I use to work in special effects and I worked with one of the guys that helped with the fat suit. He said that Paltrow was the meanest actor he ever worked with but believed it was because she never ate anything so she was always hangry. He said that he bet if she just ate she’d be a really nice person. He also said it was hard to put her in the fat suit and then blend it on cus she was basically a ticking time bomb.

There was this Korean drama about a girl who felt she was super, super UGLY and who had been heavily bullied in school due to her looks. Premise of the drama was that she got a plastic surgery to change her whole face and moved away to study in uni - and ramifications of all that. Drama was actually smart in how it handled her pre-surgery face; we never saw it, not even once. We only saw her overall body and hair in some flashbacks where she was being bullied/helped/sad - hair was covering her face. This was spot on because ultimately it was never about what she REALLY looked like - it was the society & bullies making her feel ugly.
And this is the issue with movies/dramas like these. If you show people's appearance "before", you create a discussion on what is actually beautiful. When that should not be the point at all.

@@inexperiencedladywithagun7851 it's kissing on the forehead and cheeks, just like a parent would, and the reason the above comment said that this is heart wrenching is because probably a lot of their parents/family members/loved ones don't want to look at them while they're disfigured, don't want to touch them, don't want to kiss them, so something like the kissing game again, you can see it's just on the forehead and cheeks, helps them feel normal and like they aren't disfigured, and gives them human touch and comfort that they're probably lacking from.

@inuyasha1014 I totally understand where your coming from and I know you saw it from an innocent point of view. That part of the film has always bothered me though as I don't want any hospital employee volunteer or stranger kissing or touching my child anywhere on their body under the guise of a game or ever unnecessarily period. Even family has strict boundaries and kids can opt to shake hands not hug or kiss family if they are not comfortable. No touchy games ever. Pedos do this sadly as grooming to see what they can get the kid to agree to and then escalate slowly. 90 percent of child sexual abuse can be prevented by educating kids and parents. Just a PSA. I'm glad you added the summary at the end where you mentioned that Hal idealized Rosemary and the other women in his own mind. I don't know why people overlook this every time, but he goes on a long monologue in the Tony Robbins scene about supermodels, and exactly what he thinks is hot, and then every reviewer is like "why does Hal see everyone as a smoking hot supermodel?" Did you not watch that scene?! They even got a literal supermodel to play one of the roles! Also, when he sees the guys in her life (from the Peace Corps) they are super altruistic types so he sees them as intimidatingly handsome, especially her ex-boyfriend, another tip off to the mechanic used. It's so frustrating, because this movie isn't demonizing fat people, it's trying to talk about how we judge others. As a fat person myself, I thought it was hilarious, and had some sweet moments. I was OK with the exaggerated moments, like I was OK with Mauricio being such an exaggerated douchebag himself. It's farce. I'm sad that Paltrow saw this as her worst acting effort, because I thought she actually did a good job of portraying someone who wanted to be bold and confident, but couldn't help feeling bad about herself when people made comments. Still, there was a LOT of fallout from this movie, and after the fact I think she felt it damaged her image. I remember interviews she did at the time where she was very excited and bubbly about it, but her tune did change afterwards when she felt she had to apologize for "being mean to fat people."

I saw it when I was younger but didn't quite understand it at the time like I do now... and no it did not age well but was still funny and entertaining. The whole premise was about how Hal saw the stereotypes so he was then hypnotized to see people for how he wanted to see them so that he could open himself up to approaching different people and developing relationships with them for their personalities or "inner beauty" rather than having to first get past how they look to him. 📽🤓

It kind of makes sense that all the women turn into bombshells because that what Hal is into. When they are beautiful on the inside he sees his most ideal type. And he is a person who seeks validation only outwardly, which is why his ideal woman in the beginning was only centred on what was the societal ideal. He wanted a beautiful woman to make his status in society better. To make him appear superior to all the men who couldn’t have her.

I think they have the flashback in order to garner sympathy for Hal's character. Finding Nemo gives Marlin the same treatment. The story of Nemo's injury and Pearl's death was supposed to be a flashback revealed later in the story. It was found, however, that test audiences failed to sympathize with Marlin due to his previous controlling behavior up until this point in the movie. The decision was then made to put the Pearl scene at the beginning, which allowed the audience to forgive all of Marlin's previously unacceptable behavior.

Another thing the movie did was make the 2 male leads overweight. Jason Alexander and Jack Black are not "hotties" in the stereotypical sense. They didn't choose Matthew McConaughey and Bradley Cooper for those roles. Which MEANS... they are also saying that a "hottie" guy would never "end up" with the overweight girl. It's like they are also saying that in order for "Shallow Hal" to stop being shallow and end up with fat Rosemary, he has to be the "type" of guy who will believably "end up" with her. ALSO, in order for them to "strike out" in the beginning with all the "hottie" girls they couldn't have been hottie guys. So not only is the movie saying overweight women won't get hot guys, it's also saying overweight men won't get hot girls. * sigh *

She then thinks he's nice because he's dating an obese lady and suddenly she's interested in him?? It doesn't make any sense that Hal sees Rosemary the way she really is after hallucinating her as a completely different looking woman. Then suddenly he thinks she's beautiful in her true form. Also it's very problematic to show people with deformities as "ugly" on the outside and perfect on the inside. Not a great message and very cringe.

@@samanthajayewardene4523 The basic message of the movie is that an innocent burn victim and a woman who genetically has a big nose are comparable to a woman with no self-control who is choosing to eat herself to death. Great message!

A lot of the town shots are Downtown Concord. I lived not far from there. It's a cool little trivia.

A chair broke under me at the restaurant one day and I could have gotten seriously injured if my cousin hadn't immediately grabbed my arm (the chair was situated on a sort of platform and it literally fell off of it). This was about 6 years ago and I was severely underweight, about 39 kg (86 pounds). I was suffering from this illness but I recovered eventually. But anyways, I remember how there were many people turning over to see the "fatty" who broke the chair and their faces just turned away uninterested the second they realized that wasn't the case. And I have to admit that it did cross my mind that I was "lucky" I wasn't overweight, but it still was pretty embarassing. My point is, chairs can break under anyone, once it broke under a 10 year old child in this restaurant I was in, and she was quite small.
This movie could have been a lot better if some of the elements were taken out, some of the scenes are just ridiculous and unfunny.

Are you sure they turned to see that, and not just to see what made the sound or if everything/you were ok? And when they realized it was just a chair and that you were probably fine they were uninterested?
Chairs can break under anyone... kids probably more often because they tend to play around more

Please review one of my favorite movies, Austenland. Keri Russel plays a Jane Austen-obsessed woman who spends her life savings on a vacation to Austenland where she can live out her Regency dreams. It’s in no way a great movie, but I love it. And Jennifer Coolidge is in it!
