
I paused the video for a bit and I actually figured this one out! This is such a great puzzle

WAIT WHAT ABOUT NC2
Is that not just mate????
Nevermind
There is a rook on h2 lol
Exactly my thoughts as well. Also didn't see the rook on h2..

Yay they are finnish people like I am! Btw Juha Kasanen was a chess composer and one of the creators of the chess engine Shy which was competing in The Fourth World Computer Chess Championship 1983.
I actually found it! That too rather quickly... I was thinking on the similar lines as explained...the possiblity of Nc2 mate, what happens after Qd2 etc.... Then BAM came the move
I understood that either the N or pawn delivers cm but I didn't realise how to deflect the queen or block the rook. But the first move I knew but the continuation was a bit beyond me. But a fantastic puzzle.

Rd2 might be one of the most amazing moves I've ever seen
Happily i made a chess club a week ago and now we are 12 members your channel is a big support keep going
There is a bar underneath the library next to the supermarket where I live here outside Barcelona. All very well organised.
This is beautiful, it all came down to dislodge that queen from diagonal and at the same time block the line of sight of the h2 rook
This is, by far, the most beautiful puzzle/mate I've ever seen.
The theme of giving many choices of capture, each one of which blocks some figure from enabling checkmate - classic, beauty.
I did not found it and had not patience :)
Your pronounciation of the Finnish names is actually near perfect, I am very impressed
It kinda seems that you don't have silent letters and that 1 letter = 1 phoneme, correct me if I'm wrong. But if it's true than its really similar to Croatian pronunciation.
Yeah, almost all Finnish words are pronounced that way (there is basically only 1 exeption: "ng" is pronounced as one phoneme)
love your channel and how in-depth yet approachable it is! At the bar and at the library indeed!
Reminds me of the plashutta you showed with Tarrash
That's a nice puzzle. I also spent a lot of time looking at 1...Qd3. This also threatens axb4# by pinning the bishop, but unfortunately white can deal with this
My chess teacher showed us this puzzle couple years ago, Rd2! I remembered this killer move after seeing the miniature. Great puzzle
