this is how I always read the movie, I really like it for that. individuals growing through their perceptions. even if they are the same opinions often reflected in broader society.
A lack of self-control and toxic, destructive eating habits are not beautiful. At her weight, Rosemary needs serious mental help, not an enabling boyfriend. If a boyfriend told a cocaine addict that she was beautiful just as she was, that would be a terrible boyfriend. Loving boyfriends do not accept a girlfriend's eating herself to an early death and lifeline health problems.

@@hudak55 Ivy Snitzer is her name, in this movie and Norbit, fat body doubles are used to show more realistic arms and legs and such. Jack Black is the best part. This movie is so odd and messed up in so many ways, yet I swear I've seen it a hundred times! Oh, and Jaime, I, too, would've been way creeped out over your chiropractor
I'm glad you added the summary at the end where you mentioned that Hal idealized Rosemary and the other women in his own mind. I don't know why people overlook this every time, but he goes on a long monologue in the Tony Robbins scene about supermodels, and exactly what he thinks is hot, and then every reviewer is like "why does Hal see everyone as a smoking hot supermodel?" Did you not watch that scene?! They even got a literal supermodel to play one of the roles! Also, when he sees the guys in her life (from the Peace Corps) they are super altruistic types so he sees them as intimidatingly handsome, especially her ex-boyfriend, another tip off to the mechanic used. It's so frustrating, because this movie isn't demonizing fat people, it's trying to talk about how we judge others. As a fat person myself, I thought it was hilarious, and had some sweet moments. I was OK with the exaggerated moments, like I was OK with Mauricio being such an exaggerated douchebag himself. It's farce. I'm sad that Paltrow saw this as her worst acting effort, because I thought she actually did a good job of portraying someone who wanted to be bold and confident, but couldn't help feeling bad about herself when people made comments. Still, there was a LOT of fallout from this movie, and after the fact I think she felt it damaged her image. I remember interviews she did at the time where she was very excited and bubbly about it, but her tune did change afterwards when she felt she had to apologize for "being mean to fat people."
I rewatched not too long ago for the first time as an adult. I saw it when I was younger but didn't quite understand it at the time like I do now... and no it did not age well but was still funny and entertaining. The whole premise was about how Hal saw the stereotypes so he was then hypnotized to see people for how he wanted to see them so that he could open himself up to approaching different people and developing relationships with them for their personalities or "inner beauty" rather than having to first get past how they look to him. 📽🤓
It kind of makes sense that all the women turn into bombshells because that what Hal is into. When they are beautiful on the inside he sees his most ideal type. And he is a person who seeks validation only outwardly, which is why his ideal woman in the beginning was only centred on what was the societal ideal. He wanted a beautiful woman to make his status in society better. To make him appear superior to all the men who couldn’t have her.
Jamie, you are so chill. When I watch I always feel like I’m hanging out with you in the 80’s playing Chutes n Ladders, muting the tv and doing stupid voiceovers for the infomercials. Video was great, btw and FREE WAFFLES!!
I think they have the flashback in order to garner sympathy for Hal's character. Finding Nemo gives Marlin the same treatment. The story of Nemo's injury and Pearl's death was supposed to be a flashback revealed later in the story. It was found, however, that test audiences failed to sympathize with Marlin due to his previous controlling behavior up until this point in the movie. The decision was then made to put the Pearl scene at the beginning, which allowed the audience to forgive all of Marlin's previously unacceptable behavior.
Remember in the beginning of Tropic Thunder when they were doing a montage of everybody's different movie careers?.... Jack black's was like the Fatties , which was simply a white version of the Clumps.....I'll never forget my sister and I were watching Tropic Thunder together and she was like, "didn't Jack Black actually do a movie like that?" I thought for a sec and realized she may have been thinking about Shallow Hal.

One line that lives rent-free in my head is when she says "that 'halo' around his head?...that's called psoriasis" 😭😭😭❤ Nothing against anyone with psoriasis, of course. The funny part to me is that he called it a halo to begin with, and how she snaps back at him with that.
Another thing the movie did was make the 2 male leads overweight. Jason Alexander and Jack Black are not "hotties" in the stereotypical sense. They didn't choose Matthew McConaughey and Bradley Cooper for those roles. Which MEANS... they are also saying that a "hottie" guy would never "end up" with the overweight girl. It's like they are also saying that in order for "Shallow Hal" to stop being shallow and end up with fat Rosemary, he has to be the "type" of guy who will believably "end up" with her. ALSO, in order for them to "strike out" in the beginning with all the "hottie" girls they couldn't have been hottie guys. So not only is the movie saying overweight women won't get hot guys, it's also saying overweight men won't get hot girls. * sigh *
Yeah I watched this way too young and internalized fucking allllll that shit. Also just the blanket idea that you can’t be fat and hot is actually crazy.
“They” are not saying anything, it’s literally just a movie. It doesn’t require deep thought, just watch it and laugh. The fact that you actually took it seriously to the point where you’re over-analyzing it says more about you than it does the people who made it. *sigh*

This movie makes no sense! He's not "seeing people for their inner beauty." He's just hallucinating that they have outer beauty while still being just as shallow and lookist as he has always been!
I was WAITING for someone else to notice this. Their execution of him only seeing inner beauty was not well done. They should still look fat to him but he shouldn’t care because of their inner beauty.
There's a lot wrong with this movie. He was absolutely rude to his neighbor (Jill) more than once- bothering her, ignoring her then asking her out. She then thinks he's nice because he's dating an obese lady and suddenly she's interested in him?? It doesn't make any sense that Hal sees Rosemary the way she really is after hallucinating her as a completely different looking woman. Then suddenly he thinks she's beautiful in her true form. Also it's very problematic to show people with deformities as "ugly" on the outside and perfect on the inside. Not a great message and very cringe.

