Both glossy and matte will essentially look the same under controlled conditions. The problem here is that the monitors use different panels. Mate on the laptop that i use in a lot of places and can't control ambient light, glossy in the desktop where i have the control of the ambient light... Still if i had to choose only one I'd go for matte every time...
The Mac book pro screen is also one of higher quality besides being glossy, so while this video outlines the basic differances, it doesn't really help people to have a good conclusion on whats better for what.
I love Matte screens. I have a matte screen protector on my iPhone and matte screen protector on my Mac. Don't know why I like em so much. I like the way it feels, looks everything. I guess i'm weird like that. lol
i worked in the screen industry for 7 + years and i mean we shipped thousands of screens world wide. We had so many issues with people going on and on how i want glossy and not matte and vice versa. Gloss looks ok at night but the gimmick really came about on marketing.. People are attracted to things that shine . It was a way that the major chains like best buy got people to become interested in buying a laptop. Shiny car anyone? would you buy a car that had a matte finish? , course not.
I like Matte for coding, writing, and most work stuff and Glossy for media and web design stuff. Have two external displays matte and glossy best of both worlds. If you spend most time gamer or media glossy is better. If you spend most time writing or working matte is better.
+bruno couto depends on the environment you work in, but matte is generally the go to option there. Do reflections bother you? Go with matte. Want the best looking panel? Go with glossy.
+M390VI Actually, some days ago I ordered an Asus laptop, quite slim, a X555 model. But the screen annoyed me, it could reflect the light to the point that I had to try to adjust the screen in many angles until I had it right. Another thing about it, it is HD with a 15.6" screen. All characters seem blurred. And the colors looked washed out, I hated looking at it. I am considering an ips full hd dell notebook, it has a glossy screen, but the colors look vibrant an I guess it won't leave my sight tired
+bruno couto IPS is the way to go, there is really very few reasons to go for a TN panel nowadays. Asus has some nice matte 1080p ips laptops. ux305 comes to mind, it is a nice one for portability and comparatively cheap, but it is a fanless 13.3" model. Have no personal experience with modern Dell laptops, but I hear their XPS line are top notch.
+M390VI I live in Brazil, and here the options are quite limited. And the options available are not cheap. One TN laptop with 4 gb ram and no video board with an i3 processor may reach the price of R$ 2,000.00. divide that value for 3.55 to know how much you would pay in dollar. The dell I was talking about is more than R$, 4,000.00 (I think I put the commas and dots in the right order, lol). I have one Sony Vaio VPC F236FM /B American model. Full hd, a not so reflexive screen that has crisp characters. Seriously, before I knew that a matte display gives a blur to the screen in exchange for antireflexive properties, I thought my Vaio had it. Not sure if it's matte or glossy, it is so nice to work on it. But then, some keys stopped working. Impractical to work on it. Can't replace the keyboard for Brazilian keyboards don't match the model. And the membrane keyboard I've been working with is horrible. Well, I guess I should go with dell this time, let's hope it's gonna last for a long time. Sorry for the really long text, I guess I was ranting
bruno couto That's fairly expensive for an entry level i3 based laptop, and that's coming from a place where prices are generally at least 25% higher than what they are in the US. I think you can get an original replacement keyboard module for about US$20, don't know if it's an replacement on that model but keyboard replacements are usually not too difficult once you have the correct part. No worries about the length of the comment, it sucks that you have to pay so much compared to most other places.
Actually, it would help if the screens weren't pointing almost directly at the ceiling lights. In most cases the gloss screens are loads better as far as color vividness, just adjust the screen angle.
Patrick Musson Good point, although my issue with glossy screens is it all depends on your environment as to how easy they are to view, if you're in an office / classroom and have a strong light behind you (such as a window or fluorescent lighting) then you're out of luck. If you're at home and can easily adjust lighting and position you are in the room, less of a big deal.
I personally prefer a matte screen for college. You've got to stare a lot of time at the screen, and having headaches because of the reflections just won't help.
yet if you put 2 of the same panels side by side the effect would be pretty much the same. I've seen direct comparisons and it's night and day difference in colors between matte and glossy, even when anti-reflective coating was removed from a matte screen or added to a glossy screen, only a blind person wouldn't see a vast difference in display quality\colors.
@@Vik1919 You should always adjust a notebook's screen by holding it in the middle. This equalizes the stress on the hinges, and will make them last a lot longer.
I have a Lenovo laptop that came with a 1920*1080 display glossy. In just over 1 week, I had this headache that kept me in the hospital for over two weeks. Now I am never going to touch a glossy screen with a 9 foot pole
Still love matte screen better. I have a RMBP and a thinkpad X230 and I love both of them. But sometimes when i work or study, matte screen literally makes me feel better.
