- At first blush, leaving Italy to go in search of a beautiful vintage car seems as unnecessary as leaving Tahiti to look for the perfect beach. But when a man takes a fancy to a particular car, he sometimes has no choice but to cast a wider net.
Such is the story of Gianfranco Giovine and his 1954 Jensen 541. Perhaps he wanted to set himself apart from all the Lancias and Fiats and Alfa Romeos on Italy’s roads, or perhaps it was simply the challenge of tracking down a car that is seldom seen outside of Britain. Whatever the case, Giovine, after much searching and dreaming, finally found his car in Ireland, where he wasted no time in signing a sales contract and arranging for shipping back to Italy.
While Giovine has had to adjust to right-hand drive-a transition made all the more challenging by the narrow roads and streets around his hometown-he quickly developed a love affair with the car’s lines and with its powerful six-cylinder engine, a powerplant that shares much in common with the Austin Healeys of the day.
Much like a man might finally settle down after winning the love of the woman of his dreams, Giovine has no plans to part with his beloved Jensen.

"Like a beautiful woman, which made me suffer a bit before I could have it".... (memories)
scootosan This guy is amazing. Loved that comment too!
Gianfranco looks like the sort of Man who still enjoys a little bit of "suffering" now and again..
Kenny S A charming older Italian, I could imagine that he would still be a gentleman with the bella ragazzi :D
Toarcade le belle ragazze otherwise he would like guys...;o)
+Guillaume Laplanche Will a 1985 Alfa Spider with twin solex carbs do?
This guy lives the dream. Classic sportscar, beautiful mansion, and seems to have the Italian gentleman style, too. I love Italy ever since I visited it in my childhood for camping vacations every summer. So many memories... and the Italian mentality is full of enjoyment of the simple things like wine and pasta on a summer night. I would love to die in this country, maybe some day I move back to Europe and learn Italian.
I just Love the sounds and aromas of old European cars.
Varnished wood, leather, wool, petrol, oil and exhaust make for a heady mixture.
-European- British
jedw British = European
DrCrapsalot Well I am British and you insult me sir. Nevermind, I forgive your ignornance. Next time you come across anybody from a cuba I guess they are American right!
jedw I quote Wikipedia: "United Kingdom (UK) or Britain, is a sovereign state in Europe."
You just reminded me of my dad's old XJ6. An uncompleted project. Fully road-worthy, but with a few modern era items substituted in. Really didn't look right! Haha. Oh well.
This Channel makes the best videos on Automobiles ever. I enjoy watching every single one of them and they brighten my day to watch videos of owners who are so passionate about their cars and then the video is produced perfectly. well done I've watched every video you guys make and I really appreciate it. Thank you keep it up Petrolicious
Yes, agree 100%.
I agree 100% too!
My 1st one~and thirst of many. Hehe!
If only I could read all the captions; could do with being on blackout blocks
Thanks, guys❤️!
Lovely little sports car. If the car was up to it i would have driven it from Ireland to Italy
*****
how do you do that? where do you cross to?
Nice and stunning classic sport car, the old cars especially this type have a special essence
@@somervillearron Eurotunnel, by train.
A little sports car indeed, has got only a 4 l engine!
I used to live near the Jensen factory in West Bromwich. I'm sure the Italian owner of this lovely car [looks like an older Bristol car in some ways] will give it lots of tender loving care. .... thank you.
Im pressed an Italian liked the car enough to buy and drive it in right hand drive configuration.
Well done Sir.
Bravo!
Again a 'superb' documentary!!Love the sound of the car but also the sound of the Italian language.
Yet another Petrolicious video that makes me never want to set foot in a modern car ever again... Well done as always!
Another gorgeous video, thank you.
Couldn't agree more with the previous comments, Petrolicious capture cars, their stories and owners beautifully. Cinematography is atmospheric and offers a reserved and respectful glimpse into the lives of fellow enthusiasts the world over. Keep it up guys.
Congratulations, what a car and the film shows your passion. Enjoy. Thanks for sharing.
Wow. Yet another beautiful production! Oh boy, does that Jensen sound amazing!
God that sound, great car, amazing video!
Great video, cheers!
When he says he had to chase it like a beautiful woman with all the stuff that goes with chasing a beautiful woman. This is why italians get cars. They understand it is more than just ownership. Its a love affair.
My dad was from Veneto, I knew his dialect sounded familiar. What a perfect home for that awesome car
What a beauty! Love the sound.
I think I've found my new favourite car, part Aston , part Jag , part Tvr & what a sound , again another great Petrolicious video
Gorgeous car. He doesn't live in a half bad house either! :-)
That era of automobiles was astounding. So many achingly beautiful designs!
