  • Use a 3,4,5 triangle to lay out a 90-degree corner when preparing to install a fence. All you need is a few stakes, some string, and a couple of tape measures to use this simple tip for making perfectly square corners every time.

Thank you for this. Building a fence tomorrow and all I need to know is how to make it square. I knew 345 but I didn’t understand it. I’m so glad I found this two minute video. I didn’t have to waste my time with some 20 minute mumbo-jumbo to be explained to me what can be done in two minutes.

In math class these sorts of hands-on applications should be taught, else we forget rules like the 3,4,5 or don't know how to use them.

I might play this video for a math class, as a practical use of the Pythagorean Theorem

If it’s not straight, you won’t be square.

Can you do this for a deck ledger to get parallel to ledger for post holes?

You can use this method for squaring up any project. Just be sure to use bigger multiples of the 3,4,5 triangle for larger projects (so you could measure 3-4-5, 6-8-10, 9-12-15, 12-16-20, 15-20-25, etc.)