Thanks man. What a genius idea to compare these. I just picked up the Thinkpad T14 with e-privacy filter. I love it so far but the narrow viewing angle is killing me!
I could be wrong but I think that most people don't do all the time video/photo editing that require the color accuracy of a glossy screen, besides, if you that kind of work you may want to plug in an external bigger monitor anyway. For everything else, matte will outweight glossy big time. Personally I would love an iPhone with a matte screen, but I know that ain't gonna happen.
it's not just better for photo and video eiding, glossy screens have better colors in general.... I've been using both for many years and colors on glossy ones are far more vivid and better-looking, while mat screens look dull and lifeless. I wish Dell XPS 15 2016 and 2017 models had a glossy version for 1080p screens, but I guess that's never gonna happen? cause they only have glossy version for impractical 4k screen.
TabalugaDragon Actually I do think that glossy is a far better quality, but I am really bothered when I see something reflected on the screen and since I use my laptop pretty much everywhere I prefer matte. I can't appreciate the quality of the picture or even concentrate when I clearly see people walking behind me on the screen (while in a coffee shop), but that's just me, some people may feel different.
well, matte is obviously better for situations where you're using laptop outside, especially under bright light. I use my laptop at home 90% of time and light is never really bright in here
The colors is not better because it is glossy, it is better because it is better panels and maybe adjusted differently. I have tried many screens and on the macs that have same screen with both matte and glossy color and contrast looks the same. I personally hate glossy screens and in the old days of CRT monitors they used to have anti glare coating that is a must have for a glossy screen if you don`t want to look at yourself all day... Having glossy screens without anti glare coating is not a good idea.
actually the matte surface of the screen doesn't only serve the purpose of scattering light from the display, it actually does the same thing FROM THE INSIDE. It's simple physics, it works both ways, which is exactly why, given the same panels glossy ones look better. I compared the exact same laptops side by side, where the only difference was screen covering, and glossy ones clearly have the advantage
I MUCH prefer glossy. Blacks are black, not gray. Colors are richer, contrast better, and very small text is easier to read. Reflections can be negated or ignored, unless you're OCD. NewEgg and Amazon should specify glossy or matte in their specs. It's maddening to find whether a monitor is glossy of matte. If you think matte is better, ask your eye doctor for some matte eye glasses, or your car dealer for a matte windshield. If matte is better, why do they use it to obscure shower doors? :)
I'd say for entertainment glossy but for office work matte. Decades ago it's discovered that the reflections in the screen would ruin your eye sight as you cannot "decide" which picture to focus: your work on the monitor or the things going on beyond it - behind you...
I just started having eyesight issues, I think it's from staring at computer screens for so long. I really hope people start to become more aware of the harm of blue light, reflective screens and how the screen brightness is controlled. Poor screens can damage eyesight.
I plan on buy the matte but thx for your video.. I have to think it again. As a digital artist, seeing the color comparation really suprised me, glossy had more color.. but I hate it when the lamp behind me reflected on the screen
My MSI prestige laptop had IPS matte display and i loved it. Unfortunately it broke so i had to replace it with new one. New screen is also matte screen but it has screen protector on it which makes it look glossy. I choose not to peel it off. Now my screen is glossy. I don't know why but i like it more now and it has no undesirable effect on the colour of the screen.
These are two entirely different screens(IPS vs TN), set at entirely different points of contrast, brightness, and colour temperature. My colorimeter-calibrated Matte gaming monitor would blow that Macbook out of the water.
I've got a 2012 Macbook Pro and a recent upgrade in the from of a MSI GS65 Stealth Thin. I was, I am still pretty upset that the 2k MSI's display is dim! We're talking 7 years of technological advancements, the one thing I didn't think needed researching was the frigging display! It's a 2k laptop, 1080p and just compared to my mac that's a Duo Core i5, Integrated graphics, 4GB RAM (loooooool), 500GB HD (loooooooooo). Whereas my MSI GS65 is an i7-8750h 6 core, GTX 1070, 32GB Ram, 500Gb SSD, just an all around beast of an upgrade and going back to my (long lost love) windows roots. Yet I still have to watch movies on my 2012 mac because despite colour accuracy being better on GS65 the brightness is terrible. Dark scenes in a movie you pretty much can't tell what's going on. GoT which features many a darker scenes is a no brainer, have to watch on the mac. Actually considering buying a 3rd frigging laptop because can't find 1 that has it all? Uggggggh! (1st world problems much? 😋😋😋).
yeah, lenovo has had some other troubles with suppliers in recent times. there was a defective batch of EEPROM chips going out at one point during the time my refurb E420 was originally built, and my motherboard died a couple months after the purchase of this laptop. interestingly, it always emitted a high pitched whine while on, and after they replaced my motherboard under warranty in about 3 days (including shipping, awesome service) I never heard the whine again. Suppliers, man...
