  • Part 4 of "Vestri's" maiden voyage from Sidney, BC, to Campbell River, BC sees us crossing the Strait of Georgia. We leave Nanamio harbor via Departure Bay and spend about 3 hours crossing the open waters before ducking behind some islands again and arriving at Secret Cove.
    The crossing goes well, and we spend the night at Secret Cove Marina. The video provides footage from leaving Nanaimo, crossing Georgia Strait, and heading into Secret Cove on BC's Sunshine Coast.

    The water in the marina was so calm in the morning. We used to water-ski in Texas, and my momma would say, "The water is as smooth as glass." It made for great skiing.

    B C is such a beautiful area , but with all the currents and tides you can be glad that you have a good skipper . Loved it when “ Ran Sailing “ and “ Sailing Emerald Steel “ we’re in that area . Stay safe and enjoy the good weather 😉 !

    Hey, Ray. Responding from our sailing channel. I normally respond from R/V Footprints, but tonight am watching sailing vids. Really nice to hear that you two are thinking more about anchoring out. Our anchor of preference is the Mantus. It has really really great holding, and has served us well while in a gale at Catalina Island. Our scope is normally about 5 to 1.

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  Před rokem +1

      Yes, there are scads of beautiful free anchorages along the coast of BC so hope to mostly use them once we have the boat fully decked out for off grid. We just spend a couple days at one called Ballet Bay, will be in the next video. We have a Maxwell windless and Lewmar 44 lb. claw anchor with 50 feet of chain and 250 feet of rope. Seems to do a good job.

    • @SailBeforeSunset
      @SailBeforeSunset Před rokem

      @@LoveYourRV That sounds completely adequate for where you're voyaging. We also have a Maxwell and love it. No gale force winds in your area?

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  Před rokem

      Yes, but generally the big storms happen from mid October until spring when we are away RVing. We will also spend most of our time in the waters along the southern BC coast protected by Vancouver Island with scads of other islands and bays, coves, inlets to hide out in. We crossed one time in a Meridian 49 with a following sea with 5 foot swells. We would surf as the swells overtook us. We would go from 15 to 18 knots as we " surfed" It was fun.

    Hey Ray and Anne,
    That was such a good video! I'll be looking forward to the next one. Thanks! How much does it cost to fill up a tank of gas?

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  Před rokem

      The dual diesel fuel tanks add up to 250 gallons or about 950 liters. Fuel at the docks in these parts is running about $1.80 per liter so that's $1710 CAD With current exchange rates about 1289 USD The boat uses about 1.5 - 2 gallons per hour. So it can cruise for a lot of hours when filled up.

    Ann love your new to you boat. I understand your love for the water since you grew up in that beautiful place. Ray really surprised with the low wake for that boat and just a question is the engine that loud or is it the mic?

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  Před rokem +3

      Economical to buy and run but still with a decent amount of living space. Very seaworthy. Also, lots of room on deck and can walk all around the boat. The maintenance is fairly simple and straightforward for DIY. Biggest downside is its slow, but the boating we will do will be extended living aboard so no need to go fast. :)

    Hey, Ray. I am enjoying the journey with you and Anne. A question: does she ever let you helm the boat? ;-)

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  Před rokem +1

      On occasion take over if she needs a rest or bathroom break. I took an online course and test to get my Pleasure Craft Operator Card so I could be a back up if need be. But I leave the navigation and piloting as her domain. She loves it and has over 30 years experience on the ocean. I have plenty of work to do with stuff she physically can't do and the maintenance, repairs, etc.

    Thanks Ray! Is it your plan to spend the entire summer on your boat? It would be cool to circle Vancouver island.

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  Před rokem +3

      We will spend July in both the boat and the RV, then store the RV for August, September, and part of October, then switch and take the RV south in November. Circling Vancouver Island would be dicey. The west is exposed to the open Pacific Ocean, and the seas and weather can get hairy. We will travel on the east side and explore all the islands and inlets between VI and the mainland.

      It gave us 30 amp electric and potable water. No sewer though. Some places have black tank vacuum pump out stations but this little marina didn't. We can dump our holding tank at sea if far enough away from the shore.

    • @greghomestead8366
      @greghomestead8366 Před rokem +1

      @LoveYourRV dump at sea?
      That's the same thing we do with our travel trailer, if we're far enough out in the country we dump on the back roads.
      Just kidding 😂 😉😲

  • @ColinJ388
    @ColinJ388 Před rokem +1

    I'm curious, how does someone get out of the marina when boats are boxed in (like the one in front of Vestri at the end of the video)? Is the etiquette just that those people are stuck there until you leave, or is etiquette that you would pull out of the way if asked? I feel like it's a lot of work to pull a trawler away from the slip so it'd be rather frustrating if you docked just to have to un-dock an hour or so later if they wanted to leave?

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  Před rokem +1

      On long docks like that the marina staff usually sort out who is coming and going and when and so can stack the boats. But that trawler left early that morning using its bow and stern thrusters it moved sideways and creep out slowly beside us.