A chair broke under me at the restaurant one day and I could have gotten seriously injured if my cousin hadn't immediately grabbed my arm (the chair was situated on a sort of platform and it literally fell off of it). This was about 6 years ago and I was severely underweight, about 39 kg (86 pounds). I was suffering from this illness but I recovered eventually. But anyways, I remember how there were many people turning over to see the "fatty" who broke the chair and their faces just turned away uninterested the second they realized that wasn't the case. And I have to admit that it did cross my mind that I was "lucky" I wasn't overweight, but it still was pretty embarassing. My point is, chairs can break under anyone, once it broke under a 10 year old child in this restaurant I was in, and she was quite small. This movie could have been a lot better if some of the elements were taken out, some of the scenes are just ridiculous and unfunny.
Are you sure they turned to see that, and not just to see what made the sound or if everything/you were ok? And when they realized it was just a chair and that you were probably fine they were uninterested? Chairs can break under anyone... kids probably more often because they tend to play around more

The part where he realises Cadence is a burn victim and the part where he see's the real Rosemary and his genuine reaction "is OMG, you're beautiful" both made me cry lol
Morbid obesity is a sign that a person has no self-discipline and is dangerous. She needs cobstructive criticism and help in her life, not a person who will enable her self-abuse. Telling someone who is morbidly obese that she is beautiful is abusive. His enabling comments are toxic.
@@benjaminfranklin8412 benny boi, you are so stupid it's not even funny. obesity isn't about a discipline, but, mind you, it is an illness. and it is always about trauma. it's basically a "protection" from the world. so no, shaming and aggression wouldn't help. just like you wouldn't want discipline an abused dog, you wouldn't want to do that with mind and body of the obese person.

I’m fascinated by the fact, the dad‘s appearance never changes. like his inner and outer beauty are exactly aligned I hope this is on purpose and not by mistake.
I think that has to do with the fact he knew what he looked like before he got hypnotized

I never realized that one of the ladies Hal dances with in the club is the actress that plays The Nun. She’s so boss for capitalizing on her unique look.

Wow didn’t realize that. Always thought she is a very unique looking lady, not ugly.
She'd looks like the splitting image of 'Mother' in Tangled, if there's ever a live-action movie, she'd be a first pick!
Gotta say, one of the funniest parts of this movie to me was watching Bronx-born Joe Viterelli, who spent his career playing almost *exclusively* Italian monsters, playing Rosemary's super-Irish father. I laugh every time he speaks.

I was having a hard time at home in 6th grade when this came out, and my favourite creative writing teacher at middle school noticed and took me on a day out. We went to the museum where she got me a butterfly pendant with my name on it, lunch, and then we saw Shallow Hal. I always have fond memories of this movie because of her, Ms. Zeitz you were a class act thank you for that day I still have the butterfly pendant
That's such a cute story and memory! ❤
This is such a wholesome story about shallow Hal lmao
This is so sweet but imagine how inappropriate everyone would say this is if it happened today. And to be honest I would be a little worried if a teacher was asking to spend one on one time with my kid outside of school like that too. I would be worried they would try to kidnap them or do something inappropriate, but I think that’s because how screwed up the world is now.
ikr looking back it does seem inappropriate lol, I remember asking my mom years later when it dawned on me and she totally shrugged off that it could've gone bad. Thankfully my teacher was a great role model and didn't do anything untoward, but I can see why that wouldn't fly today lol (I even visited her apartment that day!). Later on it kind of bothered me that my mom left it up to a stranger to take me on a day out, she never did anything like that with me or my sisters.

Thank you. This comment deserves more upvotes. Well stated.

I love that you actually divide and warn about the add breaks!

You missed Mauricios hair "mishaps" After he takes Hal out of the restaurant, the edge of the hair piece lifts up and down. At the end when he is taking about his tail, it's like his hair is the hair fibers have been scratched off down his forehead lol Idk how editing missed the last one

One line that lives rent-free in my head is when she says "that 'halo' around his head?...that's called psoriasis" 😭😭😭❤ Nothing against anyone with psoriasis, of course. The funny part to me is that he called it a halo to begin with, and how she snaps back at him with that.

Your energy in this video is great, you seem to be in better spirits. It's great to see.

This video cured my depression, thank you
A chair broke under me at the restaurant one day and I could have gotten seriously injured if my cousin hadn't immediately grabbed my arm (the chair was situated on a sort of platform and it literally fell off of it).
