Thanks for having me Trogs!
BRAVO
Awesome! Good to see you here on Troglys channel! You’re a killer guitarist and your content is great! Thanks.
Hi Samurai, you rock!
Awesome to see you both collab two of my favorite CZcamsrs. Awesome man.. still hate the reverse flying fee for the passion. But awesome to see you guys doing video any other anyway.
This was an awesome collab!
It is great to see my former guitar featured on the channel! Well done Trogly!
It's gone man.....Let it go, shake it off.
@@jameslanclos568 nice comment John Clark, we understand what you mean in your, good to see your former guitar on the show" we know that you let it go when u sold it. Some people are just fools and can't help saying shitty shit from the shithole under their nose.
@@jameslanclos568 ~ Try & have a little class, JL - fake it if you have to...
@@jameslanclos568 Douche much? I'm thinking....yes
I was part of the design team for the GOTW program. This model was specifically brought up by Henry, the pres of Gibson. When we launched the original as part of the GOTW program, the reverse V was the first to "sell out" at the NAMM show. My memory tells me that they sounded GREAT! The 2nd run came in q4 of that year because of the re-sale value on Ebay.
DSRV: Designer Series Reverse V.
Got any fun stories you’d like to share behind the Gotw series? austin@troglysguitarshow.com
Hi Kevin, I’m an aspiring product designer who would love to specialize on guitar design. I wanted to ask you, how did you manage to apply to work for Gibson? It would be a dream of mine to work for a guitar company like Gibson of Fender.
@@kebab_boi Every Gibson designer has a degree form Case Western Reserve Universtiy. So start there. Then they require 4-5 years of experience with smaller makers, right now Indonesia is a great place for luthier internships. After those years they like someone with a specialty in colors (yeah it’s a real thing). An associates degree is fine here. The application process requires something like a portfolio. So send them 2-3 guitars as examples, almost no one gets these back which is kind of lame. Then you fight against the others for interviews, it’s best to be aggressive with calls and e-mails to get noticed a bit. Anyway. Good luck hope to meet you here one day.
@@boblabahh4893 holy moly, thank you so much for the insight and advice! This helps a lot, seriously thank you! 🤍
I just realized that a double-V with horns on both sides is the "missing shape" that should be in the catalog. It would be large, but awesome.
That would be amazing.
The Flying X
A Dean flying Y aka Dimebag
@@coreycann6751 nah that's the ml and it only has 3 horns
Bootsy had one made for him.
I never comment but when you did the mouse pointer thing at 1:42 I realized this is what makes Trogly the best, humor and that extra mile, the pointer IS the guitar, thanks for that extra mile Trog, it makes all the difference, don't think for one second we don't notice and it's not worth it, we do, and it is....
King gizz is touring with one of these and stu seems to be a GOTW fan having rocked the holy explorer on previous tours; would love to confirm this and have a trogs collab lmao
Just got back home(outside philly) after following the tour from NYC->Asheville. Stu seems to love him some weird guitars. Right now he's going between this, the Banana and the Yammy Flying Samurai. Cookie has been rocking a Meteora recently too.
Pretty much every guitar in that band makes my jaw drop. They have impeccable taste
He was playing crumbling castle in his playing demo!
This is a dream collab. Over a stunning instrument no less.
DS=Designer Series, the category the Vs and Explorers and Firebirds fell under that.
I never played one, but it looks like it is easier to play sitting down than the non reverse. The long tennon is a nice touch.
When I worked at Gibson the "DS" stood for designer series. Same for most of the shapes other then les paul and ag. Firebird, explore etc.
i recently saw elton john in concert, and his guitarist, whose name i can’t remember for the life of me, brought one out for a couple songs, along with a couple other very cool unique gibsons. would love to see that whole collection
stu from king gizzard and the lizard wizard plays one on stage!
I had one (second gen). And stupidly sold it. You're quite right: it played like a dream. Compact and fun to jam on sitting down.
This collab is awesome! You guys are awesome together, great video!!!
Awesome seeing you guys collaborate! Love this!
