The Boss PS6 Harmonist was released in 2010, so it probably wasn't used in the recording of these songs in the demo. The songs are just examples of what you an do with the 4 different modes of this pedal: pitch shifter, harmony, detune and super bend. Some settings have 1 voice, others 2 voices besides your dry tone.
Pitch shifter (polyphonic): shifts your signal up or down up to 2 octaves, but it doesn't do all the intervals, just some of the steps in between.
Harmony (monophonic): also shifts your signal to a note in the scale you set this pedal in, ranging between an octave up and an octave down.
Detune (polyphonic): also shifts the pitch, but by a small percentage, up to 20 cents of a semitone, to create a chorus-like effect.
Super Bend (mono/polyphonic): create dive bombs and other whammy sounds up to 4 octaves above or 3 octaves below your original note. This is the only mode where the footswitch is momentary, so it's only shifting your pitch when you press it.
Chapters:

7:02 Harmony octave up (The Beatles - Within You Without You)
I've been searching for this sound for years and just figured it out. Thanks for confirming my theory.
You're welcome. What was the sound you looked for?
Best sounding harmonizer is the digitech 33b Super Harmony!!!
It has the best 3 part harmonies you’ll ever find!!!!
It is a tone sucker in bypass, so it needs to be used on an effects switcher etc, so it’s taken out of the signal chain when in bypass.
Great video! The PS-6 is a really underrated pedal, love mine and how small and easy to take to the road it is
Underrated indeed. I wonder if it's gonna get a successor sometime or if it's gonna be integrated into a multi modulation effect like one of the MD pedals.
I have found mine a bit tough to dial in just right. It almost is too versatile. I only ever wanted it to do a few small specific harmonies and ended using it for a whammy bar most times.
@@thebigv57 this is usually how I use it as well bro, knowing how to dial in what’s useful for you in the context or song you’re playing is the main thing with this pedal I would say. I’ve been playing with my band in some studios/lives now during the quarantine, and the Whammy effect for octave up and a low octave in harmony mode are the two things I go for with it for now. I like having more options if I want too, and all of them shrunken in this small Boss format
Digitech 33b Super Harmony is way, WAY better!!!!!
It’s a tone sucker in bypass mode, but that’s easily worked around with an effects loop switcher, etc.
Apparently you can get good 90s
Van Halen
Tones from one too . Awesome video.
Dude this was great! Had no idea my PS6 could do this stuff, very cool!
Excellent samples. Thanks very much!
Great demo, learned a lot from it. Love the Beatles sound with the slide especially. (I've had a PS-6 for years and only ever used it for one Thin Lizzy song in the set list.)
Thanks! What Thin Lizzy song? The Boys Are Back In Town? The harmonizer would be great for that one
@@DIYguitarGuy Spot on, that's the one!
@@Grunfeld Nice! Now I gotta learn how to play that song as well
Great demo of this pedal. It is a great pedal
I did not know this pedal. Nor the sitar trick......
Thanks.....
Thank you! I am waiting for my Boss PS6.
The original BOSS PS-6 promotion video sucks hard. This should be the official promotion video. You should add a sponsored Amazon link for the pedal because you made me buy it brother! Thanks for the review.
Thanks! Yeah I'm also planning to make a 'how to make the PS6 sound good'-video since this pedal has some quirks that you need to be aware of. Once you're used to those, this pedal sounds awesome.
@@DIYguitarGuy Woah can't wait! Subscribed
Hi! The "How to make the Boss PS6 sound good" is available on my channel right now. Feel free to check it out!
@@DIYguitarGuy Oh hell yea! Thank you very much
beatles
I use a Boss Ps-3 it never leaves my board. Tracks terrible, glitchy AF and rarely get the same sound twice. I love it This kinda sounds meh. Not much of an upgrade.
Oh man. 70’s guitar and Boston too! I bet the Allman Bros. are in there too……..and then 90’s EVH………SOLD!!!!!!!!
for the Tom Morello stuff did you not use an expression pedal or was that genuinely the ps-6 alone? It's outstanding either way. I think the actual song varies the sweep's rise and fall moreso but for the footprint size on your board who cares and noone would notice at a show I reckon. Best demo I've seen on this pedal. thanks
Thanks! The RATM solo is done without an expression pedal. The PS6's footswitch becomes momentary when it's in Super Bend mode (the Whammy stuff), so your pitch will only shift when you press down. You can set the rise and fall time independently. For more control you could hook up an expression pedal but like you said: that would mean a bigger footprint. There aren't many good videos about the pedal, most people tend to place it pre-gain and especially the Harmony mode sounds awful. Check out Cyberattack's How To Be Advanced video. I'm also planning to upload another video about it next week. Stay tuned!
@@DIYguitarGuy definitely got mine based on cyberattacks video and loving the pitch shift feature after distortion sounds awesome. Played Reapers by Muse and sounds just alike
@@MrDream-zm1pw Reapers is a killer song and great for the PS6 indeed!