Definitely if it's a Matte screen it has to be an IPS screen I had two laptops with IPS Matte screens (an ASUS with a 15" and a Samsung with a 13") and they were both excellent then recently I tried an HP with a a matte Non-IPS screen and it really annoyed me (I think maybe the matte finish makes the non-IPS darker areas a lot more noticeable bc with the Matte screens you really got to boost the contrast and brightness to make the picture pop but if it's not IPS then any area that you aren't looking straight at is going to appear darker (with the matte screen that means whites and light colors will appear fuzzier) so if you get a Matte screen it's got to be an IPS screen, the only problem there is unless you buy it used or refurbished laptops with iPS usually cost $1000 or more so most people these days don't spend that much for their laptop (probably $400 to $700 is average these days).
Although this is out of stock now, a few days ago I purchased this IPS matte laptop for $779 (now its $799). Its all about looking for sales. www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834233157
Even with a computer with a matte screen which has the best graphics cards and all that jazz, I still think Glossy will always look's more hd with hd displays. I remember going from my MacBook Pro (newest one without the touch bar) which has a super HD display this is easy to look at display compared to matte screen and I can say that it was so grainy even with some of the best graphics installed they look not as hd to me as the Glossy screen on my MacBook Pro. Even though my computer is only 13" It is very easy to look at because of how HD it is and for anyone with sensitive or crappy eyesight HD is better to look at for your eyes than blurry non hd displays. Also Blue light filters where you can change the colour are very good for your eyes, just test some out to see like the colour. Blue light filters are not good for digital or video editing for sure so you can turn them off if you are doing that, but they have really helped my sensitive eyes get less dry and my brain working properly for sleep during night time. Flux which I have on my computer makes the blue light filter more intense during night and there is less of a filter I set for daytime and it changes based on my location and hardly uses any battery on my computer to run which is nice. Anyways, I would rather have a small screen (not super small) with HD display than a big one with a display that is not very HD.
Great insights Harrison, and I especially like your comments about the blue light levels of a display as that is something rarely ever talked about but a major factor for me as well. Asus actually makes some monitors called "Eye care monitors" that have low flicker and very low blue light emission, which are very cool. But if you don't have hardware to help with bluelight then you can either use Flux or Windows 10 Night Light settings or Night Shift on a Mac to adjust blue light via software. I also wear blue light filtering glasses with 1.0x magnification which really help reduce my eye strain.
Nowdays there is almost no choice of what to get, matte or glossy, I hate that. Like 99% of modern laptops are matte. That "take your pick" in the end of the video doesn't apply anymore :(
This is not a fair comparison. They are 2 completely different laptops and displays. The Macbook obliviously has a higher contrast ratio and probably resolution then the Lenovo (Who isn't known for their brilliant displays as they are marketed towards business pros). Its no different then buying TV, monitors or what not. Each one is different even if by the same manuf. The coating or finish on top the screen doesn't do much to improve "Quality" per say. Its the hardware underneath that is driving the display.
I cannot stand glossy screens due to the glare. I'm seriously surprised some one thought this a good idea and its become so popular. For me totally impractical. I'd never change from my matte screen.. On glossy though the image is definitely sharper.
glossy is better. If you are getting some reflection anyway, it's better to get a glossy screen. At least you get to see what's making your picture look bad.
absolute nonsense... If you take glossy screen outside on summer, you can basically just throw it to the garbage, cause you wont be able to use it at all. You wont see anything on the screen, because all reflections are brighter than the light coming from the monitor
I was trying to choose which laptop to buy 13, 14 or 15". I fancied the lenovo yoga with a 14" but it has a total glossy screen which I think will be a problem. I'm so confused right now. I feel like sticking with my old laptop. In fact feck it! I'm going to live in a tree....
I'm so confused now. This watch?v=CWM33BgKzvM shows that the colors are much better in the dark on the MATTE, but your video shows that the GLOSSY is better...
If you work professionally and possibly working while you are travelling the only chose can be matte screen if you want to prevent headache. Glossy screen deflect and mirror anything. It's quite surprising that Apple, at least for their Pro series, do not offer matte screen anymore. It seems that everyone just wants to play with their MacBooks......
Agreed, for laptop brands that don't even offer a matte screen you could get a 3M privacy filter that will help reduce glare amzn.to/2B1pHHY you just won't get wide viewing angles from the sides. You could also install your own screen after market, but who really wants to pay more on top of what you already pay when it comes to a MacBook!