The cars that came before were nice enough (especially Bugatti) but never really rung my bell, and most things from 1970 on just lack something. There are beautiful cars from all eras, but the 50s-60s seems to have been the golden age for 2 seaters.
So much character. And what a great story. Nice one Petrolicious.
What a fantastic, along with a stunning car. Keep up the great work guys!
It looks indead in some ways like a classic Aston Martin. Very nice car!
What a beautiful sounding and looking car!
You guys make some of the best video's on youtube by far!
Thanks.
Beautiful car! Gorgeous Veneto scenery too! Pretty sure I spotted Asolo in there, driving by Cafe Centrale and the winged lion fountain. Love that place!
Love this car! Great story and video!
What a beautiful car.... the engine sounds awesome. Very nice videos on that channel.
Man you guys really do some great work. Keep it up. Love all the content.
What a sound!
very nice as usual, forget translation comments, only the mood is important, and you catch
the real flavor of the "classic spirit" un grand merci from France
I owned this car when it was registered SDF 273 and I was a student at Oxford. I miss it!
This actual car, or an identical model? Small world if so.. Gorgeous car though.
Andrew Giles are you the guy that got to fat to fit in it?
great vid
the curves on that car... wow
such a shame that there aren't many cars like that being produced anymore
Abosutely beautiful car. I am familiar with the older british sports cars of that time. Also wow that engine making 170 hp in that little car is a lot. And the sound it made as he made the left turn at the end was just amazing.
Phillip Gagliardi When it was released it was the fastest 4 seater car in the world. 170BHP was a lot in those days :0)
I always thought this was a cool looking car. The "grill" for lack of a better term, rear window(!), and the flares over the front wheel arches are so unique. I'd never heard one before now, and it sounds fantastic too!
Wow. Super Nice.
What a beautifull car! Really amazing.
la passione italiana regala grandi emozioni
Love this stuff.
What a beautiful car. I miss Jensen, Austin, Rover, and so many of the car companies I
grew up with. There cars weren't always the best, but every now and then they would produce a gem.
The rivals in the UK have been not Aston-Martin or Bentley but Alvis and Bristol !
Wonderful car.
Beautiful car!
Great looking car, would love to have one. Unfortunately, so expensive! Since I would also need to move to Europe to enjoy it.
Nice!
An italian enjoying a Jensen...
That's something special (should I say strange?)...
Such a nice car
wouldn't expected such a huge engine in such tiny car!
What beauty!
What an amazing car.
you make the most beautiful videos
I love a Jensen!
No. Ma dai. Non solo nel Veneto ma anche ad Asolo. Forte!
If anyone remembers watching a mid 1960s British TV show called The Baron ( about an American antique dealer based in London, doing detective and crime fighting on the side) starring Steve Forrest and Sue Lloyd. His car was a Jensen CV8,which has a similar body style as this 541. Nice car and it had Chrysler V8 engine instead of the lethargic Austin engine. The CV8 Jensen was the predecessor to the Jensen Interceptor, also with Chrysler V8 engine.
The 4 litre Austin engine powered the A125 Austin Princess. It was 125 HP with the Single Downdraft Zenith carb. I had a 1964 Austin Princess ! A70?
Nice sounding car !
You are right about the engine type but the presentation of this Jensen was in 1953 and at this time the 4 litre engine, which was presented in 1939 for the Princess Series and for the major car, A110 Austin, it produced about 118 hp net, which was just enough to reach for 180+ kilometres per hour. The 541 series was evolved and the last version 541 S from 1960 had a version of 137hp net, doing 192 km/h. Not enough anymore, so that the evolution CV-8 was equipped with a 330hp Chrysler Hemi Engine in 1962.
Lovely video, I am surprised to hear his comment that he finds it difficult to drive a rhd car in a lhd country, I live in a rhd country and drive a lhd 1960 F100 and find it no different in fact a little easier as I can drive as close as I dare to what ever is on my left side in knowledge that the right side of the car has more than enough room.
A stunning car ,very similar to an e type in my opinion :)
vista diverso tempo fa in piazza a Castelfranco...molto bella!
A lovely car
Would love to see you do a video on the jensen interceptor.
To me its the best looking car ever made.
This engine was not used in the A70.
But it was used in the Austin Sheerline, and in contemporary "Loadstar" lorries.
Can I ask what music is used in this clip? I cant get it out of my head
Can somebody tell me who the music is from
Thumbs up for the video in italian
Omg ...check that crib!
Music?
Question. Would that Austin motor ever fit in a Mini? Or am I out of my mind?
