Thank you so much Steve! I have a R7900 and that's an upgrade from I don't know, over the years, I've had 3 or 4 routers. But, I am still kinda confused when it comes to networking. I've learned more from you today in this short video than I have from all the instruction papers and videos I've seen to date! So, wish me luck!

Something else to take into consideration within your home, is the construction of the home. I have the Nighthawk X6 as well but, it doesn't reach the entire house. I've had to use 3 different access points to get signal. The X6 is located upstairs, in new construction homes this, in general, wouldn't be an issue. However, my house was built in the 1930s and still has nearly all of its original shiplap walls. Shiplap is horrible for wifi. I plan on hard wiring the entire house and adding 2 more X6 routers setup as access points for full coverage. Great overview of 'fixing' wifi.

I solved my wifi issues by simply moving my router over about 4 ft.
~ The story... I was getting 50 mbs when I was in the living room (where the router was) but upstairs, I was getting 6 mbs, and in the basement I was getting 4 mbs. Even when I was directly above or below where the router was setting.
~ I moved the router upstairs (per your suggestions in this video) and got 50 mbs in every room upstairs... but only got 3 mbs in the living room, and 2 mbs in the basement. Weird.
~ I put the router back in the living room, but this time I sat the router in a spot about 4 ft from where I use to have it in the living room. Now, I'm getting full strength in every single room in the house! WOO HOOO! ~
"What was causing the slow issues?", you ask? Steel support beams. Yep. That's right. Steel. Beams. Those things apparently wreak havoc with wifi signals... and I have TWO of them in my new house. One in the floor between basement and 1st floor, and the other between 1st and 2nd floors (because of a loft area). I didn't not know we had two beams.
~ It ends up that when the router was originally in the living room, I had the router setting directly above one of the steel support beams. When I put the router upstairs, I had the router directly over the other steel beam. When I put the router back in the living room, I put it in a different space, which was 4 ft away from the steel beam. That was all it took to get my wifi speeds going full tilt in every room of the house.

Any metal beam or surface will interfere with your signal. That includes even mirrors. People don't know or forget that mirrors are something more than glass, and they reflect wifi signals as they reflect light.

Upload and download are same no matter what time of day it is because there is no congestion on the system because everyone has their own dedicated fiber feed direct from headend to home. Hi Steve,
We have 6 people with 25 devices connected to the internet now main modem is not the best at all I found away that lessens the device congestion over all.
Now my bedroom is the actual garage where the internet WiFi signal is least strongest and the furtherest from the modem in our upstairs spare room.
Now I connected powerline Ethernet adapter kit to the main modem via Ethernet, then I used my old tp-link adsl2+ modem and disabled dsl setting that allows to use an isp,
From there I configured and in bridge mode and having as a router only and then ran a second Ethernet cable from the powerline adapter in my room to my modem which carries the internet signal
to my room in garage from I connected my desktop pc, my MacBook Air, my Xbox and nas to that using Ethernet cables with problems, then I configured the WiFi on my modem with new Sid’s on both bands 2.4ghz and the 5ghz for my iPad and iPhone with custom passwords creating my own network.
I had found out there was still congestion on the network with our tenant downstairs so I connected a WiFi extender and connected that to the main modem and creating there own network if fixed that issue for while then it’s started up all over again a 3rd time with my cousins gaming pc so I repeated the same process I did in my room minus the powerline adapter, I got another tp-link modem configured it all on bridge mode ran a 15m Ethernet cable from the main modem into the back that tp-link modem and ran Ethernet cables from the desktop and 2 ps4’s in to and configured WiFi network Ssid’s and it was all done.
Only the only running the main modems only supports 2.4ghz band is 3 apple computers, 1 tablet, 3 phones, 1 Apple TV and 2 smart TVs and all this is rarely used mainly 1 laptop, 1 tablet and 3 phones are used between 3 people and stopped all congestion on the home network, only time we have problems is when our isp here is doing upgrades on the network from there end other than that it’s sweet no problems at all and it took me about 5-15 mins to do it all with connections and configurations for each network devices with extenders and modems running off the main modem it was quick and easy.
I don’t need to adjust any settings for channels that’s self maintained, stopped all network congestion’s and every sing internet argument in our house hold!!!

Steve, this is an excellent video. I couldn't have said it any better. I do tech support and get as least 2 calls per week asking for help with this topic, dropped internet connections. I have to explain these steps to users over and over. To your comment, I'd argue that the number of devices in your home is not as important as the number of other routers in your area (neighbors) that interfere with yours, that is the biggest issue, and thus "channel isolation" is the biggest fix. I've added this video to my collection of advice for my users. I've Thumbs up, Subscribed and now Commented. Its a triple-play!

since you have the x6, enable the ‘smart’ feature of the router and it will load balance your 2.4 and your 2 5GHz band. where the slower devices are automatically put on the slower band. the 2 5GHz bands are also load balanced where if there are more than 3 devices on the first and none or 1-2 devices on the 2nd, the router automatically puts the device on the band with the lighter traffic. if you set them to connect to specific bands, you could end up with 5 devices on 1 5ghz band and none on the other and slow down your connection. my 2 cents.

If you are smart, you wire up the static devices in the house with Ethernet cables and leave wifi only for smart phones and netbooks. All TVs, media streaming devices should be plugged in by the ethernet cables. But I understand if are in a temporary situation and don't own the house or plan to stay long.

A couple thoughts, how about turning the wifi ap upside down, then signal will down....or should I say up, or turning the antana ' s to better send signals.
Do you have some recommendations for wifi extenters...as there seem to be a lot of biased adds and reviews on some extenders, and cannot really get good reviews?

KEATH POLYAK WiFi extenders split the available bandwidth. Mesh is far superior.

Steve, can you tell me the difference between 2.4 and 5GHz. What should i use and on what device? i find that i get more mbs on 5ghz than 2.4. If my computer is 6 ghz, can i use 5 ghz from the wifi? Thanks Darren.

When your upload speed ? is 1.48 and your download speed? is 1.30 there's no use trying to speed up your wi fi as we have in rural Greenville Texas. That's what I've found out.

I use Speedtest the same one you use and I live in Louisville Ky I ping everyone customer off of Cincinnati Ohio because of the congestion issues the upload speeds for say 60mps will give me up and over 70mps and download is over 5-6 pings around 49

I have an old AirPort Extreme in a basement and when I go to the 2nd floor, your video just spun for a bit. I also have an airport express on the second floor but I don’t think that is doing anything. I get 30 down and 20 up so I get good service, so I was thinking of getting the powerline to help with slowing of internet. But are they just for hard witeconnects? Thank you.

What about connecting two routers together. I saw some people do this.

Yea you can do that all a router is a gateway connection to the internet you’ll just have multiple IP connections

What if you don't have a router only the Isp modem? There isn't much I can do with it to be honest.
