We took our CAT BACKPACKING in COLOMBIA for 20 MILES!

- Graham (best cat ever?) has hiked tons without a leash, but now that he can come backpacking, our world is opening to new possibilities! Our cat and dog joined us on a backpacking trip up a Colombian mountain, and then we all slept in our two person tent.
On the way up we suffered a near disaster. A torrential downpour at high altitude stopped us in our shivering tracks. We had to build a temporary shelter and huddle together for warmth as lightning crashed overhead! Truly the scariest thing that has ever happened to us while backpacking...
This mountain range, the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, is the tallest mountain range closest to the ocean in the world and also it's home to Colombia's tallest mountain and some glaciers!
For the 20 miles we carried our survival supplies, and sometimes also our 10lb cat. We had an awesome time backpacking and can’t wait to take Graham and Sombrita on longer trips around South America.

Killer hike! Almost literally. "Thunder"...followed by Emily expression of F! Graham did great. The little shadow was spent...helluva hike for her carrying a pack and added stress of thunder and lightning. For the longer hikes - adjust her pack during breaks and long breaks go ahead and pop it off of her while 'breakking' (I breakky for brekky?), at least initially - once she gets more seasoned with it she'll be able to keep pushing (rule of thumb is an average of 15% of her body weight). Awesome job Vahn Der Sons! Keeps getting better. Nice smooth bowl on the previous video, would make a killer ride.

I like how people are realizing that cats enjoy walks/outdoor time too. Even with the push for greater safety (as in not letting cats roam unchecked), it's a relief that good people are finding ways to give their cats some quality time outdoors.

Graham was the star of this episode! What an adorable cat. He reminds me of my past cat who looked like him. His name was Calypso in honor of Calypso Rose; she seranted us with a killer celebration -on our special10 day of September celebration in Belize.

Awesome survival skills Danny and Emily. So impressed with the shelter. Idk how the four of you fit in that tent. When we went caving in PA I slept in that tent myself (in what I thought was a wicked storm, it was nothing compared to what you two just did) and man I felt I barely fit in that tent. I mean I think I weigh about as much as the both of you put together, lol. So impressed. I liked the back up plan with the fire. Always need fire. I also saw the Heritage Shirts from Sea Isle City, woot woot representing SIC. Donna Fitz, AKA Bonus Mom will be happy to know you used the comfy gear on your epic adventures. You are both extreme and fearless explorers. I could not be more proud. That was a day well earned. Love you both, keep the adventures coming.

What a great vid guys! You ALL did an amazing hike. Could hardly believe Graham!!! Staying with you all that hiking and even eating and sleeping in the tent! Honestly I expected him to do something but he was just perfect!! And Sombrita did soo good with her heavier pack. They both have become wonderful travellers and sweetest companions.
Beautiful scenery but I can imagine that cold rain up there was pretty intense. But Emily you came through with a nice hot meal again even in a tent!

Wow! You kitty looks just like my hiking son Smokeybear.. but with his leash and waking harness. We go for trail hikes too..but my kitty soon would go off and exolore without his leash. So I have to keep him in his leash with me when we are outside.

Graham only drinks our filtered water :) Sombrita drinks a lot of stream water
Being from Colombia and having been in a lot of the country and having been in Parque Tayrona, This is something I always wanted to do. Back then you couldn't cuz it was too dangerous because of civil unrest. I might be too old to make it out there now but I get to see you guys and enjoyed it! Goid going!

THIS WAS AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When did you get the pets - when they were little? I have a cat (Abby), but she was a rescue and at about age 10 then, she's very cautious and afraid - she doesn't even like to be held, though she will let me hold her. Anyway, your pets are astounding and you guys are so much alike you're like brother and sister! Looking forward to more adventures. This was just so awesome. Thank you for all the hard work you had to do to produce it for us. :)

So cool that Graham doesn't wander off and he seems good in the carrier too. How old is he? I'm trying to get my 3 yr old cat ready for full-time travel by leash training and used to being in the car. Right now I wouldn't trust her walking without the leash. She'll go chase everything that moves!

That was a wonderful adventure. I used to live in the foothills outside of Denver, about 6.5k feet. It is surprising how cold it can get so fast, especially when it is raining. I hope there will be many more adventures like this with all of you in South America. Will you be going to Brazil? Do you know Portuguese? Safe travels.
