This is my favorite song and my ex of 14 years got to keep our cd. I have searched for what feels like forever for this version. No other version would do. I knew it the instant the music started after 3 years of not hearing it. My soul is at peace now ❤
@Lauren Bagley Yes. One of my favorite songs too. This version has long been known as the best. I know once you hear one version, you get attached to it. I don't hear many with two solos. My personal favorite is from Dick's Pick 29. I had the cassette in the 80s. That one also has two solos and in my opinion is better. Plus you can hear piano. czcams.com/video/XCyjxlTbi_QT/video.htmlhis also has another favorite of mine. Brown Eyed Women.
I woke up this morning with this song in my head and found this one, which I´d never heard before. As soon as the first notes started I began crying uncontrollably, not knowing why. I had to listen again to realize it was the going to Fennario line that struck me..made me remember that we are all on a journey together, all going to the same place in the end. Anyway, even more incredible...after the second listen i focused in on the video and the date - 9/3...today is 9/4 and I woke up with this desire from during the night. Somehow, even though I wasn´t at the show, I feel like my spirit was there and remembered...wow, just wow, what a morning. Thank you Jerry 🙏
I wish I could have seen the Dead when Jerry was alive! My husband saw the Dead hundreds of times!! Rip Jerry, we still play your music over and oover. I hate that John Mayer is trying to take his place. No one will ever match Jerry!!
I used to have this version on a bootleg cassette long ago amongst Many other shows. My ex wound up with them all! So... I know the feeling. But I wound up with the kids and They're Amazing! Our Oldest Just Graduated with his Masters And the other 2 aren't far behind!
I was 16 when I first went.....Shoreline 1989....I still feel what you said....I am 50 now....Still love this band! They are the best most honest Ive ever heard!
So, cool, brother, I was 7 having soccer practice in the field next to this madness. We asked the coach, who are they, he said "Jerry Garcia, its like a rock opera" (first time I heard the name J. G. lol)... Sure enough, I went on tour at 17 years old from 1987-91 and then 154 shows later Im 53 fkn years old already... Peace, Jerry Garcia ✌🏼
On this Day the police would not let exit to Raceway Park. So in True Fashion we ran the Barricades because we had Tickets. and after dumping the car as far as we could drive. We follow the the sound of Pannama Red as the Riders greeted us in. There is just so much to say about this whole day, but as Night fell and the Dead played on. all i can say is WOW. this is Not a Strange Trip. Waking up the next day was another rebirth for humanity shared with 1000's of Dead Heads. I have been Blessed to be a Part of it all and it will remain with me to the End of my Days..... Thank You to everyone who has shared the Journey we me and Thanks goes out to the "Band" w/ Peace & Love always....... steve
Deadheads remember Englishtown 77... It's out there finished right before the pandemic shut down live music and bars, which was my selling audience. Also Grateful Memories; Ten Years on the Road Taping the Grateful Dead.... Available since 2015.
Growing up in New Jersey had it's awesome aspects. Partying at the shore, Hitting the Delaware River Water Gap area on a hot summer day, and all the fine rock shows that the tri-state area attracted. This show was absolutely one of the high points of my teen years. My sweet girlfriend and I chilling on a blanket through the long day, and the Grateful Dead coming on as the sun set. Like a miracle. I thanks God for this band, they have enriched my life beyond measure. The Grateful Dead aren't just the BEST at what they do, they are the ONLY ones who do what they do!
The Mid Atlantic in deep summer is one of the loveliest places on earth. I'm glad I live here, though if I was extremely wealthy I'd still live at the beach in the South Bay part of LA County like I once did long, long ago.
@@melaniecotterell8263 I don't remember having a long walk but we must have because we got there during MTB, and like you I have no idea how I found my 68 Chevelle!
Call me crazy, but give me a time machine, and following the Dead and witnessing some of these fabled '77 legendary shows is getting serious top 3 consideration.
I’ve turned many people onto the Grateful Dead over 4 decades of my life on this bright, blue ball just spinning spinning free. MANY of them would say to me, “oh I hate the Grateful Dead!” Then we would proceed to laugh, have a few drinks, hit the bowl and I would play some Dead without them knowing. Almost without hesitation, they would say, “ this is fantastic! Who is this? Their limited little minds would be blown when I told them. I can’t help but wonder from time to time, if the Dead had a different name like “The Lollipop Ice Cream Adventure Brothers Band” how many more zillion fans they would have had. So many people were closed minded and turned of by their name. It makes me sad to think of all those people that missed out on a true American treasure. 😎
I recently got this version with Dick’s Picks 15 Englishtown 9/3/77, which I highly recommend!!) and this is indeed an incredible version. Between the recording quality, Jerry’s vocals and solos, and the interplay of the whole band, this is just the Dead at their best.