I love the reverse explorer the best I think. The headstock is my favorite and it looks more comfortable
Great video as always - I have one of the original Trans Amber ones and to your point it is one of the last ones made of the first run but has an early 2008 serial.
the collab we didn’t know we needed
Can you do an episode on the 1st Gen Robot Guitar Les Paul? I just picked one up and love this quirky thing haha. I thought it was gonna be that when I read the title.
Rick Nielsen played the “third”variation of the flying V on Conan O’Brian in ‘96, check out the Cheap Trick footage of Cold Turkey… amazing performance, killer sounding guitar.
With GOTM Reverse V, I suspect the missing 3 pots (and wiring) has more of an effect on the "unique" tone than the wood. But this sounds great and looks great!
On a isde note - KK's flying V sold for over $200k when he auctioned his guitar collection off.
I'm partial to the "Fireman" when it comes to flipped guitar designs.
so nice of you letting a small and indie youtuber on your channel, bet this really helps him out 🙏🙏🙏🙏
That headstock and tuning stability. Match made in heaven.
Very unique guitar! I don't know if I would ever buy one but in some ways it'd be neat to have. I really liked the tones and sounds on this guitar especially the neck pickup. Fun episode Trogly!
I just want to point out how much Trogly has improved as a player! This was one of the best playing demos I've heard from him!
Love both channels
Thank you Austin for an eye opening review, awesome as usual.
I prefer this headstock over the V shape headstock, however the V shape headstock would work on the reverse flying V.
Salutations Austin!
It’s too bad that they just didn’t use the standard Flying V headstock, which, in my opinion could not be improved upon.
Of course an Explorer headstock would have been the next most practical design from Gibson, on such a guitar. Unfortunately, Gibson chose the least practical design, much like the Moderne headstock.
It sounds great though. And it was awesome that you collaborated on this video, an occasional guest star is great to keep us all on our toes.
Thank you for posting these videos!
Please have an excellent and awesome day! ☀️✨
Fun fact about the Judas Priest backstory:It is somewhat true but I got Mr Glen(I hate Gibson)Fricker speechless when he ranted about bad looking guitars and showing a reverse V and right after that some footage of Judas Priest being a great band.I pointed that part of history of this guitar to him and he could only say he thought it was ugly.
For me,I just don't like the V shape,I'm more of an explorer type of guy 😁
Just bought the white, and had one back in 08, both with 57s
I really wasn't sure what I thought of the reverse Flying v's up until now but after watching tonight's episode, I am somewhat interested. I don't know if I would purchase one because I would in all likelihood have to buy one online where you can't try it first. Anyway, it was a fun episode. Thanks!
I like dark rosewood. I have a Firebird Zero(I know) that has a super dark rosewood fretboard and it's my favorite
I was thinking it’d sound metal-ish until you played the sitar sounding parts…
I’m sure Ravi and George could’ve had a time with one of these! Oh yeah!
The Priest parts sounded great!
Cool review!
Both. You need rosewood and Ebony! You can tell us if it sounds or feels any different. Thank you!
Was not expecting to hear Crumbling Castles in the tone demo! Always love to hear some King Gizzard!
I saw Carole Pope and Rough Trade play in the 80's . . their guitarist had a reverse V. I can't find a picture though, anyone out there got one?
I was always curious if these were neck heavy or not. cool to know they're not bad.
Absolutely gorgeous ' that rich mahogany, definitely dark RW board ' superb.
First saw & heard about the guitar due to sami g’s video about it and I instantly liked since it’s quite odd haha and I’ve always liked standard flying v’s so it makes sense.
I love how much recognition trogly has been getting and by Sammyg too?! You've been my favorite CZcams channel for the past few years and you're what pushed me to buy my first guitar after so many years of wanting to play. keep of the great work trogdor!
Trying to get one of the naturals from 2nd run now.
