Interesting, I'm looking for a cheap method for an auto door opener. The prices are crazy for prebuilt doors!
Love the clock! If you don't want motors etc, consider my chicken-o-matic (search on You Tube for it). It uses an irrigation timer, a hose, a lever and a bucket. It is programmed to open and shut when I want (but I still visit em!).The water is recycled to fill the chooks' water bowl up too. No electricity needed (apart from a battery for the timer). Cost is minimal and it celebrates the principles of leverage and simplicity. No problems for us in New Zealand with snakes or foxes - we have none.
I can't imagine NOT having one. I don't have to worry about rushing home to shut the door or walking through a foot of snow to let them out. The cost is cheap to install one if you factor the amount of time you save over the course of their lives opening and closing the door. We have doggy doors to, I calculated that I was spending an hour a day putting 4 dogs on runs so I knew that I'd have to put in an Automatic Chicken Coop Door. My video is posted as well.
You can use the mechanism of a PC CD driver.
wouldn't it be easier just to slide the door open

i don't know if i really believe in the automatic door. i think a person should get up and spend time with there chickens... i myself have done this my whole life and lived on a farm..

I did switch to mounting it vertically when I got a larger coop.

In the end though I replaced with an electronic door opening & closing mechanism that was not too expensive on eBay.