Pls all my loved ones know you keep grinding. Always use caution bc we all were kids . Held it down the way we do is a blessing. So slow and I miss all my friends
One of the best start to finish shows...period...but doesn't get the recognition it should...the energy of the band was fantastic...not a clunker or low point all day, and just a sick 2nd set 😎
I was at Englishtown on my honeymoon. Long hot walk to the track. But it was worth it. I attended many shows it was one of the best. But how do you compare one to the other. No one can. Each one is a work of art. Jerry Lives!!!!
I too, was there - it was maybe my second, or third GD show - and like so many other attendees who have posted - I parked about 3 miles away, and got separated from the guys I went with! LOL! I think half the folks there can say the same thing! No cell phones, huge crowd, horrible port-a-potty situation - but my oh my what incredible versions of Peggy-O, Looks Like Rain, Bertha, and the other worldly Mississippi Half Step. Dick had no choice but to Pick it. And although I agree that picking "best " versions of any Dead song is an inexact science - 37 years later, the quality of Englishtown is unquestioned, not only by those of us who were in the crowd, but by those who weren't. It was our Woodstock, and I truly believe this legendary concert paved the way for the arena and stadium shows the Dead regularly played on the east coast every summer until the end. But this . . . . . this was 4 plus hours of lightning, caught in a bottle . . . . .
I was there I had a little VW convertible and was shuttling people up and down the road who had coolers and dropping them at the gates. For some reason nobody stopped us we were just idling up and down the road til I couldn't drive any more due to the tips we were getting from the passengers along the way lol
PEACE REIGNS! God Bless The STAR LEDGER! John Scher sold 48,000 tickets and 150,000 people showed up (Star Ledger said 125,000, but that was before the sun went down..... I was there. Can you imagine a Band saying, we are going to play a show at a racetrack in central New Jersey and having 150,000 people show up..... without violence or insanity..... this was when Englishtown Raceway in Old Bridge , New jersey was served by 2 lane roads through farms, woods and quiet suburbs.. whatanite
I was there -- and I have to say -- it was one of the best days of my life! Many, many Dead shows later...Englishtown stands out above many others. So hard to believe that 37 years have passed. The music was amazing, the crowd was peaceful and fun - it was just a tremendous experience. Off to Chicago for the last time on July 3, 2015.
I live a few miles from Englishtown. There is a local band called The Englishtown Project that plays great Dead music...always fun to listen to them at a local shore bar.
I agree with your great response. Let's just borrow from Jimmy Buffet's "A Pirate Looks At 40": "Yes, I am a pirate 200 years too late. The cannons don't thunder there's nothin' to plunder". Majestic.
What a great fucking day! The travel, the friends and one of the most wonderful Dead shows. I too remember this as if it were yesterday. Thanks for the memories everyone.
what a great show this was, camped out and climbed over the containers to get in,nrps and marshall tucker,my memory of those days is a bit sketchy but i do remember this was a great show
It was a great year to be 18 years old. We rented two school busses and came in from Brooklyn to Englishtown for this show. Now I'm 60! But it's a heck of a good memory! The heat was on that day!
was born in 71. dint really know the dead untill touch of grey. wow come to find out they would go to the koffee klatch in fairfax cal. my Mom and aunts place and hang out and have there breakfast/ lunch. Mom said Jerry would sit at the bar read the paper and some time mom would tell Jerry you want your food hold my daughter and ill make it! my moms so cool!!!!
The folks below have said it all, but one can't say enough about Jerry and his commitment to music and to the band...........as a veteran of over 100 shows, I can't say enough about how this band and its members have shaped my life through the decades. Thanks guys for your being you and never retreating from that place. I wish I would be around 100 years from now to listen to by brothers and sisters ask "Who the fuck are these guys?" They are really special !!! Indeed, they are!!! There never was, has been, or will be ANYTHING like a Grateful Dead show!!!
Spent the night before up in New Paltz on Smitty's Mountain....went to the show the next day, walk three miles from where we parked...dropped and went off into one of the best shows I had ever seen. Later, I got a ride back to NYC from some people heading in the same direction as those I came with were no where to be found.
Was there, separated from friends, right up front, nothing to drink, scorching sun and blazing heat, standing for hours, 20 yrs. old, loving the Dead, surviving... awesome video ❤
Well...I wasn't there because I wasn't born for another 12 years. Lol. But I can tell u this Is the best or should I say my favorite version of Peggy O I've ever heard. The clarity is exceptional.
