    I’ll never forget how I felt after seeing Braveheart in the theater back in the day. I sat in a diner with my friend and we both just sat there and couldn’t even speak. Equal parts horror and utter amazement at the bravery and honor of this man. Such a great film. And those realistic battle scenes weren’t something you saw back then. It really brought home the brutality which was necessary for the movie, not gratuitous. It just showed how much pain and anger the Scots must have felt after centuries of British cruelty.

  • @Abbadonhades
    @Abbadonhades Před 2 lety +11

    I was also in tears watching this movie for the first time. It is powerful storytelling no matter how historically inaccurate it is. Scots themselves will admit to loving this movie despite it having very little to do with reality. It is the grand scale of this war epic that leaves such an impression on you: The rousing speeches, the powerful music, the personal drama, as well as the drama on the greater stage. Aside from Robert the Bruce's personal struggles, there's a very clear good vs evil dynamic and the powerful vs the little guy narrative. If you don't live detached from the world, then how can you avoid being moved by such a great story.

    1:39 There was a contemporary of Wallace’s named Black Douglas. The English found out he was staying at his hunting lodge in the middle of the woods with some of his men. The English sent a considerable force in to kill or capture Black Douglas. None of them made it out of the forest.

    Hannah gets it...I STILL, even after I have seen this movie so many times that I can recite it...I still tear up at the end. To be a man of such action and conviction, and to yell "FREEEEDOOOOOM" with your dying breath just hits people of conviction directly in the heart. All of the historical and timeline inaccuracies aside, this movie will always be in my top 5. Also, you give Robert the Bruce a bit too much slack--you must remember that it was a different time, and he was hiding the fact that his father was sickly and dying by abiding by his wishes. He was a puppet in this movie, until he finally found the courage to tell his dad to basically piss off, and then he truly did, historically speaking, lead Scotland to their independence.

    I don't think William's relationship with the princess happened as soon after Murron's death as it feels in the movie. We're so used to our timescales today where we get to and from places rather quickly, but back in those days the series of events portrayed between his wife's death and the scene where he's intimate with the princess would've been, at minimum, many months or even years. Moving armies around in those days was very slow as generally only the generals and a small % of men would've had horses even. That means armies walked. So the battles and the sacking of York and the back-and-forth of messengers and envoys would've taken a great deal of time. So I don't think it was at all like his wife just died-it had been a long time (and he'd seen the deaths of many of his friends) before he bumped uglies with the princess. I say we give him a pass. 😉

      He wouldn’t of even met the princess she was only 10 when wallace died. Wallace died in 23 aug 1305, longshanks died in 1307 and princess isobella came over in 1308 so never even met longshanks and was only 13 and had her first son in 1312

    Historical inaccuracies aside I'll maintain this is an absolute masterpiece of movie making, one that is more effective than nearly any other in making you feel the stakes of revolution and what it would mean in both the high and low moments to fight and die with your countrymen for the cause of liberty and dignity. Still the best battle scenes I've ever seen

    Sacked means everything and everyone was taken and killed. All possessions was looted and the ONLY survivors were the Scottish, no people from York survived, other than those few who were lucky to run away as the fighting was taking place. Sacked can also mean the same as above but with the addition of the entire city or town as it was back then, being razed to the ground.

    The execution scene when you were asking what was happening is called drawn and quartered. After hanging and being put on the rack, the intestines are drawn out of the body and burned. Then the body is decapitated and cut into quarters. It was widely believed to be the most brutal form of execution at the time.

    43:56 At the risk of not being taken seriously, the ultimate sword and sandal work IMO happens to be an animated japanese series (I don't even normally like japanese animation) called Berserk. The story is etched into the hearts and minds of virtually everyone who has seen (or read) it. It may be too slow in parts for a reaction (and doesn't even start until the second episode), but it's definitely worth a watch privately. If any story is unforgettable, this is it.