Could this be used for the GOJIRA- Stranded for those high pitch notes in the beginning riff?
Value stomp box. Ignore the naysayers.
Who knows how to put this sound of doble guitar or two guitars in new Katana mk2 100 ??? In Boss Tone studio there is a Harmonist in effects.
Does anyone know if the PS-6 is analog dry through and can the original and effected sounds be set to go to different outputs?
I'm not sure about the analog dry through, but it's buffered for sure. I think it it is analog because if you use the S-Bend mode really slowly, you can hear when the original sound fades out and the digitally pitched sounds kicks in. Not noticeable when you use it at normal speed though. Most of the effects use output A as a dry out and B for the pitched sounds, if there's a cable connected to output B. Some of the effects use a slightly different output mapping, you can look it up in the manual. What do you wanna use it for?
@@DIYguitarGuy hey thanks for replying! Might use it for harmonised leads mostly and for the occasional RATM song
@@lockdan The PS6 works great for those sounds! The trick to harmonising is to either place it after dirt (in the effects loop) or send a dry signal to 1 (dirty) amp and a 100% wet signal to another. The RATM Whammy noises sound slightly better before dirt, but it's not essential.
That sounds pretty cool man. I wonder if The Eagles use the same pedal on one of these nights.
This pedal didn't exist back then, it was all real guitars
would be great for one generic multi-foot switch and multi up-dn pedal for each effect on this. Live performance don't need hand control . Can i use octave and harmonist at the same time w/ control ?
Exactly my thoughts. This thing should be remade with multiple footswitches and/or midi control for presets, like in the Boss 500-style enclosure (with stereo ins and outs, also for pre/post switching). Switching from a dialled in harmony sound to your favourite whammy-style setup is way too hard on the PS6, especially in a live situation.
What effect do you use when you speak? It distorts some voices from your alphabet. Great review! Tks
Thanks! It's called a Dutch accent ;) jk, I've used the stock De-esser and Dynamics (Compressor and Limiter) in Premiere Pro. What sounds seem to be distorted?
@@DIYguitarGuy ur voice is nasal and the "r" sounds interesting. Does this pedal allows me : I know a song in the key of A. But its too high for the singer. So I set up this pedal and even I still play in A on my guitar but the audible sound is in G ? Thank you
@@DIYguitarGuy Oh, and there is the TC Quintessence out there with the momentary switch that lets me do expression pedal kinda thing. The same price. I am hesitating among them. I m not interested much in the harmony, only whammy down effect and key changing if a singer needs a different key from that I can play a song.
@@ymelfilm I wouldn't recommend the PS6 for key changes, it lags too much. I don't know if the TCE Quintessence does the Whammy stuff or key changes, but you can try the TCE Brainwaves. I also have the Digitech Whammy DT which does both very, very well.
@@DIYguitarGuy thank you. Very useful info! Have a nice day or night:)
Did you recommend use it on the front of the amp or on fx loop?
Mainly in the effects loop, although the S-Bend feature could sound great in front of the amp.
amazing video but boss ps6 never more to me !!!
do you think whammy or boss?
Sound wise? Whammy for sure. The newer ones (Whammy 4, 5 and DT) have such a good polyphonic pitch shifting sound. Older ones (and the Classic mode on the Whammy 5) have some nice glitchy, synth-like texture. But the PS-6 definitely has its benefits: smaller footprint, adjusting wet-dry ratio and the Harmony mode are really great.
missing Muting on the first riff, I assume to avoid copyright?
What do you mean? Did CZcams mute the Black Keys riff? I didn't know, I only received a notification about the Beatles tune
@@DIYguitarGuy palm
@@BarnacleButtock I didn't palm mute the first riff because it's not present in the original recording
The 1990s example is a painful reminder of how terrible the '90s were musically. That octave jump effect is unutterably lame. No wonder guitar disappeared from radio.
NEXT TIME TUNE YOUR GUITAR FIRST
THANKS FOR THE TIP!!!1!1!!
@@DIYguitarGuyHe doesn't need to tune his guitar. He's got pedals and plugins to fix that.
3:36 Do you know what 1-octave up means?? (Hint: It doesn't mean 1-octave down). Another terrible video...
Soloing is not your thing man... "More than a feeling" and "fade to black" were fucking embarassing. Try to do more (precise) Bendings, vibrato and slides instead of going directly to the notes.
Thanks for the tip! Soloing is not my thing. Besides that, bends and vibrato don't work that well with the PS6. When you bend it and the pedal decides to change the interval of the generated note, that's even worse than my solos.
@@DIYguitarGuy yeah, I know...I have a boss Hr2 being used only for detune nowadays. Tracking sucks with these harmonizers.
Ok mom
@@tokenofdevotion call me "teacher" instead and thank me later.
He was demonstrating the features of an effects pedal, not his guitar playing abilities. Pipe down you little mallet head🙂 Go back to playing Coldplay covers