Steve Oberson We had just set up tent, consumed some BlueWafer that seemed everywhere.Playing frisbee, owner and shotgun asked us to move....Tent never did go back right!! Lol What a wknd.not a thing left on a shelf.Plenty of warm Bud stacked in bar and some festival had rolls for sale, after all that searching, never took more than a bite!! Lol No money even for tolls !One Great wknd...even 40 years later.
This was my first of 210 Dead shows...........I went in not getting them at all and left a totally changed person. I made my way crawling over people to get near the front. When i got there for the last 2 sets, thats when i heard the magic that is The Grateful Dead. Slow ballads where you could hear a pin drop and rock-n roll thunder as powerful as any. Oh, and JERRY GARCIA!
My first Dead concert, I was 18 from Ohio. There with a huge group of friends. Peak experience of my life. Bitter sweet memories of friends gone by, Those in heaven save me a spot on the lawn and Jerry and the guys will still be there.....
Isnt it funny how classic songs played in their original version has been covered differently but other or new artists to show how diverse the songs cud be… The grateful dead did that everytime thwy played their songs. Different each time. AWESOME
I was 7yrs old and a VW bus parked 3.5 miles from Raceway Park as I was mowing the lawn( yeah kids learned how to mow early those days). They asked how to walk to Raceway Park and 2 days later they returned, covered in dust and smiles…. Fast forward to college and got the cassettes of the show and immediately understood why they walked so far to the show…
Too young to go ( and not really into the Dead back then) but I remember how huge it was and all the older kids in my neigborhood went to it . Nice recording !
Not only were the Dead at this show, but the New Riders of the Purple Sage and Marshall Tucker. I've seen the Dead before this show, my first time ever to see NRPS or MT. Great show. We had a caravan of about 10 vehicles that made the short ride from West Virginia and Maryland. I bought a couple of T-shirts that only recently I had to inter! A great end to one of the best summers I ever experienced. Thanks for posting!
Come on now, who else sounds like Jerry...NO ONE!!! When he sings, it's as if it really happened to him. Rest in peace Jerry and take care and watch over my sweet husband Trevan 08 22 2022. 😢
Jim, I was born in '51 and wish you could have shared in the 130 shows I loved and enjoyed! We should be glad Jerry didn't take your Mom's advice and get a "real" job. Take care, Jack
Coming back to revisit this fine day. I had the extreme pleasure of being a stage hand at Englishtown and was right behind Keith for the whole show. Words cannot describe what a special day that was for me. Observing the interactions of the band members and the impact of the crowd on them was a trip, not to mention making eye contact with Phil during He's Gone!
4/30/77 Palladium NYC best Peggy O. I was at that show, Englishtown and many others on the spring '77 tour. 1st set 4/30 one of the 5 best sets of 1977.
I was there with my first wife on our Honeymoon. We stopped to go to paradise. Good show only fair sound. Saw shows in 1973 with the wall of sound which blew this show away.(Utica, Buffalo etc. and Philadelphia, Washington and New York!) Great Peggy O!
The Las Vegas 6/26/1994 is the Ultimate of Jerry s renditions of this classic melecholic song. Just woner. This is the beautiful timelessness of his Genius . Never before and never again shall a human being live that can walk in those boots. Thus the Deadheads are 110 percent correct in their dedication to and for this gentle loving man. God never makes mistake which is so clearly demonstrated in all these live from the Vault treasures. Thank heaven that someone took it upon themselves to capture these concerts that he will live forever should Decades from now anyone can listen and know that there was a time when music could transform and transport you places unseen and not spoken of any longer. That's called innocence and if only it could be called upon to recall a treasured moment in a treasured time of human history . I thank my God for allowing me to witness These eternal things borne into the mind of a self taught Genius. Praise God and Praise Jerry.
We came in from New Paltz where we camped out at Smith's. Rolling in on the cube, I remember hanging by the sound board and having a very good time....lol
Lived in East Brunswick. Didn't go to the show as I was 12 with no means. Got an 8 track of the show from my cousin who went, from Union College. Went to Englishtown every Sunday for the flea market and tried to recreate the show in my head for years afterwards.
Dick-Picks Vol #15. What a concert....and a pretty good recording of it...Thanks to Betty (once again..). Caught the '81 Nassau Coll. concert and before that a concert in Madison WI in '73 and before that the Port Chester concert in Feb '71 at the ripe old age of 16.
Many stellar versions in 1977. It was a strong year for the song, obviously this being a great example. For personal reasons I lean towards Boston May '77.

Can u name a bad one? Its all good.
5/19/77 Atlanta...or Dicks picks 29 killer peggy-o
It was a great year for their shows. St. Paul and Madison were outstanding and of course there was the legendary Cornell show.
