Intro to Fasting: • Fasting for Catholics
Gabi's recommended fasting supplements:
I am not a medical professional. This is only my opinion and my experience.
When fasting for 20 hours or more I recommend taking electrolytes... my preferred electrolyte brand is LMNT variety pack. When fasting 36 hours + I like to drink warm bone broth powder (brand paleo valley) with unflavored LMNT... this is also good if you are doing a super long fast and wanting to re-feed. LMNT and Paleo Valley brand bone broth powder can be obtained on Amazon. Do not do fasts longer than 40 hours without doing some research. If you are underweight or underage consider an equally difficult alternative to fasting such as carnivore. With all things use prudence and consult a physician if you have any questions.

Fasting is incredible octane for prayer. I started fasting Wednesdays and Fridays a few years back. The graces that came from that were amazing. I not only got prayers answered, I got other little “gifts” I didn’t even know I needed!

I've actually decided a few weeks ago that I will be fasting 40 hours weekly starting Friday 3pm until Sunday morning. I haven't actually started yet but this video has motivated me. I have a lot of areas in my life that need fasting and prayer.

When I used to live in Connecticut I had 2 friends who were 3rd order Franciscans with them and they used to organize Day With Mary one day retreats with Friars at different parishes in our diocese. Thank you Gaby, this video was an answer to my prayers. I had an abusive husband for 8 years who is a narcissist. Till this day, even after the divorce, he still enjoys harrasing me and poisoning my 7 year old son against me. I have been praying the 4 rosaries for a while and fasting one day a week but he still won't leave me or my son alone. Hurting & manipulation makes him feel alive.
I will definitely do the 40 day fasting & mental prayer.

I found this to be true. The old Latin tradition is to fast every day during Lent, even Sundays until 3 p.m. No meat, eggs, or dairy throughout Lent. Then, also, throughout the year, every quarter, there are ember days. Three days to pray and fast for our priests.

I have been attending the Franciscans of the Immaculate chapels daily for many years now. ( M.A.& C.T.) I will be making my Marian Vow in November with their third order. I can say my spiritual life has grown in ways I could never even imagine. Consider attending a Day with Mary with the Friars or attending one of their locations, you will not be disappointed. Gabi I’ve always tried to imagine the scene of whichever decade I’m praying years before I knew about mental prayer, but recently I’ve been trying to pray 4 rosaries a day (to beat a mortal sin) but in order to do that I pray the rosary while driving to/from work as that’s the only time I have - it’s hard to concentrate on the road and be so focused on each mystery 😂 surely god understands that I’m doing my best?

At the Solemnity of Pentecost I got fully baptized into the Holy Spirit. No kidding. I'd never been to this mass as a Catholic. 2 yes ago I got confirmed. Anyways when our priest was going around the Cathedral and splashing Holy water on us as the Most Beautiful prayer/hymn was being sung I got hit from behind with the water and I felt it pierce me through and as it pierced it shoved out the negative that has held me in thrall.
I am free. I am 70 years old and He gave me back myself. The person I was always supposed to be and I'm so humbled. This mental prayer got me here. Perseverance. The woman being stoned for adultery at the Temple in front of our Lord was who I used to be and worse. God is Live and He is real and He wants to give Himself to us.
Please let Him.

Gabi, is life supposed to get harder when you pray the rosary and consecrate your life and children to Mary? I have found that since praying the rosary every day my life has had more suffering, my children’s lives in terms of their hobbies and sports achievements have gotten worse, I have gotten even more depressed than I already was. My attempts at trying to volunteer for our local parish and even try to get to talk with my local priest are not happening so I figured at least help from the church would be easier to be available. No, that hasn’t happened either. I pray for guidance every day but my life just keeps getting worse and worse. Is suffering one of the things you gain when you become more devoted? Suffering in this world? I am asking honestly because I just don’t know anymore. My life before finding Jesus was depressing, terrible and full of suffering. After finding Jesus for the first few weeks it felt like things might actually change but now, two months into praying the rosary and trying to learn as much as I can about the faith my life is exactly if not worse than where it was when I began my journey. Is this a normal occurrence? Are we supposed to give up on ever achieving anything in this life in order to be more holy? To be acceptable to God? Because that’s the conclusion I am coming to now. I am even more isolated and alone than I was before starting this journey as the few people I had in my life think I’m crazy for even believing in the power of God. Which is fine, but I figured I would find people or at least one person in real life that actually followed Jesus in the Catholic faith. It’s easy to say, well I have Jesus and Mary so I’m not alone. I’m pretty sure as humans we are meant to have other humans around us too. Otherwise why even bother allowing us to experience this life? I am not trying to fight anyone or be mean but this is where my feeble mind has led me. I am completely lost. More lost than ever.
I hear you. Firstly, never give up. Pray the Three traditional Rosary, Joyful, Sorrowful and Glorious mysteries daily. Then add Divine Mercy. If u have time, you can add Luminous mystery. Say your intentions before praying Holy Rosary.
Pray for my nephew, Rio De Ramada.. He's now in prison for drugs possession offence .. pray for my dearly nephew. Dear Mother Mary be our mother..
I use to do 3, 7, 21, or 40 day water fasts as a Pentecostal pastor. Taking nothing but water. I couldn’t do it nowadays. But I thank God for his Holy Church to bring balance and harmony. I’m also in the MI. God bless you brother Gabi!