WAAAAAAAAAAAY too big sadly. It's a straight 6 cylinder, so much bigger than the Mini's straight 4
What happened to the subtitles on this one? Full of mistakes and errors, grammar, syntax, etc.
Just to clarify: it's not that it's impossible to understand what's said, but the production values of Petrolicious are generally so very high that I found it odd and slightly grating to see such basic errors pop up in the translated subs.
Like, c'mon Petrolicious, you're better than this! :)
Maybe it was a more literal translation for authenticity?
i want one
Engine sounds like a diesel low down, also very loud and high rpm for going so slow. And man there is a lot of rattles inside. It does look good however.
it took me 2 videos of Petrolicious to subscribe.
What happened to all the gorgeous, fiberglass-clad straight-six British sportscars?
They're mouldering in barns all over europe and the US with broken english mechanicals.
tvr were the last to build a true straight 6 british sports car with the tuscan speed 6, t350, tamora and sagaris from 2000 to 2006
+sam newman And fingers crossed..they are close to a return!
yea although the new car wont be a straight 6 and will most likely use an american v8
Probably right, LS of some description. I just hope they stick to the original recipe, simple engineering, beautiful design, big power, & great noise!
People used to say that this Car was based on VW's SP1 / SP2
how can a car made in the 1950's be based on a car from 1970's?
Only really stupid people like you..
e la location....Asolo!!!
I stopped watching when he talked about 'shipping' the car. To drive back from Ireland to Italy - what an adventure!
And what exactly is 'a freelance professional'?
I don't know but I'll look for that degree look at his house!
Why does it matter what he does? I personally couldn't care less. It's a show about cars..
interesting, an italian who is interested in a british sportscar.
Love this channel! (first)
XLPCX nobody cares if you were first to comment idiot
Terrible subtitles. Very difficult to read. Would be better encased in black box or bold text. Beautiful film tho.
itzajdmting See if you can get a higher resolution. I struggled with the subs until I watched it in HD. Much clearer then.
Kerry Moore I was watching in 720p. It's just where the white texts overlays white or bright parts of the screen it becomes invisible. The Italian motorcycle clip was more readable, but again, it's happenstance what background you end up with.
They'd make great subtitles for a film set in a cave!
Absolutely love the content, though. Beautiful films, from start to finish. Engaging, interesting and endearing stories. Top notch.
i dont like the body style of the car BUT interior is 10/10 and the exhaust note is 12/10 W O W
Instead of subtitles can you translate it by speaking?
Nice....Until he said Austin. ;)
I found it to be a pleasant surprise. A 4 litre Austin engine...never knew it existed
Kristofer Turner It must have been an engine made for trucks or large cars, so not well known in the sports car world. But that exhaust note, so deep and sweet, even if it is a truck motor, the sound it makes in this car forgives it's intended designI
Oldbmwr100rs
It's not a truck engine actually. It mainly powered the Austin Sheerline, which was a full-size luxury sedan - it's not so well-known today, but there was a time when a big Austin was a very prestigious car. Not quite a Rolls Royce or Bentley, but definitely out of reach of the middle class. Something for a named partner in a law firm, or a very successful doctor with a private practice. The 4-litre engine very smooth, Jensen added such niceties as a high-compression Weslake head and extractor manifolds to make a bit racier than the plain version, which was very much a loafer.
Interesting about the Austin. I have seen a few of the old large sedans on British programs, and even an old one at a car dealership years ago. I'm sure with it's displacement it was quite torquey and smooth. I really liked the low crisp exhaust note of that jensen, it was icing on the cake with that beautiful car.
A freelance professional what?!? Lovely car but if you've ever driven a RH drive on the continent you know it ain't fun for a couple of weeks let alone all the time. I couldn't have a LH drive car in England - would drive me mad.
I don't think this is a particularly good video. Some of the Petrolicious videos are very well made but not this one. In truth we never really get to see that car. Endless close up shots but so few shots showing the whole car and all shots are too fleeting.
A minor gripe is that the subtitles are sometimes hard to make out because you have used only white lettering which will disappear when there is white in the video.
The interview with the owner turned out well though. But that feeling of not really seeing the car is so annoying.
Jensen interceptor !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Errata: First appearance 1953 London Motor Show. Why no comments about the plastic coachwork, the moving air-intake paddel, the curved plexi rear window which must be exchanged because of the matting from the sun. Nothing... No really informations. Too much bla-bla about the shipping. Not intersting!!
Playtime Hulot fuck up
Sounds just like the loud-ass jeep some guy who lives near me drives. "Amazing sound" heh, sounds like a farty, understrung I6 to me.
