You're half right but the prizes on UK game shows were laughable compared their American equivalents at the time. ITV was better than the BBC. The BBC was particularly notorious for small prizes - still is... Look at Pointless, you'd be lucky to win five grand on there.

Add a zero on the end £10,000, and now you're talking.

Best quiz show of all time. Jim is a legend. The show was unprofessional, many of the prizes were awful .... but its that what made it the best show lol. Just the simple things, like the guys were due £180 and Jim pulls out a wad of £200 and says "I'll take £20 off that, you take the rest. That's £90 a piece you know!"
Great shows genuine results. Loved it. Feel good factor always there. Even when they may loose. Great families on these shows. Much better than now days. Thank you for showing us.

Loved how Jim never used to let them celebrate, he was always more concerned with wrestling them into position for the camera and never forgot to drop in what TV region they were from!
That’s when 155 pounds was still 155 pounds! Thats probably the most genuine heartfelt affectionate hug I’ve ever seen two people exchange on TV! And that would’ve really been a prize worth having in the 1980’s! I wouldn’t mind winning that myself only my kitchen at home isn’t big enough to accommodate all those appliances.

We have 96 Open Spaces within a 7 mile radius and all I had to do was move 10 miles away from off The Old Kent Road, where my heart still is. I used to think they always had all the household goods prize sitting backstage for the winners, and the gold plated speedboat got rolled out for the losing “let’s see what you could have won...” moment.
They usually did. Then pushed out the prize they wanted to get rid of if the contestents won. I remember a quiz programme review thing where someone who worked on the programme saying they had an excellent deal ti get the cars and the boats were more expencive. Usually had both backstage and more often than not pushed out the car if it was a win and the boat if they lost

Watching a load of reboots that failed (Family fortunes, Catchphrase, Blockbusters) shows how the host matters more than the format of the game does. No one that came to fame after 2000 has any idea about hosting a gameshow - even those that have been doing so for many years. Ben Shephard, Richard Osmon et al... None come close to the old-fashioned variety entertainers like Bob Monkhouse, Bruce Forsythe and Michael Barrymore.
I, too loved Bullseye. Bully's Bellow was funny. I remember Bully walking across the screen, with a dictionary, and pointing to the letters. Jim Bowen used to rub the contestants's noses in it, when he said, "It's probably the cruellest saying on Television. Let's have a look at what you would have won".
Just watching this episode on Challenge TV tonight. What a great show it was, and I’m so sad we lost Tony Green recently. Bullseye brings back so many happy childhood memories, and I sincerely miss it!

The highlight of my childhood Sunday before mother added another gallon of lacquer and we all headed to the working mans club for bingo. If we were flush, a pot of prawns when the seafood man came in with his wicker basket of delights
I was that seafood man .... when you can walk into a pub or club with a wicker basket full of manky crabsticks and a jacket with " Here comes Supercockle" on the back you have no fear 😉

I love it when Jim repeadly pointed at the camera and made them wave!!! Nearly every episode.
I used to think they always had all the household goods prize sitting backstage for the winners, and the gold plated speedboat got rolled out for the losing “let’s see what you could have won...” moment.
Love it. So you live in Birmingham, you've won the speedboat!
They usually did. Then pushed out the prize they wanted to get rid of if the contestents won.
I remember a quiz programme review thing where someone who worked on the programme saying they had an excellent deal ti get the cars and the boats were more expencive. Usually had both backstage and more often than not pushed out the car if it was a win and the boat if they lost
@@madabbafan I remember watching it in the late 80s and the “Here’s what you would have won” was a weekend at some sort of holiday camp akin Centre Parcs. They looked so pissed off they didn’t win and Jim was like “Wouldn’t that have been marvellous!?, but you’ve still got your Bully darts and tankard!”🤣🤣🤣
Usually the other way round. I heard Jim say the show had a deal with the speedboat seller, so they gave that away most.

And the contestants were decent down to earth people ,not attention seeking exhibitionists.
We never missed bully, and i actually remember this - fantastic

These were fantastic days to grow up in, everything was soooo much simpler than this crazy world we have! look how happy the lady was with the prizes! Now it would have to be a Ferrari and a fortnight in Dubai!

Ah. Sunday afternoons, everyone in England tuned in to Bullesye. Golden memories - all the family, cups of tea, cat purring on lap. Jim Bowen was just brilliant...40 years later his catchphrases are STILL used: Super, Smashing, Great, Listen ta Tone-ah' , Keep out of the black and in the red...nothing in this game for 2 in a bed, Come and See What Ya Would've Won, Ya Cant beat a bit of Bully, your charity money....thats saaaaaafe, all you get is ya BFH...ya bus fair home

Sue & Pim. There's an 80s sitcom there in the making. Located in their newly fitted out kitchen, they could get a good 10 series out of that I think.
Top telly you can never recreate this program, they’ve tried but it never captured the magic of the original great,smashing,super Jim you were a ledgend god bless my friend.
Watching a load of reboots that failed (Family fortunes, Catchphrase, Blockbusters) shows how the host matters more than the format of the game does. No one that came to fame after 2000 has any idea about hosting a gameshow - even those that have been doing so for many years. Ben Shephard, Richard Osmon et al... None come close to the old-fashioned variety entertainers like Bob Monkhouse, Bruce Forsythe and Michael Barrymore.
Can't beat a bit of bully used to love that programme when I was a kid gota love the 80s 😂

I, too loved Bullseye. Bully's Bellow was funny. I remember Bully walking across the screen, with a dictionary, and pointing to the letters. Jim Bowen used to rub the contestants's noses in it, when he said, "It's probably the cruellest saying on Television. Let's have a look at what you would have won".
Would have loved it if in one episode the non darts player had taken Tony's advice that they had all the time in the world.
Those electrical items are probably still working today

Just watching this episode on Challenge TV tonight. What a great show it was, and I’m so sad we lost Tony Green recently. Bullseye brings back so many happy childhood memories, and I sincerely miss it!

Those were the days, church on a Sunday morning then down the pub for a few jars, then back home for one of mums roast dinners. Sleep it off and wake up in time for a bit of Bully...... See if someone would win his special prize..... And why was it ALWAYS a speedboat??!!! (Except for the times it was a miniMetro)