I JUST SAW THE SAMURAIGUITARIST LOGO AND KNEW WHAT WAS COMING. IS THIS THE GREATEST CROSSOVER OR WHAT
Pretty slick dean head stock if you ask me
The guy that sold the patent to Gibson. Worked for bc rich guitars custom shop and started making guitars he made one for my friend in 1984-85 I played the first ever inverted Flying V guitar it was a richillue guitar beautiful
That was a M. Knight Shyamalan level plot twist with that intro. Had me second guessing what I clicked on. Bravo. 👏🏼
I'm not into flying v guitars but this one screams mid century modern, which I do like. I'd like this color.
Thank you, I was actually planning on getting one soon, now they're probably going to go up on value
I saw King Gizzard the other weekend. One guitar player had the reverse Flying V, the other played a regular V. It was a pretty awesome look to have them dancing around and playing with that pair of guitars.
Nah, they had separate microtonal guitar, and even a microtonal bass.
@@stupud818 you know it :D
after seeing this guitar and the headstock it has, i hope to god there is a Gibson ML shaped body guitar with this reverse v headstock, like a prototype that they could of made for Dime when he was shopping around for guitars to use after he left Dean.
I love when two channels I follow do something together. I picked that logo in the thumbnail out right away!
In the end, I'd like to think we all just won. 😁
I think they look cool, especially the black and white ones. I think they'd actually be easier to play than a standard flying v (at least while standing up).
Looks like a neck-diver to me.
More than a regular V, which dives already.
Looks less like a mirror reversal of the V than it does the original Explorer, the Futura, with the rear fin pointing in the wrong direction. Wonder whom else can see that.
If the designers had to include only one control, couldn't they stack it like the some Silvertone or Danelectro models feature? This is limiting like the V copy built by ESP for Kirk Hammit.
Looks like someone at the factory was really really high when they assembled that Flying V!
15:05 sounds like Trogs been listening to some King Gizz
Fwiw, this guitar was completed on Halloween of 2007 (Wednesday, October 31st). Good video!
I think it's time you do a guitar lesson of the week! you're chops are killer!
Davey Johnstone plays one, that's all I need to know about this guitar. Love your channel.
The only guitar I had with ebony (a superstrat) had a dead spot in the fretboard. I never had that with rozewood.
This guitar actually fits the Halloween theme very well, because the 304th day of the year, in wich this guitar was stamped, is actually october 31st haha
I have one of the second gen that is black and has a Classic + in the Bridge . It is a great sounding guitar and you are right it is easier to play sitting but I'm tall so not at all difficult for me to use standing but not so much for my daughter who is a good deal shorter. I got it because it is different looking and keep it for how it sounds.. Though I hope it continues to be hated by most as it has kept the price down.
The Reverse Explorer is actually pretty easy to play but like the reverse V the upper bout can be a problem for some women
I feel like it would make a perfect Valentine’s Day guitar all you have to do is stain it pink and red like cupids arrow.
These must be the most uncomfortable guitar to gig with, but a great wall hanger if you have it pointing at something.
I think I would want one with a firebird headstock for some reason😅
Probably better than the regular V on a strap
Idk I don’t think Vs are that bad. You can hold them in between your legs for extra stability 😂 I like the Jackson Rhodes V shape a bit more personally
Awesome collab!
Dude that guitar is awesome I think it's definitely different because of the shape but it sounds absolutely amazing
The first time I saw a reverse Flying V a mock-up anyway, is in the official video of the Judas Priest song Breaking the Law. A bank guard in the video breaks out a fake non working one and ‘jams’ on it.
This was so awesome of an intro trogly
If I could get an original for 1 grand, I would cut the 2 horns to make it a kind of diamond shape ... 😁
I got one the week they came out. (1st run) The neck fit me perfect, its very comfortable and fast. The 57 classics really scream through a pair of Rivera TBR2s and 16 V30s. I have over 250 Gibsons, definitely one of my top 5 favorites to play. Cool visual too. Good video.
Wow 250!! Do you keep most in their cases in storage? Any tips on how to keep and maintain a large guitar collection? I’ve got 18 guitars but I feel like most will sit for months without being touched
Give me 249 of them
this is my favorite collab ever
It needs a I'm with stupid sticker on it. Did you get my point?