Did you use to see the fruit of such extended fasting?
I fast 18-24h before my chemotherapy treatments. The longest I've ever done was somewhere ~38h. I was going for 48 but couldn't make it :/
It's hard for me to fast because my wife is overweight so she loves food, and I also don't like seeing food going to waste in my fridge.
I do intermittent fasting, and fast almost every day. It is incredible for good health of mind and body. And before an importnat situation, I pray "Come Holy Spirit, Come".

Hi @ Gabi, yourr teachings are so great. Should one be taking these electrolytes att the end of the fast or in between, say if you are fasting 24 hrs, 36hrs or 40 hrs.?

I take them in the middle.... and if you are doing 40 hrs... bone broth powder with unflavored electrolytes in hot water... you will be surprised that the pain of hunger isn't as bad when your muscles work and your brain is clear.

So should I completely just not eat anything those 40 hours. I’m asking to be crystal clear not to complain or anything. This might be a dumb obvious question but should I fast from nicotine and caffeine also in addition to not eating. And just to be clear it is completely from any food whatsoever correct.
A final question is that I have to take my multivitamin with iron everyday but it says take with food. When I have taken it without food, I get nauseous, but that is the worst part of it so it’s not like I go into shock or pass out. So should I eat a piece of bread for that or should I purposely get the nauseousness and also offer that up.
I am asking these things so I have a clear task and purpose with very defined guidelines and so I know not to divert from it.
Vitamins are fine. I recommend no food. Zero calories, except for your electrolytes. Check out the video I linked in the description. Up to you if you want to do coffee or caffeine. Pray about it.

Fasting in adoration nonstop except restroom and 2 Masses per day is excellent while praying Liturgy of Hours and full Rosary in Latin. Highly reccomended! Yes we all have excuses... but we either do it or don't. The Light of Eternity will shine forever on our choices now... Pax Christi+ 🙏📿✝️⛪️🌎😇

Gabi, I’d like to try fasting. I’m prediabetic and if I go quite a while without eating I get really shaky and my blood sugar gets a little low. I’m not on medication but control it with diet. What else can I do? I’m doing 4 rosaries a day and your consecration to Mary.
You can fast from processed foods and all junk foods and treats. None of those are necessary to keep diabetes in check.
Working on that! My hubby has to be low sodium so I’m cooking more from scratch but I do love sweets! But are limiting those of course. Thanks! It would definitely be a sacrifice to stop sweets all together. Don’t use canned or boxed foods much anymore.

I’m glad you asked, I have a similar question. Personally I think the idea of a phone fast is an excellent thing to offer to Our Lord. There are surely many non-food related ways we can sacrifice something for the love of Jesus. I have multiple health conditions and disabilities. I know that fasting even 24 hours has a risky impact on me. I am not in a position to afford expensive electrolyte supplements either. These issues of health, circumstances, finances, etc will be the case for so many people surely. The purpose of a fast surely is increasing in humility and love of Jesus, Mary and Joseph and uniting our will wholly to his, being with Him in His Passion, and I’m not sure that that can only be attained through a food fast, let alone a 40 hour one. If you can do that then that’s wonderful but as Gabi said we also know our weakness and so does God; if we begin by offering wholeheartedly and honestly our best with the most love possible then personally I think wherever that is, that’s where we should start, not feel guilty because we can’t do the same as the next person. Don’t get me wrong, I do appreciate what Gabi is teaching about the particular way a food fast unites us with Christ’s sacrifice, and I fully agree we all need to fast, I just don’t think that it’s going to look like 40 hours no food at all for every person. I’d be really interested to hear Gabi’s thoughts.