My favourite Peggy-O is from St Paul, 1977-05-11
How much fun that weekend was , new riders and marshals tucked in the morning and afternoon and the dead to 1:30 am
Agreed! This is the best version of Peggy-O the Dead ever played.
Thank you for sharing.
Jerry is God. LSD saves.

I worked this concert backstage in the heliport. Was up for 2 days.😅
my fav song done epicaly by the master himself....goosebumps! 😎👍
My sister went I was not with the Bronx Crew yet but seen them many times 🎉☘️
I was 17, the best Dead show I can recall experiencing, on many levels.
Well...I wasn't there because I wasn't born for another 12 years. Lol. But I can tell u this Is the best or should I say my favorite version of Peggy O I've ever heard. The clarity is exceptional.
That TB 500 had such a great sound...it really makes those solos jump out at you. I believe this was the last time Jerry played it in concert.
Was at the show with half of greenpoint😀
I imagine this to be one of the greatest stories ever told.
Yes!
It was
and sadly women have not changed.....
what a show ,had to park miles away ,hot as hell ,great show
Steve Oberson We had just set up tent, consumed some BlueWafer that seemed everywhere.Playing frisbee, owner and shotgun asked us to move....Tent never did go back right!! Lol What a wknd.not a thing left on a shelf.Plenty of warm Bud stacked in bar and some festival had rolls for sale, after all that searching, never took more than a bite!! Lol No money even for tolls !One Great wknd...even 40 years later.
Was there and it was fun!

AWESOME
Thanks Betty for all the boards.
And Travis Bean of course.
I've literally been listening to this on repeat all day - I can't get enough of it.
I was 7yrs old and a VW bus parked 3.5 miles from Raceway Park as I was mowing the lawn( yeah kids learned how to mow early those days). They asked how to walk to Raceway Park and 2 days later they returned, covered in dust and smiles…. Fast forward to college and got the cassettes of the show and immediately understood why they walked so far to the show…
Jeez......this the holy grail for me! Long live the Dead
This was more than just a Beautiful Day for us and the Dead - It sealed us forever w/ Peace
Perhaps the best performance of this song. From the two amazing leads and Bobby’s perfect rhythm additions. Would do anything to have video of this.
great show. Great Peggy-O. The band was in top form that day. Jerry gave the best effort I ever saw, at that show.
I was there and I don't remember shit.
lol
me too, vague memories lol
you had a good time.
Mushed have been something you ate...
you remember you were there, that's good enough
Yes...and the Estimated/Eyes is also one of the Best Ever!
Jim, I was born in '51 and wish you could have shared in the 130 shows I loved and enjoyed! We should be glad Jerry didn't take your Mom's advice and get a "real" job. Take care, Jack
Was there ,16 years old, got up to the front row for 2nd set right in front of Bobby, loved every second ……..
Makes me want to cry, Jerry brings it all out of me!
i was there too...trippin my arse off.

Kyle Roth great song
I was there too. I miss those days
The apex of Grateful Dead playing /music.
And I was there. The highlight of my NJ youth,,
A stellar show during what is arguably the Dead's greatest year. Outstanding.
+Karl Hildebrand Rite on I always considered '76,
'77,'78 the best years.
Have to admit, best Peggy-O. The one in Las Vegas is pretty great too!
Thank heaven that someone took it upon themselves to capture these concerts that he will live forever should
Decades from now anyone can listen and know that there was a time when music could transform and transport you places unseen and not spoken of any longer.
That's called innocence and if only
it could be called upon to recall a treasured moment in a treasured time of human history .
I thank my God for allowing me to witness
These eternal things borne into the mind of
a self taught Genius.
Praise God and Praise
Jerry.
Never met a Peggy-O I didn’t like. This, Buffalo, and New Haven.#77versions
Their best ballad. End of story.
We came in from New Paltz where we camped out at Smith's. Rolling in on the cube, I remember hanging by the sound board and having a very good time....lol
Still trippin.......live and love
Lived in East Brunswick. Didn't go to the show as I was 12 with no means. Got an 8 track of the show from my cousin who went, from Union College. Went to Englishtown every Sunday for the flea market and tried to recreate the show in my head for years afterwards.
Dick-Picks Vol #15. What a concert....and a pretty good recording of it...Thanks to Betty (once again..).
Caught the '81 Nassau Coll. concert and before that a concert in Madison WI in '73
and before that the Port Chester concert in Feb '71 at the ripe old age of 16.
With great joy and amazement I was present and nearly accounted for at this show and it remains one of my most cherished brain washes
I was there.....Great Weed...amazing sound ..clear as a bell even 4 miles away....great times..!
Many stellar versions in 1977. It was a strong year for the song, obviously this being a great example.
For personal reasons I lean towards Boston May '77.
Im also big on fox theatre also may 77