Last night i went to a king gizzard concert and Stu had one of these
It really does sound good. It has a warm rich tone and a fat sound from good lower mids.
God, I wanted to love this guitar so bad. Ultimately, I could never find a comfortable position on it and had to pass it on.
Cool to see a review and I love that it exists, even if it’s not for me.
NOW, the HOLY V…that’s a 5lb ROKK MASHEEN.
EXACTLY. How do hold something like that for a half and hour, let alone 2 hours or whatever
Also rocks a 50th Anniversary SG 12-string; Stu secretly seems to be a massive Gibson nerd lol
I got soo confused when i clicked on Troglys Show and Samurai guitarist is in the intro, thought i maybe did a missclick in my CZcams Home XD
Confusion aside Great Collaboration !
Id cut that top v tip off and zip it to the back, turned around the other way, or to the bottom, and add some sort of wood to the top back. Just to make it look like... Well not that. I mean $2800 for this, or sub $500 for an Epiphone v. Not that much of a head scratcher. 😂
Word has it that they look odd but sound completely killer nice episode guys 👏🤘👍
So very cool 🎸! I think Gibson hit a home run with the reverse! ⚾️
I have to be honest, you couldn't give me that guitar (unless I could sell it) it would be cool to see a Gibson Thunderbolt reviewed, the original was built for a UK guitar magazine as an April fools joke, it has fooled a lot of "knowledgeable" people over the years🙂
Oddball for sure. You can use the top wing as a chin rest when your tired.
I’m going to start a petition to rename the Reverse Flying V to the Flying A.
I always thought the reverse V was awesome. Just looked like a giant arrow. They've done abbreviated versions of the explorer and other guitars. I'm wondering if the ever considered cutting back those wings some placing the toggle closer in . Don't know if that would get people to reconsider a reverse V but I've heard enough people say the wings would be uncomfortable and n the way. Forget the pineapple on a pizza.
Omg. You said mouse pointer, and now I just can’t unsee it.
That one nickel ferrule on the back makes perfect sense now, knowing that it was built in 2007... you know, about 12 years before they realized it might be a good idea to put some light bulbs in the lamps in the QC department, lol.
If the shape is right, maybe you can fit a left handed loaded V pickguard on it.
Dude that was great! Also pineapple pizza is the best! Also also I believe King Gizzard reps a reverse v for their live shows right now
Great collaboration ! I always enjoy Sammy G's videos! Still one odd-looking guitar, though. 😉
my two favorie guitar channels, im actually not kidding!
Rosewood vs Ebony fret boards? Which ever had a finer grain, and was stronger. You can pretty much stain them to be similar in color, but the strength. Ebony is more expensive, and I am a quantity collector ( 9+ ) not so much high end. (2 Gibson, 1 Epi, 1 tach, 5 Yamahas. ) ( wait - 2 more Yamahas in the trunk )
My ultra secret? Red oil furniture polish on the fret board, and yellow oil on the body. Always wipe with cloth before and after playing.
Other secret? folded double paper towels, over and under the strings, at the nut and the bridge. String keepers.
Wow it sounds horrific unplugged but with overdrive and distortion and maybe add a touch of delay and it sounds fantastic
I managed to obtain a original run model a few months ago. I feel lucky having it. I’ve always preferred rosewood over ebony myself, it’s a little softer and warmer feeling to me. Where’s your tone control? I don’t need no stinking tone control.
Trogly, have you ever seen the Dewey decimal flip out guitar? Same principle as Gibson.
That would be a good guitar for the cartoon figure Gumby..
Putting out more runs of that abomination is like Chrysler making more PT Cruisers.
I kinda like the look of this weird thing, but your analogy is very funny.
@@myoptik3x103 "Turn it around. Just turn it around!" the man yelled at the luthier!
i like this headstock more than the round one of the 80s moderne, but its a little sad its mot a mother of pearl gibson logo or a little gold 3d one
Good to see Samurai :)
Got the alpine white and ebony ones..
