Bookbinding with a Sewing Machine + Paper Slipcase DIY

  • Binding notebooks on the sewing machine. My machine is a Singer Facilita Heavy Duty and I was able to sew up to 25 sheets of normal printer paper (not counting the cover), more than that is too much for the needle.
    Sewing the notebooks with the machine was very practical and fast, the finishing was also cool, it only depends on the sewing ability, and mine is minimal 😅
    I also made a kraft paper slipcase to protect a set of notebooks.

    I have that same machine. It is a beast. One time I sewed through a wooden ruler accidentally.
    You could glue some cardstock to some fabric or fancy rice paper to take the covers up to the next level.

    Try different needles. A universal needle may only go through 25, but I bet a leather or denim needle would go through more without breaking. Great idea, nice tutorial :-)

      @@artzicrafts Yeah the key here is to use a "sharp", not a "universal" or "ball" head, and then perhaps try a medium gauge, working your way thicker if need be. Even though a leather needle is a well-intentioned idea, I'd try to find a workable solution with a standard sharp, before going full-on leather/denim, since the latter make large cuts and could lead to tear outs later on (the tips are more like a diagonal knife blade than a needle point).

    What weight of cover stock and text paper are you using? What type of thread? Do you do anything to thread at the head and tail once you've trimmed those? I would have thought they'd unfurl.

  • @DivineMisterAdVentures

    You've obviously practiced! Hot melt glue for the flaps?

    • @elisenda9
      @elisenda9 Před 5 lety +1

      It's probably more about the needle than about the sewing machine. If the needle is too thin or weak it'll break like it happened here on the first try

    • @ShamoraBarnard
      @ShamoraBarnard Před 5 lety +1

      It seemed like they were basically saying you can use a normal machine but crank it manually instead of with the pedal because you will break the needle

  • @wearetemporary
    @wearetemporary Před 3 lety

    I wonder if for slightly thicker stacks dampening the spine area of the pages would help the needle penetrate the pages more easily.

    • @ragnhildiam8691
      @ragnhildiam8691 Před 5 měsíci

      Ah I see now, you do sew it flipped open but it's done at the outside of the cover and white paper is double folded at the outside. Is this done as perfect measurement to where the middle is? And , it seems that the white paper already has holes in it, did you sew through the middle before?