Yoy have the choice with Macbooks. And you're wrong - glossy looks better in lower light conditions, matte looks better in bright light. It all depends on your environment as to which screen is more suitable.
Matte screen all the way! I am using a Samsung Ativ book. It's less painful for the eyes and a lot more advantage, for me atleast. I even use a matte protector on my iphone. :) (personal opinion)
It looks like the matte screen in this video needs calibrated? I have a matte screen and the colors are super vibrant with excellent contrast etc. It looks the same as my glossy screen... I think as long as the matte screen is calibrated with brightness, contrast, gamma & vibrance correctly it should look no different than a glossy screen
After years of using mate I prefer glossy and here's why: with Glossy you can control your environment and the light and get the superior visual benefits it has over Mate. Since mate is merely an anti glare film that makes the image fuzzy and cloudy you can't remove it and you're stuck with the same thing forever. it looks as if someone came on your screen and tried to wipe it off.
You can't compare any screen with any of the google products even if this is matte, glossy, light-y, etc. (Including iPhone, iPad, or Mac) If you want to show the difference, please use the same level's products. Please take this as my suggestion, I am not blaming anything on you.
matte screens are obviously best however... this ain't 2012 anymore :( your choice is usually either - the laptop with the specs / form factor you want OR a matte screen... basically we have to live with glossy on laptops now, and it sucks... big time... but... the manufacturers do it for a reason, it looks prettier in store so easier to make a sale.
The quality on glossy screens are much better that's true, but what's the point if you can only use them in darkness? Even the slightest light reflection is a pure nightmare on glossy screens. Maybe I'm just sensitive but if I had to use a notebook with glossy screen outside during the day or in bright places I would smash it after 10 minutes.
Glossy screen was used only on cheap laptops. Oh yeah, for apple fanatics, you can pay 3K for a simple laptop and still get a glossy screen. We are humans, there will always be sun, lights etc. around us. Glossy can be a real pain so stick with Matte.
The glossy screen is better, becaouse you see when someone is going to atack you from behind, u gota love it, a life saver...

Nice explanation! So, I'm choosing my laptop for work, I'm gonna be looking to the monitor for quite long...
...Matte for me, right?
Interesting demo, thanks for the video!
damn, this helped me a lot, good job
Thank you. you answered all my questions. Awesome video.
This is such horseshit. They're absolutely different panels. Nothing to do with being clear or matte.
yet if you put 2 of the same panels side by side the effect would be pretty much the same. I've seen direct comparisons and it's night and day difference in colors between matte and glossy, even when anti-reflective coating was removed from a matte screen or added to a glossy screen, only a blind person wouldn't see a vast difference in display quality\colors.
good video. You're right about how the screens are more clear
Who else cringed when he adjusted the screen angle by pushing down on the side, rather than in the correct place - the middle at the top?
who cares?
@@Vik1919 You should always adjust a notebook's screen by holding it in the middle. This equalizes the stress on the hinges, and will make them last a lot longer.
I have a Lenovo laptop that came with a 1920*1080 display glossy. In just over 1 week, I had this headache that kept me in the hospital for over two weeks. Now I am never going to touch a glossy screen with a 9 foot pole
Still love matte screen better. I have a RMBP and a thinkpad X230 and I love both of them. But sometimes when i work or study, matte screen literally makes me feel better.
even better? GET TWO MONITORS, I have one of each depending on what task I'm doing
That's what I have.
It's better, because it is a glossy screen. Anti-glare makes all colors look gray.
z ahio not in the dark, no
zeebazu
You can't argue with facts.
actually the matte surface of the screen doesn't only serve the purpose of scattering light from the display, it actually does the same thing FROM THE INSIDE. It's simple physics, it works both ways, which is exactly why, given the same panels glossy ones look better. I compared the exact same laptops side by side, where the only difference was screen covering, and glossy ones clearly have the advantage
I will be using my laptop in a variety of environments, so matte will be my choice
1:48 the brightness was way, way different, i can't tell about the colors at all. i'd take the TP X1 any day though
he does have a point...if they are identical then the screens would be identical...I know you can choose either option for some laptops
+Laptop Review Cannabinoids can protect our eyes from damage!
I plan on buy the matte but thx for your video.. I have to think it again. As a digital artist, seeing the color comparation really suprised me, glossy had more color.. but I hate it when the lamp behind me reflected on the screen
This really helped ❤
very helpful thanks man
My MSI prestige laptop had IPS matte display and i loved it. Unfortunately it broke so i had to replace it with new one. New screen is also matte screen but it has screen protector on it which makes it look glossy. I choose not to peel it off. Now my screen is glossy. I don't know why but i like it more now and it has no undesirable effect on the colour of the screen.
