    These 2 play so well together. Her smiles and skills at the piano, and the way Ste'phane makes the Cello literally sing. He really gets into the soul of the music and literally becomes one with the instrument.

    Not many cellists would play this opening on the G string but Stéphane has always enjoyed soaring up to places where other cellists would fear to tread. When you have such a lovely instrument and the ability to produce such a glorious sound, why not?

      What's the difference with a normal version? Do you hear a real difference? I'm not technically skilled.

    • @igorgetmeabrain
      @igorgetmeabrain Před 8 měsíci +2

      @@DietrichStockman to be honest it's relatively subtle, but it's partly the difference in timbre between different strings and partly in the expressive quality of shifting high on lower strings which really makes the musical line sing.

    • @DietrichStockman
      @DietrichStockman Před 8 měsíci

      @@igorgetmeabrain I just found out how to play it on the guitar, the basic is really simple, it's the same note played three times and then an open note. The most beautiful things are really simple like for example the Rosamund quartet of Schubert.

    Amazing rendition by 'cellist and accompanimentist. I know this piece a cassette my nan had (in the 80s) of Julian Lloyd Webber's The Romantic Cello and loved the piece the first time I heard it.

    I have only just found this version.
    Now, l am not a musicologist and my hearing is iffy, but l know what l like.
    This performance is ok but:
    The very attractive pianist is supposed to be the accompanist, it is not a duet.
    My ears suggest the piano is very slightly out of tune.
    Stéphane is a fine cellist with many years ahead of him.
    The best version of this piece l have heard is played by Steven Isserlis. He understands that this piece is very religious and l can sense this in his playing.
    The Gold Standard would have been if the late, great, Jacqueline Du Pré had recorded the sonata. Unfortunately, l have not found a recording by her, probably because in the 80s Rachmaninoff was not yet considered mainstream.

    The cellist has some really phenomenal musicality and incredible phrasing but some intonation problems and vibrato which seems . . . "nervous" and is simply the wrong style of vibrato for this Andanté. It needs to be slower and wider but . . . Overall well played and beautiful.
