The unreliability of the 307 helped Loeb win. Remember what Gronholm achieved with the 206. He remains my all time fave driver.

It wasn't only the 307. Go check out how often the Focus broke down and left McRae stranded when he was doing good. Sure he crashed a lot, but he was let down many times. Then one day in 2001 protested to Malcolm Wilson saying that either he had a good car o he's out, and miraculously he won 3 consective rallies.
I agree with you that Gronholm was better. Loeb only had the way better car, and most other WRC of those years were sub par.

In 2006 I was 20 years old when I knew about the rally in Guanajuato, México (I’m from Irapuato, Guanajuato, Mx) and I used to see this amazing car in the big banners by the highways. I have never forgiven this car in 15 years. A coupe-convertible with a 4-speed gearbox!? And every rally it kept getting stuck in 3rd gear! At least they got rid of it in 2005, but it wasn’t competitive enough against Citroën.
And then I watched Michael Park die in Wales *while standing on the same stage!*
Then Peugeot decided to put the old 2004 gearbox back in the car for Corsica. And guess what!? Like every gearbox problem in 2004, it got stuck in 3rd gear! That was my last straw for that 307.
At least Manfred Stohl gave it some redemption in 2006 by finishing 4th in the driver’s championship.

What's weird is that I'm sure that Gronholm said in Monte Carlo that in testing they never had really any issues with the car but it plagued them throughout 2004 especially the gearbox. It was a very quick car when it all came together. What's worse is that I saw on dirt fish an interview with Panizzi and they abandoned development of the 206 early and went the wrong way with the suspension which is why it wasn't to comeptetive to focus on the 307. If they hadn't stopped devlopment or changed the suspension they would have won in 2003 with the 2002 car in his opinion.