Exactly like me.. i didnt peel the glossy screen protector that comes with the matte screen.. and i like it xD
Not a valid comparison because you have two different computers, one needs same computer model to have valid comparison
Glossy screens has more clarity for watching movies..
TheGuyWithTheBratzDollz
but why?
TheGuyWithTheBratzDollz
no never
These are two entirely different screens(IPS vs TN), set at entirely different points of contrast, brightness, and colour temperature. My colorimeter-calibrated Matte gaming monitor would blow that Macbook out of the water.
Your matte screen has some glare, most likely a tft. Best matte screen are TN panels. Although they all gone IPS crazy these days

They really need to come out with semi gloss screens
Also, glossy=fingerprint/smudge magnet..and matte isn't
Nowdays there is almost no choice of what to get, matte or glossy, I hate that. Like 99% of modern laptops are matte. That "take your pick" in the end of the video doesn't apply anymore :(
I love matte screen and my HP mini has a matte screen. I choose mat.scr because I mostly use my netbook outdoors. Thanks for the video.
Good description🤘🏽
there are other factors than glossy/matte which affect color quality
On glossy though the image is definitely sharper.
yesss i agree. i love matte screens for laptop
Very nice explanation. Well done.
It's not the glossy screen that helps the colors pop but AMOLED rather than IPS used in thinkpad.
Thank you, this video helped me a lot. :)
So basically for in car screen, I think glossy screen is better bcoz there is not much stuff to reflect on the screen even under direct sunlight.
Yes, so long as the source of light is spread out and not a light directly behind or above you then the glossy screen should not be too reflective.
glossy is better.
Who takes laptops anywhere anyway :D
I was trying to choose which laptop to buy 13, 14 or 15". I fancied the lenovo yoga with a 14" but it has a total glossy screen which I think will be a problem. I'm so confused right now. I feel like sticking with my old laptop. In fact feck it! I'm going to live in a tree....
Matte beats Glossy, ALWAYS.
Kempes SFA fuck off
mrzazzaable You fuck off
not in brightness, vividness of colors and lack of grainy image... but other than these non-important factors, yeah
it’s very helpful thank you!
What makes the screen glossy??any films or something??If so where is it stickered, inside or out??
Matte screen all the way! I am using a Samsung Ativ book. It's less painful for the eyes and a lot more advantage, for me atleast. I even use a matte protector on my iphone. :) (personal opinion)
Thank you~ X3 It's really a good review imo.. =)
Both screens built on the same technology? I mean both of them are IPS or VA or TN?
Does either one of them have any influence on the camera?
Refl8is half the battle. Light source glare is what the war us all about. Sealing lights at home and work is the enemy
After years of using mate I prefer glossy and here's why:
with Glossy you can control your environment and the light and get the superior visual benefits it has over Mate. Since mate is merely an anti glare film that makes the image fuzzy and cloudy you can't remove it and you're stuck with the same thing forever. it looks as if someone came on your screen and tried to wipe it off.
matte best
I like matte the best too, specifically a matte IPS screen with wide viewing angles.
You can't compare any screen with any of the google products even if this is matte, glossy, light-y, etc. (Including iPhone, iPad, or Mac)
If you want to show the difference, please use the same level's products.
Please take this as my suggestion, I am not blaming anything on you.
Thank you very much for this video it really helped me😁😁.
Great, glad it helped, thanks for the feedback!
which is the best laptop screen is matte or glossy
matte screens are obviously best however... this ain't 2012 anymore :( your choice is usually either - the laptop with the specs / form factor you want OR a matte screen... basically we have to live with glossy on laptops now, and it sucks... big time... but... the manufacturers do it for a reason, it looks prettier in store so easier to make a sale.
Hi! Have you ever find a glossy 27"monitor (like Mac)?
which is the best Progamming laptop screen is matte or glossy
can we replace sir the glossy coating because i had a bubble on my laptop :( please reply.
I'm a programmer and I hate glossy as it brings torment to the eyes
Hello,
Can i put glossy screen in the place of matte screen in my laptop ?
Glossy screen was used only on cheap laptops. Oh yeah, for apple fanatics, you can pay 3K for a simple laptop and still get a glossy screen.
We are humans, there will always be sun, lights etc. around us. Glossy can be a real pain so stick with Matte.
look at those 2 displays viewing black and look at the contrast. now think again.
This says nothing about glossy vs matte, these are different displays
What is the technical name for the two types of screen shown above?
